The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

I did wonder if they’d decided to cut the Christopher storyline short because the toddler was getting himself so upset on set. I know a lot
of the time he was meant to be upset having treatment but I noticed at the end of a previous episode when he went back to the Turners he was screaming his head off even though the other children were having to act that they were happy to see him. Maybe they decided that rather than change the actor they’d change the storyline and get rid of him?!

@LadyWiddiothethird even today children’s Oncology is treated in specialist tertiary hospitals.

Army doctors/nurses etc work in the NHS hospitals now.

Although the dentist on one if our postings was Major Payne. Genuinely. He used his first name for the children's appointments.

This thread has reminded me that a friend at college lived near a hospital which was always referred to as RAF Ely. It’s called the Princess of Wales now.

It has a Wikipedia page.

Timothy is back. I bet he will try and take over like his dad.

Wonder if Trixie and Matthew will divorce? He hasn’t been in CTM for ages - considering his only child is in a different country you’d think he’d visit…

notimpressedatm · 08/02/2026 20:21

Carbon monoxide poisoning?

I think she will move to NYC permanently at the end of the series

Is Paul, the asthmatic lad, the same actor who played the son in the John Lewis Christmas advert? I’ve been trying to work out why he’s familiar!

WonderfulSmith · 08/02/2026 20:34

I’m trying to work out who the grandma is.

HagCymraeg · 08/02/2026 20:35

I know the grandma from playing Julia's MIL in Motherland

That’s it. Thank you. DH is usually very good at remembering what people are from but he didn’t know. (Of course he doesn’t watch CTMW, he just sits in the living room and looks in the direction of the tv).

Yes it is - Jack Alldridge

So the solution to Ceril upsetting the church elders by going on a weekend away with a woman while still married….. is to go on another weekend away and get engaged to said woman, while still married?

PrimalScreaming · 08/02/2026 20:54

It's all going a bit Pete Tong!

notimpressedatm · 08/02/2026 20:55

The actress who plays Sister Veronica is 50. Maybe the character is supposed to be a bit younger, but surely she would be too old to have a child naturally anyway?

Feels as if this is heading towards an end. Perhaps the prewar series will be Sister Monica Joan’s final memories.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/02/2026 21:07

The woman living in squalor and her baby seemed thrown in at the end but I think she was the sign for Sister Julienne to take the order elsewhere to care for drug addicts. This is what happened in real life.

Needmorelego · 08/02/2026 21:10

Sister Monica Joan....nooooooooo 😭😭😭😭😭
Not yet. She can't go yet.
This series is meant to be 1971. Her character biography has her born 1873. I really hope the planned feature length film after this series takes us to 1973 and she gets to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Heidi Thomas....if you are reading this I demand it !!!!!

Yes they moved to Birmingham in real life (in 76 I think). Later on I believe they cared for AIDS patients but that wouldn't have been to the mid 80s I expect when more was known about AIDS.
I get sad thinking that Trixie's brother is of the era of gay men who sadly caught AIDS 😭🙁

Needmorelego · 08/02/2026 21:15

On a lighter note....my daughter wants to know if Rosalind's hair is a wig.

It definitely does.

I predict the following will happen in ep 8:
SMJ will die
The Nuns will leave Poplar
Trixie will move to NY permanently

They are supposed to be doing a film with the current cast overseas, so maybe that’s where the Nuns will head to. At the end of that I think Dr Turner will retire and Timothy will qualify. Trixie will make an appearance and announce she’s pregnant. Sister Veronica/ Beryl will have adopted a baby. Nurse Crane and Phyllis will retire and go travelling to India together. Cyril and Rosamund will get married. I would love if some the early cast make an appearance (Jenny, Chummy, Patsy etc).

Poor sister monica joan.

Interesting that they are showing how unwell she is by having her not interested at the thought of strawberry scones.

I love how young Master Timothy Turner behaved. I think he’s a lovely character played by a good actor. It can be a bit random as child actors grow up but he’s fine. Perhaps I can’t see for looking but I don’t see him in the cast list for tonight in Radio Times.

In the very first episode when Jenny arrived Sister MJ had eaten all the cake. Quite clever linking back to this.

I agree Timothy will be a very empathetic doctor.
