I assume a second series might be a bit better because contestants will know to look out for cryptic clues.

The ending was attempting to be like Race Across The World, I guess. The music was very similar.

I wasn't a Judith fan either. Josh thought she was clever simply because of her job. No one ever really seemed to appreciate that Saskia was pretty savvy. Judith was terrible at every challenge apart from the one in Venice.

They should have had the suitcase on the table for all of them - with or without the money in

Just like the signing in book in Race Across the World

Well, first BBC thing we have watched for awhile. Against the thread grain we liked Saskia and Josh and found Judith a drip. Is the park/statues challenge alll she kept saying was “I must do well in this” did not see her pick up her feet and run.
coil not believe she was so poor at the bag/equation challenge, we worried for future nuclear accidents.

I think the editing was rough on some. As it ended we were saying we don’t like Judith bet she’ll win. She had no reason too. Poor at challenges pretty much all the way through. Saskia at least had done some homework and Josh, if I could fly a plane I’d have an ego. 😜

Josh, if I could fly a plane I’d have an ego.

I know plenty people who can fly planes. None of them have egos like that. In fact one person I knew could fly but not drive!

There was obviously some production management going on with the ending and how it was presented. All three of them seemingly went to the same location to plot their co-ordinates on the map, but despite there being three minutes only between them at the end, they didn’t overlap there. And, having been to the Spanish Steps I also know that when you get to the top of them there is a road, then a church on the other side of the road. No big park or villa - you’d have to go a bit down the road to get to a location where they could have filmed the ending.

Being on the BBC* though you can have faith that it happened as presented, even if not exactly as shown. So, everything would have happened at the times they said. Maybe each of them had to check in with the production team at the top of the steps who verified their time and finishing position, and then held each of them separately before ushering them off to film the ending with Rob down the road? Hopefully Richard Osman will talk about how it was all done on his podcast - he is good at covering issues like that!

(*For example the BBC makes it clear that contestants in Traitors don’t stay at the Castle, as that would be misleading. The American version has no issue with suggesting they all stay there! And all the shots of Traitors walking menacingly to the Tower etc are filmed after the game is over, and just edited into the programme)

You'll be telling me the Sunday Strictly episodes are filmed on Saturday next!

I think they were timed at each task and then when doing the X - the stopwatch stopped when they told the driver to go to the Spanish Steps. The running up the steps was just for the drama

That would also make sense in the event that the finalists hadn't been so evenly matched physically. As it happened all three were in their 20s, but they must've been prepared for the event that say, Daren, was in it. Don't think they'd risk him collapsing trying to race after a man half his age up loads of steps!

crumblingschools · 29/08/2025 08:24

I couldn’t work out how you make an X with only 3 co-ordinates, although I suppose if you go with symmetry you work out where the 4th one would be.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2025 08:35

Something was edited out. I wonder if a contestant made a decision afterwards that they didn't want something shown.

ChompandaGrazia · 29/08/2025 08:35

Wasn’t there a pin already in the map? Or there might have been a challenge that they didn’t show, but then there would be a returning player too many at the end.

I do think that there was a little bit of stopwatch use or something at the bottom of the steps. When they were stood on the balcony the sun was going down but I don’t think it looked like that when they got to the bottom.
My guess is that they were actually staggered in the race and it was timed. When they got to the top of the steps they were held by the production crew, but apart from each other. Judith went it and found out she had won, then they let Josh in, then Saskia. Otherwise they would all see each other climbing the steps.

I don’t think it was a fix. It’s a huge amount of money and they couldn’t risk fixing that.

crumblingschools · 29/08/2025 08:39

I think the climbing steps bit at the end was staggered. Also if one was caught up in traffic it wouldn’t be fair. So the time they took to do the challenges was added up.

Agreed, otherwise they would have likely all ran into each other at the map task! It makes sense to have timed it.

And you’ve got the added ‘danger’ of filming in a public place like that. Anything could happen, someone could moon the camera or trip someone over, something that means they have to start again or pause.

