Is anyone else watching?

I can’t say a lot because it’s very outing but I grew up with this family. So surreal seeing it all like this. They’re some of my earliest memories.

The psychologist seemed to relish the attention and the opportunity to display her superiority complex on TV. It was incredibly revealing that she chose to speak poorly of absent individuals and discuss conditions she isn't legally qualified to diagnose. Furthermore, she confidently discussed concepts that didn't make any logical sense, such as the unscientific claim that trauma is physically "stored" inside the body, which is pure quackery. I have no affiliation with anyone on the program, but I was absolutely astounded by her behavior.

I watched the documentary based on your post and didn’t see any evidence of what you’ve suggested at all.

It's quite clear mum has significant MH issues. I'm seriously wondering about C4's ethics this week after the adhd programme and now this obviously very unwell woman being put on tv.

She was deemed to face trial and is being given anonymity.

Was John Smythe suffering from mental illness when he beat severely beat over 100 youths.
Should a documentary not have been made about him.

My sympathy is not with the perps.

I don't feel any sympathy for her either but that's not to say its ethically right to platform such people.

I don't believe she had any traumatic incident as a teenager, I don't believe she is mentally unwell either. She is an attention seeking liar and grifter. She even lied about university and having IVF.

I am guessing there might have been payment? Considering she was happy to reap all the rewards from having an 'ill' child then I am sure she would be willing to take on any opportunity for attention and money.

Probably. I bet she loved every minute :/

My daughter was on a feeding tube for c. 16months as an infant. I think what's missing fron the documentary is any interrogation of the medical team. My experience is that doctors and speech therapists were quite gungho about medications and interventions. A lot of pressure was put on us to blane symptoms on reflux and take reflux medication and to pile on other medications. I resisted these because the reaspning never added up to me and ultimately genetic testing showed other reasons for symptoms, and proved that these medicines wouldn't have been beneficial.

Our speech team were constantly wanting to assess safe swallow and pushing a g tube and there was no support at all for weaning off the ng tube, we had to do it totally unsupported. And our neurologists in Great Ormond St have always been very very encouraging of very strong medications to help manage what we see as quite minor symptoms (mostly anti seizure medicine to manage very mild dystonia)

I think of course the mum was in the wrong and lied and exagerated and there are no excuses for how far it went. But i wonder how many medical professionals were there enabling and encouraging further treatments. In my experience some specialists and doctors essentially aee it as their job to dole out treatments, especially to children already diagnosed as sick for whatever reason. I think there is often nowhere near enough scrutiny by medical professionals about root causes and what might actually cure or fix underlying issues.

Have you seen the film "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You" - which is about (very abridged description) a mother struggling with a daughter who has a feeding tube, & the mother can't get the drs to agree to remove it? It's an interesting watch.

Totally agree the 'traumatic incident' is just another fabrication. Only she was put on the spot when asked about it for the interview & didn't have the story ready for broadcast. That's why we didn't hear about it, not because sharing it would make her fall apart, as she claimed.

Hiding her face etc., a voice actor - everyone knows who she was but I’m assuming she’s started a new life

Watching the last episode, as far as I can see the daughter is still suffering as a result of her mothers actions. Lisa is completely deluded when she is saying she doesn't have fii , just because she didn't inject salt or smother her child. I really hope Laura can move on from this. Matthew obviously got lots of help and rightly so but it seems Laura was deemed as not needing the help he got and that's so wrong. I don't believe Lisa suffered trauma either she's just an attention seeker

Fascinating that someone has married after all this was made public, presumably he believes that it’s all a big misunderstanding and that she was a great mum? I wonder what his family think and if they know who she is?

She'll have spun a story and sucked him in then he'll just go along with it for the easy life like husband no 1. She's the victim and everyone is out to get her.

