Call the midwife

The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

Diane, we need your head up and bottom down.

Imagine having to act this 😂😂

Fatfreefatball · 26/12/2025 19:02

@teeenia I and many others find the attitudes and values of this era far preferable to the 'woke" shit we are constantly fed by the BBC. If you weren't around then, you have no right to judge. It's a drama not a lecture.

tortoisewoman · 26/12/2025 19:23

I think the episode was fine, though DW and I now have a yearly tradition of making bingo cards and whooping when we tick things off (e.g. "inane smiling", "Trixie has a hair/makeup issue", "Shelagh doing wholesome motherly things"). I think everyone loved the South Africa Christmas special a few years ago so they've thought they need to take them abroad to make it exciting.
What I found weird was Timothy smoking when he made a huge fuss as a teenager about making his dad give up because of the cancer risk! I guess the youth are hypocritical 😂

Bingo card is a great idea. I would add to it Dr Turner being right about something, and Sister Monica Joan having those spectacularly lucid teachable moments.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2025 20:41

The baby had Anencephaly, we haven’t had that yet.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2025 20:48

Oo I was right

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2025 21:04

Trixie is asking to be struck off for exceeding her role.

notimpressedatm · 26/12/2025 21:17

I’m finding these Christmas episodes quite boring, but how unbelievable is it that the Turners would swan off to Hong Kong and leave their 3 kids in the care of Timothy? Plus it was surely very expensive to get to Hong Kong in those days.

PrimalScreaming · 26/12/2025 21:33

That was just fucking weird shit! I think I might have been tripping!

NimbleHiker · 26/12/2025 21:34

I think that the christmas episodes have been boring for years.

It was like a fever dream. I don't think I liked it much and I usually love it.

itsgettingweird · 26/12/2025 21:36

What the fuck was that Liverpudlian accent about?!

Plus the acting was bad!

Oh and Mays brother came to England - shocker 🤣

I never really watched CTM until
covid and then binged the whole lot and have watched since but agree it’s getting predictable and a little ridiculous!

Needmorelego · 26/12/2025 21:37

Well that was......alright 🤷
Seemed to finish really quickly.
Odd.

I suppose if he was deported from Liverpool in 1939 he'd have a very mixed accent by 1970whatever.

tortoisewoman · 26/12/2025 21:44

The whole programme has been on its last legs for years, and I say that as a fan from day one! I think when they first introduced the whole "Nonnatus House is being sold off, the East End doesn't need us anymore" stuff back in season... 6/7? and then promptly rolled it back, was when I started to feel like the plotlines were getting weaker. Thankfully the current cast of nurses and nuns is strong enough that I'm still relatively invested, but I'm under no illusions about its quality 😂

FairViewRosie25 · 26/12/2025 21:50

We used to be part of our local towns one at Christmas. One year the blokes truck we borrowed he decided to wash it the night before. Cue heavy frost and pre-schoolers skating round the flat bed……

Surprisingly for the BBC it hasnt yet gone quite too woke, although Im sure theh producers at Good old Auntie Beeb are gritting their teeth 😅 call the midwife is one of the few programmes actually watch on the Beeb, its an easy watch and some of it is a bit far fetched but hell who cares, its a drama!!

LilyBunch25 · 26/12/2025 22:05

I'm afraid its not what it was at all. No grit. And has gone way beyond the timeline of Jennifer Worths books but was believable until we started getting into late 60s early 70s. This kind of community practice was all but gone then. They only hint at that and are stretching it, historically, way too far. The first few series were really excellent drama. The recent few have become really repetitive, a bit wooden, just not the same quality.

Dollymylove · 26/12/2025 22:05

The original books were good

Back in the day I wore one of those Brownie dresses....very thin material. Hope they had good vests on.
(who does a carnival at Christmas 🤔)

This is exactly what I said to DH 🤣

Also did anyone hear Dr Turner call May “Tilly Mint”? This was my Scouser dad’s nickname for me. Is Dr T meant to be from Liverpool? (I know Stephen McGann is!)

I think Liverpool has the oldest Chinatown in the U.K., plus it’s a port, so maybe that explains the Cormorants accent?

Dr Turner told the Cormorant that he studied in Liverpool and mentioned his father having a shop on a certain street there, so he's a Scouser who's lost his accent! And yes, we were told the Cormorant was Liverpool Chinese who was deported in 1939. Unsure whether he committed any crimes or whether, as the Cormorant himself implied, he was just deported as a sort of 'enemy alien' case.

Good spot @tortoisewoman!
I need to go back and find out what street 🤣

tortoisewoman · 26/12/2025 22:13

@bigTillyMint Adorable username by the way!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2025 22:30

@bigTillyMinti think he said Cornwallis Street.

Crummles1 · 26/12/2025 22:33

Dreadful nonsense
