The story follows two next-door neighbors in Manchester over the course of an escalating neighborhood dispute:
• Leo (Alan Cumming): A gay man who runs a bar on the famous Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village.
• Clive (David Morrissey): An electrician with two teenage sons who harbors underlying prejudices.

The situation spirals out of control when Leo locks himself out of his house and has to ask his neighbor for a spare key.

This single event triggers a collision of worlds, unearthing mistrust and bigotry, which is further complicated when Leo strikes up a friendship with one of Clive's sons—who happens to be secretly gay.

The five-part drama will follow Leo and Clive who live next door to each other in Manchester. Leo runs a bar on Canal Street, while Clive is an electrician, with two teenage sons. But just as life should be settling down, the world around them is growing more tense.

According to the official synopsis, "Words become weapons, opinions become radicalised, and gradually, two neighbours become deadly enemies in a tense, suburban thriller which challenges everything we consider to be safe."

I didn't realise you're meant to watch one episode of Cucumber and then one of Banana , discovered that googling last night.

That scene is truly TV at its absolute best.

I'd say so. It's finished airing. We can't avoid not talking about it forever. People should avoid the thread until they've finished watching.

Ok, well I thought it was brilliant. There was a fantastic script and wonderful acting, especially Cumming and Morrisey. What a dark ending though, OMG.

I’ve just finished this and my god, I haven’t felt that anxious during a finale for years. We knew it was coming from the flash forward but I kept thinking something has to happen to stop this.

Thoughts are that Clive definitely showed some signs of being confused with his own sexuality. Lying about cheating, the bleak sex life and general contempt for his wife, protecting the drag queen. He hates gays but is conflicted because he has these feelings himself. When Leo accused him of being gay right at the end that seemed to be what tipped him over the edge. He was clearly full of self loathing, hatred, bought into conspiracy theories and generally felt irrelevant in his own life.

I get herd mentality is a very real thing but still find it implausible that so many men watching footy would genuinely be ok with murdering a man for being gay. Seemed far fetched.

Also despite the great writing, there were one too many scenes that seemed to exist purely for the sake of a big monologue or speech to get a view across. Alan and Neil were both fabulous and deserve all the awards for acting, the writing I’m not quite as sold on.

It really was a good watch though.

So I do think its a harrowing account of what could happen

Me and DH said much the same once we'd finished the last episode.

I also felt the ending was far fetched re the herd mentality.
I thought everything else made for the best tv I’ve seen in a long time.

It’s hard to imagine that it could turn from that into a full, murderous lynching in broad daylight on a residential street. I’m still thinking about it days on. It was shocking but unbelievable at the end. Herd mentality exists but to think so many young men could turn into murderers just at the flip of a switch like that is a bit much.

Times have changed. This lynching happened in a post Covid era so there would have been people working from home, pottering about, all sorts. RTD just wanted to make a stupidly heavy-handed point, as usual.

I have thought about this over the previous weeks.

It was really good to have a drama so worthy of discussion.

My impression is that gay rights have overall made a lot of headway since the 80s, especially among younger people, who can't understand the centuries of illegality. I would hope that this will continue.

It seems to me that there was latterly a big push by TRAs, for more publicity and space for transexuals, which is a different issue. There has been a pushback in some ways on that. So, it might feel to some TRAs that people are now having to "tiptoe" where once they appeared to be entitled to demand places in women's sports teams / protected spaces etc. It is true, there has been a redefining of rights that has affected this group. I notice that the "tiptoe" speech is spoken by a MtF transexual and not by the poor man who gets lynched.

I would certainly hope that there can be tolerance towards gay people and also protection of women's spaces.

I still think that conflicting rights in our society often involve us "tiptoeing" around each other, trying to see things from both points of view etc.

And no, that doesn't mean that I think the David Morrisey character was justified in his actions.
