I'm still an episode behind because DH watches rugby on Thursday so, even if I could stay awake then, it seems fair to let him watch his live programme.
I know: I'm just too nice 😄
Anyway, my aunt, whose first language was Welsh, used to call spring onions "gibbons" (soft G, not like the animals) presumably from the Welsh for spring onions "sibwns".
She also remembered the "Johnny Onions" men who used to come to Wales selling onions. They used to be called "Sioni Wynwns" pronounced "Shoony Onions" because "Sion" is John in Welsh.
Hope my spelling is okay, I'm not a Welsh speaker myself.
