The next series starts on the 21st April. Looking forward to banquettes, and bizarre paint choices, and upcycling of old junk. DD and I are rewatching the old series and I’d forgotten how crazy some of the rooms were!

I did also wonder if Emmerleeee is the winner and so we have this as a setback/journey episode where she cries about being on the sofa even though she did her best and really tried etc etc. I can see it fitting into a “how far she’s come” montage perfectly.

it annoys me so much that Michelle goes on about learning and growing and seems to want to teach the designers or have her listen to them, when her advice is always conflicting or not constructive and generally unhelpful and while they’re actively designing/doing the rooms, it’s Alan and his comedy set pieces who turns up when it might have been actually helpful to get a pointer or steer from Michelle halfway through.

I agree that Emerlee is the winner. They did something similar a few series ago..a designer who did everything in black and was always having disasters/in tears who went on to win it

Victoriawould24 · 28/05/2026 23:51

Agree it’s odd most of them aren’t even designers or aspiring designers.
Duran said something at the end about not being a designer, I wonder if they are approached via social media and invited to audition and then fit the ‘aspiring interior designer’ bit around their actual interests in painting or whatever.

Friendlygingercat · 29/05/2026 01:28

I love this series but cant stand Allan Carr. He is not in the least funny and they should bin him. If I was rushing to finish and he waddled up with his inane remarks I would feel obliged to tell him to fuck off.

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 29/05/2026 07:04

I just watched the end result last night. Couldn't be bothered with the rest. I didn't think the gift show was that bad. I agree striped wallpaper and trying to sell art don't mix. The guitar shop looked very cool and sleek.

I kind of get what they are saying with organising by price point in a normal shop, but surely if they are all arranged in no particular order, it starts a conversation with the shop owner about what works in your budget and they can give their advice. I'm a 'go in a shop and get it done with minimal interaction' person, but I probably wouldn't be if I was spending hundreds on a guitar. I get that comment and I don't. If I was just browsing and thinking about it then a pricing heirachy works better.

I still think the guitar shop should have won. I'm certain that Sophie has been earmarked for the win. I think NEXT want a bit of leopard print in their collection maybe. Kat Slater will be pleased.

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 29/05/2026 07:54

And yes, I do find it overly camp and cringey with the Allan Carr stuff, even though I do like him and find him funny normally.

Also don't get why they didn't put Emmerly and Sophie together for the guitar shop and the other two together for the middle class gift shop. Much better pairing for the tasks.

Emmely got to choose her partner because of winning standout space last week.

Ah I see. Sorry I didn't watch all of it. I can kind of see why she may have picked Duran then and not the other two if it was a choice.

Yes that choice made sense to me - Lia and Sophie both do overblown, over fussy stuff although Lia does at least try to think about the client. Duran’s wiggly lines are not my cup of tea but she is closer in style to Emmerly.

I assume if Lia or Sophie are tagged to win we can expect to see nondescript leopard print or dried flower lampshades in Next.

With the contestants that are now left, I would definitely want Emmerly to win - which given that in the first episode I was seriously dubious about her and the ubiquitous papier-mâché is quite a switch!

She has demonstrated that she listens, is focused, has researched her projects well and actually delivered. Her art school training shows she has more than just paper and paste to her skill set.

YES!!! Thank you, thank you. Every time I saw it I uttered a moan of distress and DH had to keep telling me to shut up 😂

Edited

Me too! So annoying. The only way it might have worked was if there was a leaf next to it. As was the gift shop winning. Even my dh, who was half watching, loved the guitar shop, which the name is just superb. I had a look at what they looked like now and was glad to see the guitar shop was still the same, albeit with a large motorbike in the middle.
I hope Emmerly wins next week but I suspect it might be Lia

WonderfulSmith · 29/05/2026 12:17

i don’t understand how people think that Emmerly will win so this episode has to be a set back one for her to make us want her to win. That would mean it would already have been decided when they filmed this episode.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 29/05/2026 13:35

I am another one who didnt understand the results. The guitar shop was lovely and what the owner wanted.

I do wonder if Michelle had a winner in mind rather than week as it comes.

No its not that this episode has to be a setback .its the way she is being portrayed all along and thats achieved through lots of editing once the whole series has been filmed, not fixing the outcome

NotTheOrdinary · 29/05/2026 14:43

I didn't like Emmerly much at first with her paper mache. But she seems the only one who has actually learnt and taken on board what the judges have said. I'd quite like her to win now.

I agree - and I hold my hand up to having been extremely dubious about her (and her 'paper-maché) at the start.

She started to win me over with her very efficient organisation of the art room in the shelter (although even then the judging was all over the place - she and Johnny were praised because the shelter staff were thrilled with it, while the other team - who also got great feedback for their results - were kicked out).

I understand that these things are edited in reverse. So that the people who go out early on get some air time etc but she was on the sofa this episode, that can’t be edited in in retrospect.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 29/05/2026 16:54

I don't think IDM or the prize are big enough deals to engineer a winner in that way. I think the terrible judging is purely the result of a terrible judge, not somebody being forced to lie to present a certain narrative.

I don’t understand what you mean sorry?

WonderfulSmith · 29/05/2026 17:35

People were saying that Emmerly had a spot on the sofa and a set back to make us feel for her because she will be the eventual winner.
The show is edited after it’s finished, so the editors will know who to focus on each episode etc. What they can’t do is change who gets a set back.

AlwaysRightISwear · 29/05/2026 18:37

Emmely has definitely improved

NotSoLittle · 29/05/2026 21:28

I still think the prize is stupid - it's supposed to be an interior design show, not product design. If BBC can't get someone to give the winner a proper interior design job like in early series they should give them a cash prize and some mentoring.

But a huge part of interior design is dressing the room, esp with things which might not seem like they'd work together.

This will give them- hopefully- a range of items which will be a bit more "daring" in their home dept

I think by the quarter finals they have a pretty good idea of who the winner could/should be. It’s not like it’s the first episode. They might not be 100% sure (in that it’s still up for grabs) but it works either way - if Emerlee now wins it’s the setback narrative. If either of the other team win it’s a track record/exit velocity narrative.

I've been thinking about the choice of inappropriate book leaves chosen to display in the window, easily read by any customer (I would definitely read them to try to identify the book Grin). I am really pissed off actually.

If it were my shop I would immediately ask for them to removed as so unprofessional. I wonder if that happened after the programme? The fact that the photo of the current window has no leaves makes this very possible. Alternative books could include one from the Harry Potter series; books which have been read by millions. The designer who made that decision should have gone imo.

What other books could she have chosen that would be more appropriate?

I fully agree that Lia deserved to go on that alone. I think it was a really poor move on her part.
