The Christmas special of call the midwife is on bbc 1 in 2 parts again. The first part is on at 20:15 on Christmas day and the second part is on at 20:30 on boxing day. I am not a fan of the Christmas special been in 2 parts. I wonder how doctor Turner and his simpering wife will save the world.

just rewatching this weeks episode as my baby is (finally) napping - I’ve just noticed nurse Crane mentions the war and working around that time. I know she was a veteran nurse/ midwife when she arrived at NH and now I’m wondering if she will be mentioned / featured in the WW2 prequel…? I know it will largely focus on NH and poplar in the war but food for thought!

Needmorelego · 15/01/2026 16:15

@PumpkinSpice24 I think she was up north during the war.
Other than the nuns the only characters who could be in it are possibly Violet and Fred (although he was away fighting?).
Val (one of the midwives from a few years ago) was a child who grew up in the area during the war so she could pop up.
The thing with the Sisters is really during WW2 they wouldn't look much different to how they were in Season 1 so it will be strange to have them played by younger actresses.

I do hope that she is mentioned in the prequel. She is my favourite character.

Ah I forgot about Val that’s a good shout actually - I hope she pops up! I know she was Leeds based in the war but did wonder if she’d get a nod, I’m just excited to see sister evangeline back she was my fav 🤣 I miss her no nonsense attitude - although I do like nurse crane for this too

PumpkinSpice24 · 15/01/2026 16:22

Also @Needmorelegothe only one I can think of looking different would maybe be SMJ…?

I just double checked when Season 1 was set - it's 1957 so actually 18 years after the start of the War. A bit longer before than I thought. I suppose the Sisters would have looked quite younger 18 years before.
I was thinking about it the other day about who could play Sister Monica Joan.
The actress played Alex Kingston's mum in ER so maybe she could be the one 🤔

NimbleHiker · 15/01/2026 16:40

As long as they don't find a way to bring doctor Turner in to it. I know that he was away during the war. I bet that the surgery will be run by doctor Turner's dad during the prequal.

I haven't decided yet. To be honest i am crap at remembering the names of actors anyway.

Whichever McGann who is Dr Turner can play current dr Turners dad.

I agree. She is by far my favorite. I think they could take a few liberties with some of the back stories mentioned in the original. Or at least have Nurse Crane pop in for a visit/consultation/whatever.

He said his dad ran an iron mongers in Liverpool so doubt he’s in it

Next year I assume.
I don't think it's even started being filmed yet.

That's ok I thought I was missing something. Thanks.

I caught an old episode of 'Heartbeat' last night and the actress who plays Sr. Monica Joan was in it. I recognized her voice before I recognized her face. It was strange seeing her wearing make up.

bizzey · 15/01/2026 19:45

Dr T gets around !
He is on the One Show at the moment !

Anything is possible with call the midwife. I have just got use to it revolving around doctor Turner.

I was 10 when we went decimal..
There was a weekly radio programme at school to help us. Most of us kids got it pretty quickly, it was the older folk who struggled.
15 years later my parents were still complaining that all the prices went up with decimalisation. "Three shillings for a loaf of bread? Outrageous!!" 🤣🤣🤣

I was eight. Perhaps we were listening to the same radio programme.
It had a song in it that went (to the tune of the 12 Days of Christmas):

"On the 15th of February 1971
There's going to be...
Decimal currency...
With a hundred pennies in a pound"

Am always thrilled when the decimalisation date question comes up on quiz shows!

I suspect sister Veronica / Beryl might be a repeat of sister Bernadette/ shelagh turner storyline, could see that coming either how she’s been scripted recently with children .

also is it just me or has Trixies accent got very plummy the last few seasons..?!

I think that her accent has got plummy too.

I’m glad it’s not just me! Looking forward to tonight’s episode but hope there isn’t too much plummy accent as it drives me nuts 😅

I first saw her in The Jewel in the Crown.

Judy Parfitt was also in the (whisper it, I've seen it on YouTube) Highly Controversial (ahem) itv drama Death of A Princess with fleeting CTM cast member Paul Copley (Leonard in the Archers nowadays).

RampantIvy · 18/01/2026 16:28

DD is rewatching CTM from the start. She said tht Shelagh was less irritating as a nun and that the doctor's acting has got worse.

It's got SO MUCH worse. He never used to do the chin-tucked-in-and-gurn face.
