It's snowy, chilly, January (2026.) CORONATION STREET THREAD. **No spoilers please.**

1000 replies

SabreIsMyFave · 09/01/2026 22:12

The last thread filled up quickly! (2 weeks!) Shows Coronation Street is gaining popularity again. Smile (It has improved quite a bit lately!)

R.I.P. Billy Mayhew. Flowers

Todd continues to be manipulated by Theo, Summer has done some stellar sobbing (that's brought me to tears!) and it seems there's no-one to help poor Todd.

Not much has been seen of The Driscolls for a while. after the tragedy around Corriedale, and Billy the vicar dying. (I'm sure they're about somewhere!)

Lisa (Swain) is being manipulated by Undead Becky now, (from prison) and she's threatening to 'take her down with her' if she doesn't have her back! Not sure Carla wants Lisa back anyway after Lisa slept with Becky!

Poor Debbie is all over the place, trying desperately to defend evil Carl who has stolen from her, cheated on Abi, and caused all kinds of destruction with a car, (twice - and both times he's got away with it!)

Shona and David's new baby is in hospital for a while after being born prematurely, and Shona's sister has appeared suddenly! I guess we'll learn more about her, and why she and Shona have not seen each other for some years.

Sorry if I've left anything out. I'm sure we'll all catch up soon. Smile

Yes, I was thinking back to the mystery baby of Toyah's, buried in a park poor thing.

I hate this ridiculous way they shoe horn extra mad stuff from the past into the present.

Yes that is a bit annoying. As I said earlier in the thread, I reckon this new information on Wiki Corrie page going into detail about Debbie getting pregnant (in 1986) and Bill and Elaine hiding it - and saying the baby (Carl) was their baby, wasn't even there until this month!

And yes, what on earth was the point of that 'Toyah had a baby and buried in the park some years ago' nonsense?! Early noughties it was meant to have happened I think... Yet NOTHING was mentioned about it in Corrie at the time.

If I recall correctly, in 2001 Classic Corrie (at the time where Toyah should have been 6-7 months pregnant,) she was serving in the cafe, and her stomach was a flat as a pancake. No sign of any baby belly at all.

That was highlighted on Twitter - and I think on Digital Spy, and maybe even on here at the time...

Bad continuity, and a really nonsensical, pointless,, not-needed storyline... (Like a few others as you said.......)

Yes, I think when the Baby Rose storyline happened, what happened to Toyah in Classic, it was the aftermath from what I remember so it’s quite an insult to viewers when they say something happened and it really didn’t because we have Classics to refer back too

Shellingbynight · 18/01/2026 14:07

I don't know why they did the Baby Rose storyline. It didn't lead anywhere, and that time span had been on Classic recently and was easy to check. They will probably never mention it again!

zanahoria · 18/01/2026 14:19

Shellingbynight · 18/01/2026 13:39

I think Baby Rose was possibly the most ridiculous rewriting of history they've done. So far!

I hope Bill's character is not going to be trashed in the service of this storyline. He was such a good character, I've been watching him on Classic.

There are some other hot contenders notably the absurd nonsense of giving Tyrone a new grandma and then later a new mum. Although I have to admit that as I have a habit of switching off when they start talking about all that nonsense I am probably not the best person to judge.

I was at school with a girl who was a size 6 when she gave birth. Very very small bump. But a bump nonetheless. So even knowing that, I think the Toyah story is stupid.

Shellingbynight · 18/01/2026 14:31

@zanahoria yes there have been some stinkers. But the new grandma got us Maureen Lipman, and it hasn't done any harm to other characters (you couldn't really do a lot of harm to Jackie could you!) I can almost forgive those type of rewritings.

The Debbie-Carl plot seems to have been added for double extra drama, apparently having dementia and being conned out of your money then falsely set up for killing Vicar Billy isn't enough - it has to be done by your own monstrous git of a secret son.

Yeah, it annoyed me when Tyrone's mum came back in (after some years, maybe a decade or so) and it was Claire Sweeney and not Margi Clarke. Then it turned out Margi (Jackie) had been a stepmum after all, and Claire (Cassie) was actually the bio mum. I was like WTF? Confused

Like why? Was Margi not available? Did she not want to do it? And then they killed off Jackie - so she can NEVER come back anyway.

That said, I do like Claire Sweeney/the Cassie character. Took a bit of warming to, but I like her now. And I do like Maureen Lipman's character! (Evelyn.)

I didn't understand why they didn't just recast Jackie, fair enough they wanted to bring in more family for Tyrone but they didn't have to change his life history.

