DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones, Gentleman Jack) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones) are back to investigate a murder in the Arctic.

Just about every major world power has its eye on Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago. Melting ice caps open up the possibility for resource extraction and trade routes, and Russia, China and the UK are all interested.

A diplomatic quagmire is created by the murder of a member of the British special forces, meaning Amy and Kirsten have to tread more carefully than ever before.

Dominic Mafham (The Clinic) will reprise his role as MI5 official Ian Downing.

Joining him this series will be Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom) as Svalbard police chief Henrick Becken and Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh) as microbiologist Shen Jia.

Tornike Gogrichiani (Drops of God) will round out the cast as a Russian Colonel and Eric Godon (In Bruges) as Mayor Korotayev.

Vigil returns on Sunday 30 August.

I was assuming Jia killed Hodge. is that wrong? But yeah, it's daft.

I don’t think she did

but then don’t know who did

Series 1 was good, series 2 less so…ditching this now as struggled through 1st ep and part of the 2nd but just don’t care about anyone and it’s all a bit pantomime baddies. Trigger Point is proving less annoying this series (so far).

Banjas · 07/09/2026 13:52

I’m not bored by it but it is quite a convoluted story.
i think a lot of writers for this kind of series have an idea / plan in their heads which is clear to them as they know the finale and its twists and turns but for the viewer they are often left scratching their heads which are melted from suspending disbelief.
Basically some scriptwriters are too clever by half and up their own …….

E4 tonight

I called the rogue Norwegian on the thread on 1st September! Preens.

It irrationally annoys me that several characters called Amy DCI Silver (including Rose Leslie doing her Scottish accent so it's v audible) when she is Silva.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/09/2026 21:35

Well done @Piggywaspushed

So Jia's sample is what? Some green miracle product?

Johnogroats · 07/09/2026 22:34

Every scene is unrealistic. The best bit is the commentary from cynical son and even more cynical DH.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/09/2026 22:35

Haven’t a clue what the sample is and why so important

i did think silly for her to leave key in quad

Solo many plot holes... but will probably still watch to the end.

Lentilcakes · 08/09/2026 08:36

I’m usually crap at spotting the baddie but it was getting too obvious it being the Director.
Def not as in to this - DH likes it though 🤷‍♀️
The first series was much better - the claustrophobia on the sub was tangible.

turbomountain · 08/09/2026 09:49

The only thing going for this is the scenery for me.

moto748e · 08/09/2026 10:38

And again last night, frantic action sequences, broken up by clunky relationship angst scenes.

I agree. Not necessary.

Awful writing and plot action. I’m oot!

Bogstandardname · 08/09/2026 19:13

I will stick with it now but finding it confusing and frankly, a bit boring. Husband went to bed halfway through second episode.

lordbaddingham · 08/09/2026 19:47

I really don't understand much of what's going on. I'm assuming the characters would be wondering why random British police officers keep turning up every time someone is murdered. And I can't understand why a couple would still be allowed to work together so closely anyway, surely one of them would be transferred. And Kirsten's poor mum is looking after the baby all this time 😂 I do love Rose Leslie though.

Tootingbec · 10/09/2026 23:03

I am trying but gawd this is shit. I was quite hooked on Series 1 but couldn’t get beyond episode 1 on series 2.

But thought give this a whirl. I 💯 understand the need to suspend some beliefs to enjoy this kind of thing but this is ludicrous. Major diplomatic incident going on under dangerous circumstances and they send in a lone female DI. Meanwhile her DCI girlfriend/wife who is also her boss (?! - surely not permitted in most orgs let alone the police) is somehow singularly trying to locate a kidnapped government Minister, while dodging bombs, loons with guns etc etc I mean, come on!

And now I am just bored and confused about what is going on. Although the Russian police officer is quite attractive!

The only upside is they are at least giving the teenage daughter character very limited screentime- unlike most of these dramas which insist on building some pointless plot point about teenager being in a strop because their M15 operative mother can’t make parents evening

The Russian guy is the best thing in it. Not that he's had much to do, I wondered if he was going to try it on with Kirsten at one point. None of them seem to have had any characterisation written in, so you don't care what happens to them at all.

moto748e · 11/09/2026 00:13

I can’t disagree; it's not good at all, but we keep watching! Agree the Russian guy is the best thing in it, but maybe that 's because, as well as being good-looking, his character seems to have some purpose, unlike the less credible others.

Unexpectedlhereagain · 11/09/2026 10:07

I’m still watching but it hasn’t gripped me, like TP did. I also much prefer VM to SJ.