I've not watched the program but have read the thread

My mother is similar-always at the doctors with some made up illness (some are genuine but milked to the max)

She loves a stay in hospital and having an operation is her dream

My brother has asthma and when we where growing up,it was 'very severe asthma!' and he could 'die at any time!'

He was always being dragged to the doctors 'to save his life!' and 'he cant do x/y/z as it could kill him!'

If one of us hurt ourselves,no matter how minor,we'd be dragged to a&e so she could be fawned over by the doctors (I was once in hospital with then baby dd and she hated the fact she wasn't the one in there with her)

She had people around her who put the brakes on her behaviour or she would have gone on to do this (it's very hard to explain)

I've seen her green with envy over people who have genuinely ill children (we knew a child who was very ill,on feeding tubes and oxygen,my mother was very snide when talking about this child and his poor mother-you could tell she would have loved having a child just like this poor lad-I'm convinced she would have loved the sympathy and attention)

Thank god she had people around her to pull her back when she started to go too far

Those poor dc-its very hard to move on from these types of people (I'm nc)

Her kids were on there, you could see her eyes up, anyone can look up the press and court case, she's far from anonymous.

Finished watching this last night. What a piece of work. I believe she did have FDIA but in my opinion she has it combined with some other personality disorder. She comes across as genuinely believing she's done nothing wrong, she manipulates and gaslights people. I thought it was interesting that at the end when they asked her what she'd do if her kids decided to resume contact her response was as if she'd be doing them a favour letting them back in "of course I'd talk to them they're my kids" as if the kids are the ones at fault for the breakdown in the relationship. I also don't believe she's any childhood trauma. I think her daughter is more effected by her because of going to live with her as a teen which sounds like a completely toxic environment. I do feel Matthew may have compartmentalised it a bit and has decided not to go there so I hope it doesn't cause him problems later on because I'm not convinced he's fully processed it. I am a little bemused by the Dad but given the insight from op I suspect he was a victim of her manipulation too and he probably holds a lot of guilt too.
She has no interest in seeking any type of therapeutic support so that again suggests she sees nothing wrong with her behaviour

CarpeVitam · Yesterday 13:05

That was a tough watch….those poor kids!

imperialqueen · Yesterday 17:20

I don't believe the childhood trauma happened either. Was there an issue with her daughter when she was a newborn? Or her first pregnancy? Then the son was born prematurely. I am a bit suspicious that she did something to cause both of those situations with her children when they were new borns/premature. She had the daughter as having health issues until she got a premature baby to replace the daughters made up health issues.. Maybe that wouldn't be physcially possible to bring on early labour but i think she would have taken those chances with the health/life of her children.

Strawberrydelight78 · Yesterday 17:24

I’m watching episode 2 now. She was asked about the cruise and said oh yes we took him off the oxygen and feed and his walker he was running around. Then she said he didn’t really need it he was just being lazy.😳😳😳

I'm not an expert on fii, but there seems to be a reoccurring theme in the cases I've heard of where there is premature birth. There's a podcast called nobody should believe me and while I think the host is biased as her own sister has fii its a very informative listen

Doriangraysattic · Yesterday 18:10

I've finally watched it and I saw so many similarities with my own mother. My situation was no where near as bad but my mother absolutely love the attention when I was in hospital- she was 'so brave' a single mother with this poorly child....
She also had plenty of mental health problems and later in life whenever I tried to challenge her about what she did I'd get tears and 'I did my bests' and all of this.
It's frightening how many situations like this there are. How could a mother put their child through pain for no reason? I would take a scratched knee away from mine if I could.

purpleme12 · Yesterday 22:18

So I'm 18 minutes into episode 2 and it's talking about him have just had an operation and the doctor said he can't go on the planned holiday.

Well I'm intrigued as to what the operation was then?
(I'm guessing that wasn't the only operation either from the sounds of it). It doesn't say what it was for.
I don't get that.

purpleme12 · Yesterday 22:26

It says social services application to keep his sister with him in foster care was denied. Who denied it?
And why?
