DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones, Gentleman Jack) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones) are back to investigate a murder in the Arctic.

Just about every major world power has its eye on Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago. Melting ice caps open up the possibility for resource extraction and trade routes, and Russia, China and the UK are all interested.

A diplomatic quagmire is created by the murder of a member of the British special forces, meaning Amy and Kirsten have to tread more carefully than ever before.

Dominic Mafham (The Clinic) will reprise his role as MI5 official Ian Downing.

Joining him this series will be Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom) as Svalbard police chief Henrick Becken and Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh) as microbiologist Shen Jia.

Tornike Gogrichiani (Drops of God) will round out the cast as a Russian Colonel and Eric Godon (In Bruges) as Mayor Korotayev.

Vigil returns on Sunday 30 August.

Security forces are always the baddies. It's what they do. Each as cynical as the others; the Brits, the Americans, the Chinese, as they rather tub-thumpingly pointed out. Poor old Fyodor was quietly forgotten about, I guess he walked the plank. They really turned it up to 11 tonight, but of course it was terrible.

I saw the last 2 episodes on Sunday but I’ve already forgotten who, why and when! I am looking forward to the new Michelle Keegan one starting on Sunday.

ETA - I have questions too. How come, at the end of Ep 5, they’d been forced off the road and very bad men with guns (presumably sent by Sir Ian) were closing in on them? At the start of Ep 6 Silva and Jia had miraculously escaped said men, which seemed….unlikely, to put it mildly.

As if they could escape.
How did they escape ?
Where did they sleep/ go to the loo ? What did they live on ?
So Sir Ian was the baddie ?
Why ?
Was he in league with the Minister ?
Why did his assistant go against him in the end ?
Why did the driver with Shen Jua in the car at the end not drive off as ordered by Sir Ian but listened to Amy ?
Why was Hodge killed in the first place ?
Where did the Russian detective go ?
Why was the American involved ?
Was Shen Jia’s boyfriend’s boss a baddie ?
Going off with granny wouldn’t keep the children safe. 🙄

I think the men with guns closing in on the car at the end of Ep 5 weren't baddies as we thought, but British Special Forces. So they rescued Silva and Jia. As for the rest of it, I haven't a clue.

Even in something as simplistic as this (pretty awful) show, the world isn't quite divided into 'goodies' and 'baddies'. That simplistic, bone-headed thinking is half of what's wrong with the world, as read on the pages of MN every day.
