The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

It really was borderline panto and I love it normally!

tbh, absolutely the whole thing felt like slapstick and maybe that's the producers' aim. To make it so ridiculous people will no longer watch so it gives way for something else.

I thought sister MJ was a real person - was she not from quite a wealthy background?

My husband thinks it’s a load of twee mawkish drivel and to be fair he’s not wrong nowadays, but he doesn’t believe me when I tell him the original series based on the books are actually quite grim and gritty.

I recently watched some of the early series when I was last in bed with the dreaded lurgy and it was a lot more gritty and grim. That first Christmas special storyline that covered a former workhouse inmate was believable, haunting and had moments of humour in a natural way which seemed far more appropriate for the context of the show than last night’s episode.

It makes you think that they’ve run out of interesting new ideas.

I don't understand Trixie's storyline at all. Gets married, leaves for the USA but is always back. Why marry and send her to the USA if she wasn't actually leaving the show.

itsgettingweird · 27/12/2025 19:08

I loved them dressed up. Properly laughed - it was brilliant.

Although have to admit I was half expecting the clothes to set fire with that lighter and a bit of drama with the convent up in flames - but this was way better!

Me too! I was convinced there'd be a fire. I was relieved it went without a hitch and just fun.

I dont know why she's there at all. She's awful.

I thought tiny tim was going to have a snog in the laundry cupboard!

The triad story line was laughable, as was a whole host of people hopping on planes to HK at short notice, google tells me would have been about £300 a flight...equiv to over £5k today so just how would they ahve rustled up that money and flight availability at such short notice.

I eagerly await the prequel and may even have to abandon the next series in favour of rewatching the oldies if this nonsense carries on 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2025 20:38

@CaptainMyCaptaini thought that. Although anyone can baptise, I can’t imagine and Irish traveller
would have accepted an Anglican nun doing it.

RitaIncognita · 27/12/2025 20:58

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/12/2025 18:14

The Traveller lady desperately wanted to have her grandchild baptized but was happy to let someone perform the baptismal rite who wasn't (1) a priest and (2) a Catholic. at an ante natal class in 1980 the midwife told us that in an emergency anyone could baptise a baby so that rang completely true (although it wasn't actually an emergency ).

I think Queenie considered it an emergency because of losing her own child before it had been baptized, and that was why she insisted. And yes, the Catholic Church recognizes baptisms in those circumstances. In fact, the acceptance is broader than emergencies. The Catholic Church does not require converts who were baptized in other Christian denominations to be re-baptized.

Trixie has been turned into a parody of her original character. All she does is purse her lips while her eyes either water or pop out slightly.

I suppose it was a bit of an emergency as the baby had to go straight to hospital and they wanted him baptised before he left the caravan.

That party was brilliant 😂 Timothy is funny drunk. I wondered who was looking after the kids though, did Mrs Higgins just move in?

The HK stuff all seemed pointless, it was obvious the Turners would end up taking another baby home though 🙄 poor kid. The last thing his mother said to them was keep him warm so they take him out in the snow without a hat on in the middle of the night 🙄

Dr Turners acting seems to get worse which is pretty impressive since it was terrible to start with.

Did feel a bit sorry for sister Monica Joan that no one gave a shit that she hadn’t come home 🤦‍♀️

FredaMountfitchet · 27/12/2025 22:41

Rubbish and silly .
Don't think I’ll bother with new series .

Mrs Jenkins? I cried so much when I read that in the book and then again on TV. Properly heartbreaking.

It's probably just as well she didn't come home given what was going on. She'd have have had a heart attack and died on the spot.

I can just imagine Sister MJ, the young Nun, and Trixie arriving home during the Drag routine.

I watched that episode last night on Netflix. Beautifully acted and so compelling.

I've just thought, there was quite a big deal made about Cyril and good girlfriend whose name escapes me spending the night together. Do we think Pastor Cyril may have been improper after all and we'll see a pregnancy out of wedlock storyline?

I wondered this, I said to DD I could see this as a future storyline!

They've just done Nancy having a second baby out of wedlock (even if she didn't marry soon after)

eggandonion · 28/12/2025 22:47

I knew a woman who had a breech birth at home about 1993 while her toddler slept next door. The domiciliary team had two midwifery sisters who would have trained in the sixties.
Apart from one woman I know whose GP delivered her baby in his surgery about 1980 all babies I have ever known were hospital deliveries.

Tim is now a bit of a live wire. Carry On Timothy!

treacledan71 · 28/12/2025 23:18

Who was looking aftër Trixie's stepson then whilst she was working. Are they living at her mother in laws? I liked it Timonthy looked a bit trendier and he cldnt cope with the kids. Bit more normal.

bizzey · 29/12/2025 07:08

How did they get the little brother back without a passport ?
Did the Embassy sort it out ?

InMySpareTime · 29/12/2025 07:31

I think there was some sort of visa waiver system for travel for emergency medical treatment.

HarlotOTara · 29/12/2025 07:47

What a load of shite, I don’t know why I still watch this but I do, just so mawkish. I did predict anencephaly - the big eyes did it. I would make a good BBC TV medic.

I was also a child in the 70s and the wine glasses were wrong

Our next door neighbour had a home birth two days after she moved in in 1962. I had a colleague who was very squeamish about childbirth but went on to give birth at home due to very quick labour. I know another woman who gave birth at home attended by her 8 year old because her husband had gone next door to fetch the neighbour to look after the younger children. My daughter had a home birth for one of her children.