Fun fact - Tyrone is 44. Claire Sweeney who plays his mother is only 54!

Interesting although I think that’s CS ‘stage age’ as she was a lot older than me when she was in Brookside & that age only puts her a couple of years older!

My mum was 30 at the same time Madonna was (as I was 10 & remember being amazed they were the same age) & now I think Madonna is almost 10 years younger Grin

Oh that's mad that there's only a 10 year age gap! 😆 But also, Gail and Audrey only have a 7 year age gap don't they? 😆 (I mean the actresses Helen and Sue....) I think there is meant to be 17 years between the characters.

Also, re Tyrone.... They could have brought Claire in as his aunt. Didn't have to be his bio mum that was never mentioned... ever before.. 🙄

@Daytimetellyqueen I did wonder about CS, I thought she was older. 54 makes her 20 when she started in Brookside, which is plausible but she may have shaved some years off I suppose. The most famous example of that was Doris Speed (Annie Walker) who de-aged herself by 15 years.

@SabreIsMyFave yes there is a very small age gap between Aud and Gail, which was surprisingly un-obvious!

1reason · 18/01/2026 17:26

Looks like Corrie writers will be using more of these ' plot devices'...rewriting history and creating flashbacks/ flashforwards.
We cannot assume we know anything for sure.
Corriedale itself seems so long ago.. but was only on 5 January!

Recasting Jackie would have been weird as Margi Clarke was just so right in the role

We also had Tyrone's dad briefly,a funny little man who did not look much older than him.

I am guessing Cassie was another one of Corrie's 13 year old mums

I’m sure Tyrone’s bio father played Carl Banks in Brookside.

Dear Scriptwriters,

🙏Please, please, please do a nice, big, juicy flashforwards and get rid of the odious Will, his dreadful Megan trainer, Gemma, and everyone else who is annoying and pointless. No storyline necessary, just get rid. And bring back Billy, seeing as we now realise he wasn't as irritating as we thought while he was alive.

TIA

Yours hopefully 🙏

Lesser and many others on this thread I've no doubt xx

PS By Monday's episode, if at all possible Grin

@Shellingbynight

I think it looks a bit more than 7 years too... (Gail and Audrey age gap.) Not sure why. I think Gail (Helen Worth) has always looked maybe around 7 years younger than her age, and Audrey (Sue Nicholls) has always looked a bit closer to her real age.

So for instance, when Sue was 59 and Helen was 52, Sue looked 'late 50s' and Helen looked mid 40s IMO. So it is believable that Sue could be Helen's mum, though it does look like she must have been a teen mum.

The worst thing about the Tyrone back story was that they kept piling it on. We had one pile of nonsense when Evelyn joined then they laid more on top when Cassie rocked up. There was one episode with the pair of them having a huge row about absurd events that had happened to them 40 years back that nobody watching would have had much idea about. I was stone cold flummoxed.

The weird thing is that teen pregnancy rates have been falling for decades. The only place they are on the rise is in soaps.

zanahoria · 18/01/2026 20:33

I wish they would give it a rest. Before he realised Shona was pregnant, David accused Lily of doing the pregnancy test. She had just turned 12.

My Eldest was born in the 80s 9 months after our wedding, a honeymoon baby. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who go out their diaries to work out if we were married before he was conceived!

Same here.We got married in February and we had our first child the following November, he was three weeks late as well. The furtive counting on fingers and head nodding that went on was rife.I can remember my great aunt saying out loud, ''Honeymoon baby but only just.''

Ooooh, yes I remember that. Most men in their right minds - if they found a pregnancy test at home - would NOT think it belonged to their 12 year old daughter! 🙄

Ah but come on - David's own sister got up the duff at 12, so course he'd think it!

Oh yeah. 😆 Not that uncommon on Corrie!

Whilst I have known a number of cases where a girl had a baby in her teens, I don't think I have ever known any woman have one at 12!

Youngest I can recall is 14-15. A few girls fell pregnant in their mid teens when I was a similar age (late 1970s/early 1980s,) A few in the neighbourhood, daughters of work colleagues, and daughters of acquaintances and so on..... Most of them had left school though. I can count of the fingers of two hands the amount of girls/women I know (or have ever known) who had a baby whilst still at school. And as I say, I have never known any girl have a baby at the age of 12, or even 13. I know it happens, but I have just not known it happen to anyone I know. Like I said, the youngest 'mum' I have ever known was 14. Most of them (who were in their teens) were 16-19
