That's a new one on me. Live and learn!

I'm still an episode behind because DH watches rugby on Thursday so, even if I could stay awake then, it seems fair to let him watch his live programme.
I know: I'm just too nice 😄
Anyway, my aunt, whose first language was Welsh, used to call spring onions "gibbons" (soft G, not like the animals) presumably from the Welsh for spring onions "sibwns".
She also remembered the "Johnny Onions" men who used to come to Wales selling onions. They used to be called "Sioni Wynwns" pronounced "Shoony Onions" because "Sion" is John in Welsh.
Hope my spelling is okay, I'm not a Welsh speaker myself.

And I'm another missing Esma and hoping all is well with her.

We're away to Everton on Monday night.

Davros · 01/05/2026 11:03

@ilovesooty oh dear. Better than Utd though

bungobungobungo · 02/05/2026 10:33

@GrandTheftWalrusLive in England now but we used to call them that too, although they were spelt syboes.

LaMarschallin · 02/05/2026 15:34

Completely caught up now.
I don't think we should introduce "layers of flavour" onto the "Drink!" bingo card as we'd all be carted off with alcohol poisoning halfway through.
It's every other sentence, afaics.
I'm not even sure what it means. I see you can get different flavours from different combinations on your fork, or depth of flavour, or complex flavours...
But layers just reminds of some really good gobstoppers I had as a child which actually changed flavour as well as colour when you sucked them.
It may be my problem though as I completely lost my sense of smell after a virus in my 20s (so definitely not Covid!) and it's never come back properly.

I'm out tonight so I've already seen it. Won't spoil it for anyone else though. See you tomorrow.

Thanks @bungobungobungo - I'm confused by the Bank Hol and had lost track of the fact that it's Monday!
