Call the midwife

The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

Just caught up on last nights episode.

I saw PP comment about Timothy-he's fine but his "deer in the headlight" panicked eye acting does distract from the actual scene.

I think the whole Cyril storyline is now bordering on ridiculous.
Didn't he start out being a student? An engineer? He was fixing Phyllis's scooter? Then a Pastor and suddenly also the only social worker in Poplar with immediate effect.
He is still married to poor Lucille and still a "Pastor" whilst romancing Rosalind and now proposing to her?? Whilst still married.
Just wildly unbelievable and I don't feel like they have any chemistry at all and it is so forced and I know we are supposed to be rooting for them against the world but I am just not. Wish he'd gone with Lucille.
Men that aren't Dr Turner never do well on CTM 😂

Another that has jumped the shark is poor Trixie who is so surplus to requirements she is arranging flowers at Nonnatus House.
It is like watching a slow lingering death...

And I am not made of stone and I did cry at Sister Monica Joan and the poignancy of her story ending with not wanting sweet treats is such a sad sign of her decline.
The memory of her with Jenny Lee and the cake at the beginning 💖

I don’t think Rosalind will be suited to the role of a pastor’s wife to be honest. It’s a bit like Trixie not being suited to the role of a vicar’s wife when she was engaged to Tom. Plus there’s an age gap with her and Cyril and he is clearly much more mature.

I think they will end up together, but I’m not sure it’s the best or most realistic thing for the characters. Really they should have recast Lucille when the actress left or Cyril should have left with her.

I agree with this. My cousin was a priests wife. She was very circumspect. Would never have been so blatantly telling Cyril in public that she was no longer a virgin. (Though I did admire the character being so vocal). 21st century ideas wouldn’t work in the 70’s, although times were changing, not that fast I don’t think.

jay55 · 09/02/2026 16:03

They should have recast Lucille. And not given Cyril a hundred careers.

bizzey · 09/02/2026 16:55

Cyril needed a new, kind hearted and compassionate Lucille beside him ...

Not a feisty. (Where did that come from !) Feminist , shout from the roof tops about having sex and loosing my virginity, who gives a fuck ....sort of girl friend !

I agree. This was the way it was often done in TV days of yore. It could be a bit jarring at first, but you soon got used to it.

Also Timothy is super creepy as a doctor. Or just as the character.

No! I like him.

It’s also fun when we see him playing the piano, and getting better over time, as the actor must have been having lessons as he grows up.

Just checked, apparently it was legally possible for a single woman to adopt, but highly unusual and very seldom allowed.

My impressions from colleagues’ experiences over the ‘70s to the ‘90s is that it became increasingly difficult even for married couples to adopt babies, presumably because of the increased availability of abortions. Remembering one particular couple, it wasn’t that easy for them even in the late ‘70s, but there may have been reasons particular to them which, for completely understandable reasons, I didn’t know about.

I think that single women might have been able to adopt babies and older children if the children had significant health difficulties, though.

Ones I remember are Lucy in neighbours and Miss Ellie in Dallas. Also that Fallon in dynasty. That’s showing my age!

Pippa in Home and Away "getting a new head," is one of my strongest TV memories. (I'm not too sure if that was what my friends and only used to say about it when she changed from one of user to the next or whether it was a countrywide thing.)

It would definitely better just to re-cast Lucille, if only so we would have had something to poke fun at for the rest of the series.

Pippa going to get the washing in (or something) then coming in with a new head was one of the most iconic moments in TV 🤣

I’ve just caught up on the episode, couldn’t Cyril just step down as a pastor? That would make more sense, he has a steady job now. I thought Rosalind did well not to slap him with that cack handed proposal 🤦‍♀️

I agree they should have just replaced Lucille though, it made no sense that she randomly left him. They could have had a couple of babies by now. I always think Cyril is a complete wet blanket though.

SMJ can’t die <wobberly lip>

I think Timothy is good casting, he looks like Dr T!

I don't want sister Monica Joan to die. I suspect that she will die unless doctor Turner has some kind of magic cure ffor kidney failure.

If the order has to move to continue (which seems to be the logical course of action), there’s no way sr MJ would cope with the move at her age anyway.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/02/2026 16:45

I thought swollen ankles was more a symptom of heart failure than dodgy kidneys. I’ve just booked a boiler service off the back of watching this weeks episode 🙈😂

I appreciate SMJ can’t live forever but her dying would very much be the end of an era. I think the actress who plays her is amazing as well, she’s such a good character.

eggandonion · 10/02/2026 16:58

Dr Turner will sort out dialysis and a transplant.

Agree, would have been tough on the actor if he wanted to stay but Cyril leaving to join Lucille in Jamaica would have been better, Cyril isn’t central to CTM and everyone prefers a happy ending!

nhgto · 10/02/2026 21:16

Just watched Sundays episode. I did like it, I think Timothy is exactly like his dad - brilliant casting!
why do they always show shelagah and dr turner hugging when something goes wrong? 🤣
that woman with sister J at the end was so random and I doubt we will see her again!! But that scene made me miss the older seasons and when there was lots of episodes similar to that! God I miss the early seasons 🤣

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/02/2026 08:46

She was significant in terms of long term plot as suggested above regarding Sister Julienne's mission and prompting the change of focus and move North for the Order.

Handeyethingyowl · 12/02/2026 08:34

I guess with Cyril it is significant that they he feels he has now made a life and a career in the UK and feels settled while Lucille doesn’t and becomes desperate to go home. Having said that I didn’t like the Lucille depression storyline, it came a bit out of nowhere.

Yes, but they only wrote Lucille out because the actress wanted to leave. They should have recast her, the Lucille and Cyril storyline went on for a while and then she just leaves. It wasn’t very true to the character and it was a shame.

AuntyAngela · 12/02/2026 13:59

They should have either recast or kill Lucille off. Let's face it, Covid social distancing had doomed the storyline of them as a couple already. Lucille turning into a different person wouldn't have any affect on the realism of it. 😂
