New series starting next week - really looking forward to it. The teams are travelling in Asia, but I can't find information about the couples yet. Wednesday nights sorted!

Still harsh to judge someone for not working. Just my opinion, but she prioritized other things in life and it worked for them as a family.

Stellaris22 · 25/04/2025 07:49

It’s more that she was talking about how hard her life is about managing the house and cleaning. The rest of us do that on top of working!

Yes. And, assuming she wasn't sold into slavery, she had a choice about that. Why did she do it all and not involve the rest of the family?

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 08:28

I would imagine that as she was the one at home , she was happy to do it all. It’s only a guess though , but that’s how it normally pans out.
it clearly worked for them and her choices.

Except she now seems to feel she missed out so maybe not such a good choice.

I also believe it's good for children to be involved in cooking and household tasks from an early age to prepare them for life. MN is full of mummy's boy husbands who don't pull their weight in the home.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 08:45

No, but she may have lost her confidence to get back to work or something else happened
might find out more as time goes on !

I did say more information might come out to change my mind but on the basis of this episode I haven't taken to them. Just not my kind of people I suppose and I'm not the only one. I'm prepared to change my mind - I revised my opinion of the brothers in the course of the programme.

Wolfcub · 25/04/2025 08:49

Finally caught up on the first episode last night. The divorced couple, the older brothers and the young sisters are my favourites so far.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 08:55

The divorced couple seem lovely !

Madcats · 25/04/2025 09:01

I’ve travelled a fair bit, but I know I would really really really struggle to go anywhere without a smartphone!

I tried to learn Mandarin at an evening class; I was pretty hopeless so am impressed with the lass from Sussex.

Stellaris22 · 25/04/2025 09:06

It would be nice if the Mum talks more about her choice, there’s a difference between SAHM and house wife. It just seemed like she wanted sympathy for being a house wife and how it’s hard to manage a house, animals and cleaning. Women can do that and work, she’s clearly incredibly privileged.

It’ll be interesting with the budget and language barriers, I’m hoping there’ll be more jobs taken.

About three hours between first and second, I think. The first signature definitely said "5 something" and the second "8 something".

I've noticed they often edit it to look like they're head to head, but there's actually quite a sizeable gap.

Yes, it was three hours. I rewound to check! It annoys me slightly that they build up this big tension - who'll be first??? - then you realise they were hours apart.

Btw the young Welsh couple haven’t even made it out of their teens - 18 (him) and 19 (her) and they’ve been together for ……..four and a half years!

Caroline said 'I don't actually work' - not 'I've never worked in my life'. So I don’t think we know at this point what her story is; maybe she has, maybe she hasn’t. I’m sure it’ll come out in due course.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 10:03

No, I agree that Thomas didn’t come across well. Condescending and a bit ‘ done this already ‘ when he probably did it the much easier way and can could use a phone ( of course) and had more money.
I think his mum will surprise him though.
Still, it’s only episode one, I generally end up disliking all of them by the end ! Lol

it is a fasinating programme though.

FrogsLoveRain · 24/04/2025 21:12

Are you thinking of the lovely mum in the mum/son team that were in series 2 which was through South America.

They left before the end due to the mum's health.

She had a wheely case (and was lovely).

They were low on funds so couldn't finish the final leg. So they just stopped stressing about it and chilled out with their final bit of cash.

Mum was in remission from cancer, and son was autistic I think, but they didn't stop because of her health, if anything they had to spend more along the way to keep him on an even keel.

Stellaris22 · 25/04/2025 10:59

Am I the only one looking at the brothers massive bag and thinking it’s a hindrance?

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 11:05

Scott mills made a comment on his show that they were not allowed a wheelie case ! I’m surprised they have let him have one , but might be a reason for it ?
can’t remember what others have had before , mostly back packs I think ?
it seems a hindrance.

MrsPeterHarris · 25/04/2025 11:30

Presumably they can’t say no to a wheely case though if someone isn’t able to carry a rucksack ss that would he discriminatory? Agree it will be a hindrance but they don’t generally have to run until the end when we’ve seen them ditch their backpacks in the past, so assume he’ll be fine!

drivinmecrazy · 25/04/2025 11:41

I’m amazed at the vitriol shown to to the mother and son.
I can totally relate to them.
Ive ‘never worked’ for a majority of my adult life , but I did work for a significant period before we had children.

it was a decision we made that I would be a SAHM because it worked best for our family.

doesn’t mean my life before DC was meaningless or irrelevant.

when I first joined MN there were alot of us.

society changes and evolves.

doesn’t make any of us less or more.

I’ve never had to juggle childcare and a job. Doesn’t make me less than or more than.

I can totally relate to the mother and son.
he’s never seen his mother through any other lense.

I think they will resonate with many people

I wouldn't class any of it as vitriol and nobody has said that her life was meaningless. I just don't relate to her at all.

Haggisfish3 · 25/04/2025 11:44

The son said in his bit to video that people had always underestimated his mum and he was looking forward to showing what she could do.

And I'm sure she will surprise him. It's a shame she didn't get to do that earlier.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 12:04

Now is the mums time to shine ( I can’t recall her actual name , sorry ) The producers know which dynamics that want for this show and this couple ticked that particular box I think. Be interesting to see how it pans out especially for the sisters too who were living apart for seven years and missed out on a lot of years together.

Never said her life was meaningless.

Just questioned her attempt to get sympathy for being a housewife and how ‘cleaning is hard’. The rest of us work and clean.

Haha that kiss makes a lot more sense now !! I wondered why no one else had mentioned it BlushBlush
i need to pay more attention when watching

When they were shown walking holding hands I was abit 😲 as my first thought was that they were brother and sister.
Enjoyed it,the brothers accommodation was terrible I would have cried(which is why I could never do this )

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2025 12:21

I liked the younger couple. She was concerned about his sugar levels and they do seem really happy.
They also have youth and energy on their side too, this show is gruelling and they have less money as well this time around ( so I read )

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/04/2025 13:09

I don't know this for certain, but I'm guessing the spending money has been reduced because things cost less in the countries they're visiting this time?