Also, as has been said, you’ve got the danger of being stuck in traffic etc. I think that they all started off together for the camera but they only timed the tasks rather than the travel. Then when they got to the top of the steps they held them somewhere separately from each other and released them by the time advantage they had. So Judith went in, wait 30 seconds then let Josh in, wait two minutes and let Saskia in.

Watching that clip, you can see the finishing section was clearly edited together. They showed a clip from the program of Judith running up the Spanish Steps, which comprises two different shots. In the first, she’s running up the steps, gold cardie on; and in the second she’s still running up the steps, but her cardie is now off and hung over her crossbody bag!

BestIsWest · 29/08/2025 09:31

Yes, there must have been some element of timing using a stopwatch or something. They could easily have been caught in traffic or something. How would Daren have coped with running up the Spanish Steps if he’d made it to the final? Three twenty somethings could compete against each other but it wouldn’t be fair on someone in their fifties to solve clues quickly then lose at the last minute in a race up 130 steps.

Also there was a panned out shot and if Josh was running as though his life depended on it and 30 seconds behind. He would be very much in shot and he isn’t.

Came here to say exactly that!
Then she was carrying it as she walked into the building to meet Rob B.
You wouldn’t be stopping to tie it on, or to take it off again to carry.

As a pp suggested, I think the clock stopped when they found Destination X on the map and the running through the piazza and up the steps was for dramatic effect.

Enjoyed the series though.

BestIsWest · 29/08/2025 09:35

I did like Judith’s gold cardie very much. Wonder where it’s from.

It would have been deeply unfair if Daren had been there still. He clearly struggled to move at speed. Imagine if it had been him vs Nick or Josh. They would have gone bounding up the steps quicker than him without even breaking a sweat.

LIZS · 29/08/2025 09:51

Presumably the three map locations were positioned so as to be similar distance from the steps, but traffic is so unpredictable they could easily have been waylaid. When they panned out from the x terrace it didn’t look in the same place!

Good point.

Here is a 3D view of the Spanish steps and I can’t see the balcony. Hopefully someone who has been will locate it soon.

ChompandaGrazia · 29/08/2025 10:05

Tiny bit of research.

This is the building they went into.
It is not at the top of the Spanish Steps. It is Casina Valadier which according to Google maps is an 11 minute walk away.

So, I’m guessing that they ran to the top of the steps, which was filmed a couple of times due to the cardigan changing, then taken onto the building and had to run again from there.

Maybe the fourth location was the place they were taken to in order to put the pins in the map (and presumably also staggered)? Making that the final "task"? But Rob definitely said there were four tasks leading to four sets of coordinates, so...🤔

SwedishEdith · 29/08/2025 10:32

I'd like an analysis of how they performed for each challenge. Judith won the Venice challenge. Josh had two golden tickets, needed both because he hadn't paid attention to the numbers (unlike Judith) and didn't know/couldn't work out the Audrey H one. So Judith winning with no golden tickets makes her win even clearer.

All of them, other than Dawn and Nick, seemed to suffer from a lack of poor general and geographical knowledge. Judith did start to catch on in the south of France recognising it was hot. I think her open modesty self doubt will have been emphasised in the editing to make her look less Machiavellian and more sympathetic for the viewer. She came across as a lovely person.

NCTDN · 29/08/2025 10:40

How did they all get the one with the ice blocks correct? None of them seemed to have a clue about it.

champagnetrial · 29/08/2025 10:52

I think they must surely have had some extra hints in that final challenge. Imagine if they'd all failed (like the guessing photos in Monaco). They needed all three to run up those steps for the ending.

Kreepture · 29/08/2025 11:00

The Spanish Steps were used because it's where the meeting between Audrey Hepburn and her male counterpart first happens in Roman Holiday.

Essentially, if they'd paid attention, and knew the movie that kept being referenced, they might have guessed that the Spanish Steps were important and not needed to do the tasks.
