The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

Interesting that they are showing how unwell she is by having her not interested at the thought of strawberry scones.

I love how young Master Timothy Turner behaved. I think he’s a lovely character played by a good actor. It can be a bit random as child actors grow up but he’s fine. Perhaps I can’t see for looking but I don’t see him in the cast list for tonight in Radio Times.

I like sister Monica Joan. I will cry when she dies although it is expected. My grandma had kidney failure.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning leaves its victims with bright red cheeks, makeup missed a trick there.
When was this episode supposed to be set? It’s the end of August but everyone is eating fresh strawberries which are well over by then.
The surgery door came surprisingly clean for a quick dab with a turpsy rag, there was no stain and the underlying paint was undamaged.

August. So it’s odd they had the central heating on.

I think they put the heating on because they were feeling cold because of the food poisoning.

InMySpareTime · 09/02/2026 07:36

Even more odd putting on the central heating in summer to help a fever. Most doctors would suggest bit of fresh air, but that would have completely broken the storyline. They should have put that story in one of the winter episodes.

What’s the point of Sister V leaving because she wants a baby? She’s too old to have one, and would she be able to adopt as a single woman in those days?

That's why people think Trixie's brother might marry her.

I agree, it’s a bit strange. The actress is 50 and the characters looks late 40s, so it seems improbable she would be able to have one naturally.

And in those days the only real way to get pregnant would be to have sex with a man, and it doesn’t seem she has those urges, only the broodiness. And she would need to be married due to the stigma, so it wouldn’t be a quick thing, she needs to find a man first.
Not sure if being a single woman would be a barrier to adoption but I think adoption is more realistic in this case.

It would have been better and more interesting if the story had more of a focus on a nun regretting not having children (while approaching menopause), but then ultimately making peace with it, as many women do who struggle with infertility. They’ve already done the Nun leaving the order for marriage and babies (Shelagh).

Toddlerteaplease · 09/02/2026 09:27

I can’t see any reason for Trixie’s brother being in the series unless he marries her.

repeatpleaseagain · 09/02/2026 10:07

The founder of Helen House in Oxford, a nun, adopted a Ghanaian orphan and brought him back to Oxford, but that was in 1989.

jay55 · 09/02/2026 11:19

Couldn’t sister V transfer to working in a children’s home rather than in maternity. Being a foster parent is far more realistic than having a child.

jay55 · 09/02/2026 11:20

Also Timothy is super creepy as a doctor. Or just as the character.

Clawdy · 09/02/2026 11:20

Just checked, apparently it was legally possible for a single woman to adopt, but highly unusual and very seldom allowed.

bizzey · 09/02/2026 11:21

I don't know if anyone here watches Eastenders ...but the ? prostitute lady Lana , was Dotty Cotton actress Milly Zero !!

Did not recognize her. all !!

Toddlerteaplease · 09/02/2026 11:36

Why wasn’t Cyril rocking up to sort out the prostitute? He’s a social worker and that was definitely a child protection issue!

Oh Wow
I wouldn't have guessed either
Fantastic make up skills (and I noted the state of the teeth so some kind of tooth thing too).

InMySpareTime · 09/02/2026 12:00

The squalid birth storyline felt really tacked on to make Sr Julienne actually make a decision. I doubt we’ll hear anything more about the mother or the baby.
Glad Cyril finally had a talking to about his relationship. They were both far too indiscreet for a small community and in the church’s eyes it’s still
an adulterous affair. Even nowadays a church leader having a premarital sexual relationship while separated but not divorced would be considered wrong.
When a long-divorced and remarried friend of mine was training for ministry I had to personally vouch for how the first marriage ended (which wasn’t anything to do with my friend) and the length of time between the finalised divorce and the start of the current relationship so the church could assess suitability for ministry.

NewAgeNewMe · 09/02/2026 13:06

I will cry when SMJ goes. It seems as if this is heading for being the last series, but I thought it had been renewed. Off to check.

There will be a film set overseas with the current cast, which will probably be the end of the current story.

There is also a prequel series set to film this year and air next year, set in WW2. Maybe they’re waiting to see how well that does before committing to more than one series for this time period. I think it’s more likely they will continue with this than ever return to the 1970s.

I don’t think Rosalind will be suited to the role of a pastor’s wife to be honest. It’s a bit like Trixie not being suited to the role of a vicar’s wife when she was engaged to Tom. Plus there’s an age gap with her and Cyril and he is clearly much more mature.

I think they will end up together, but I’m not sure it’s the best or most realistic thing for the characters. Really they should have recast Lucille when the actress left or Cyril should have left with her.

Needmorelego · 09/02/2026 13:18

@notimpressedatm yes Rosalind....oh Rosalind
"I'm not a virgin anymore" said loudly in a public park.
Have some dignity gal.

This would have been better. Given Sister Veronica is 50 odd, it feels more like a midlife crisis or problems adjusting to perimenopause than broodiness. Would someone of her age even have been allowed to adopt?

Wonder if Trixie and Matthew will divorce? He hasn’t been in CTM for ages - considering his only child is in a different country you’d think he’d visit…

Too busy being a randy doctor in Casualty !

It probably wasn't relevant to the plot. The incident was only there to confirm in Sister Julienne's mind that her vocation was to the Mission and charitable work rather than join the NHS. It's a way of bringing the story in Poplar to an end.
