Vonn looked really unlucky twisting like that after clipping the gate. It was awful listening to her screaming; must have been terrible for those surrounding too

Really hoping for an update that she is ok (although assuming her skiing career will be over, poor thing?)

She put her arm right through the gate which is why she was spun around and twisted so badly

Thanks @Lunde yes that makes sense now!

Silverbirchleaf · 08/02/2026 17:35

I was wondering where all these commentators come from, names not instantly recognisable, who are experts in all these sports, their rules, competitors etc.

On commentators, I do like listening to John Hunt. He’s a real inspiration.

Yes for the last few seasons they ski with these air-bag vests that inflate if they hit the ground hard to reduce the risk of spinal events.

They have them in some equestrian events as well as I remember it from someone falling on the cross country course in Paris 2024 and this airbag exploded

I think the air bags started with moto GP or super bikes. They make a lot of sense.

Wooohoo Max [waving my imaginary German flag]

SabrinaThwaite · 08/02/2026 18:22

Update on Lindsey Vonn is that she fractured her leg, has been operated on this afternoon and is stable.

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/02/2026 19:02

Thanks Sabrina. I’d seen the bit about being stable but nothing else. Gutted for her.

I bloody love the Winter Olympics but have been busy all weekend so was looking forward to sitting down tonight to watch some events on iPlayer. So disappointing to the the results of the events in the titles of the iPlayer programmes! I now know who's won the women's downhill before I've even watched it, which spoils it somewhat. I'm so cross about it I'm making a complaint to the BBC.

I haven't RTFT so I'm sorry if this has already been covered!

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/02/2026 19:18

I have just put in a complaint @SlartibartfastsPencil. In the meantime I have switched to discovery+ if I’m not watching live.

I've just taken out a Discovery+ subscription purely so I can watch without spoilers. The ads are annoying though, grrrr.

Women's big air seem to be better at landing

HollyGolightly4 · 08/02/2026 19:31

Apart from poor Maisie

Silverbirchleaf · 08/02/2026 21:00

Why are there so many empty seats at the skating?

Enjoyed the skating and the big air tonight

Is Vance there?

Silverbirchleaf · 08/02/2026 21:57

Yes, the skating was good, although I still don’t know what an axel is, despite watching skating all my life, although obviously I am an expert, like all mn-etters, on all things Olympic sport related.

stomachamelon · 08/02/2026 22:10

@Silverbirchleafapparently it’s the oldest and moat difficult jump. Something to do with forward take off and backward landing. :0

Thewonderfuleveryday · 08/02/2026 22:24

I've just managed to catch up on Vonn. What was she thinking even attempting it?! Another skier could of had her place.

FurForksSake · 08/02/2026 22:25

I think there will be a lot of discussion about poor Vonn. I hope her injury won’t be life changing.

The thing is, the crash was unrelated to her left knee injury as she accidently hooked the control gate with her right arm trying to get a tight line. I think anyone would have had a horrific injury after doing that at 60mph.

Kirschcherries · 08/02/2026 22:48

Chemmy Alcott was clear a fully healthy skier would not have been able to stop the fall after her arm hooked the gate. Lindsey had also done two practice runs and was quick.

stomachamelon · 08/02/2026 23:10

@Thewonderfuleveryday she qualified the same as everyone else and had completed practice runs. Most commentators based on those runs expected her to medal

MouldyCandy · 08/02/2026 23:22

But possibly a fully healthy skiier with nothing to prove and not overcompensating / favouring her weight over one leg and not the other and with perhaps better balance/coordination would not have (made a mistake?) taken a line that meant she did end up clipping the gate.

Lindsay takes risks. The line she took, for whatever reason, caused her to clip the gate.

smooththecat · 08/02/2026 23:47

Trying to watch the figure skating but all of the music is SO maudlin, I just can’t. Anyone else find this? Has it always been this bad?
