DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones, Gentleman Jack) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones) are back to investigate a murder in the Arctic.

Just about every major world power has its eye on Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago. Melting ice caps open up the possibility for resource extraction and trade routes, and Russia, China and the UK are all interested.

A diplomatic quagmire is created by the murder of a member of the British special forces, meaning Amy and Kirsten have to tread more carefully than ever before.

Dominic Mafham (The Clinic) will reprise his role as MI5 official Ian Downing.

Joining him this series will be Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom) as Svalbard police chief Henrick Becken and Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh) as microbiologist Shen Jia.

Tornike Gogrichiani (Drops of God) will round out the cast as a Russian Colonel and Eric Godon (In Bruges) as Mayor Korotayev.

Vigil returns on Sunday 30 August.

AFAIK that's all pretty factual about the political situation on Svalbard.

moto748e · 31/08/2026 22:02

Also, for an apparent superboss, Amy doesn't seem that smart. Kirsten had to talk some sense into her on the phone.

Haven't seen this before so jumped on here to see if anybody thought it was as a rubbish as I did.

Why they make silly mistakes when they've got such a big budget I don't understand. For example she's been blown up and has three little red dots on her face which seem to be in different positions depending on which scene she's in....

Or the Norwegian security guard man says could they be our footprints? when he told them to take their boots off when they entered the facility and they're all wearing socks and then some sort of overshoe cover thing....

Oh it was so unbelievable I fell asleep and missed most of the second episode.

I suspect the Norwegian guy is Up To Something.

i switched to Trigger Point which has as many holes in the plot but is much more entertaining. Honestly though why are these dramas always the same.

I hadn't been following either series, but opted for Vigil rather than TP. Not over-impressed so far.

Tho tech baby isn’t anything to do with poppy - the spiel says half sibling but it’s not as neither woman is her mum tho guessing they may have adopted her

I can’t rem how they got her to live with them and not the gp’s who are her blood relatives and wanted her

IIRC the grandparents saw Poppy with Amy and thought that actually that was the best place for her.

I’m enjoying s3 so far 🙂

ETA I expect we will find out next episode why Paulina (sp?) left the room

Husband is a submariner. We are only watching it to wind him up! 😬😂

I mean I guess that's why they put that in there but so heavy-handed don't you think I mean does he think they're completely stupid... although to be fair on current showing yes they are.

Let me trick them by suggesting they made the footprints even though they are wearing their socks they won't notice.... evil cackle

Piggywaspushed · 02/09/2026 06:43

He keeps pulling faces too and looking suspect. Maybe he is just 'acting' like a Norwegian who doesn't usually have to deal with crime....

Banjas · 02/09/2026 07:52

One really has to suspend disbelief- the Rose Leslie character, Kirsten and the Russian policeman Fyodor meeting up “secretly” in a library style room poring over a computer and images on it in the Russian “enclave” and there’s no CCTV - I mean really 🙄, no one spots them !!!
Likewise in the British Scientific building along the corridors there’s no CCTV.
Yeah right 🙄 !!!
I think the gift the Chinese scientist made and gave the Professor is significant in some way, the one her Chinese colleague questioned her about.

I had that thought too @Banjas

DH is inexplicably attached to this series and I sit trying to restrain my cries of 'hokum!' every time the next ridiculous plot twist happens. It does seem to be in the presence of DCI Amy Silva and everyone close to her that these unfortunate events proliferate - a fatal bomb blast, a kidnapping, a holding at gunpoint…

You also have to laugh that they sent Kirsten out because they needed an ‘ordinary, low-key' copper, and within an episode they're on the brink of an international incident. What larks!

IberianLynx · 04/09/2026 14:30

I really liked the first series of this, on the submarine. The second series was ok but it was on a downward trajectory. Not liking this series at all, I’ve only watched the first episode and haven’t decided whether or not to watch the rest. Definitely won’t binge it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/09/2026 18:07

It’s def not capturing me the way trigger point has or even s1

I'm in this for the emotional lesbian angst and the views of Svalbard - so far it's failed to deliver on both counts!

I don't get why you would film in a place like that and not have it in as many shots as possible!

I called the Director of the institute as the baddie too... I'm shit at following the plot intricacies, but even I could see that one coming!

Vigil's USP is that it has 2 female leads who are also in a relationship... I think it's beginning to show that it's written by a man!

moto748e · 06/09/2026 22:22

Yeah, the 'personal' scenes with Amy and Kirsten aren't too convincing, are they?
Why would the CCP want a microbiologist? Yeah, that's a real head-scratcher, isn't it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/09/2026 23:07

Watched. Kinda bored by it which is a shame as I like SJ as an actress

Was hoping for great things from this but very disappointed. Maybe not their fault but the plot was too twisty for me to follow . Was the Chinese woman a double agent ? Why would the Russians care if she defected ? And why was that Brit guy killed in her room with the door locked from inside - did they throw him out the window .
So gave up and watched Friends instead 😁

moto748e · 06/09/2026 23:29

I was assuming Jia killed Hodge. is that wrong? But yeah, it's daft.

Tbh with the way the writing is going I would not be shocked if they took the polar bear in for questioning and then had the two detectives look worried they got the wrong one and then had a break through when it coughed up a body part.

Then some bizzare story how it was a covert russian trained assassin as the Chinese scientist was rude about the Chinese leader as she brought home winny the pooh kids toy once, which is about as plausible as these scripts lol
