New series starting next week - really looking forward to it. The teams are travelling in Asia, but I can't find information about the couples yet. Wednesday nights sorted!

Catchup

PuppyMonkey · 24/04/2025 07:18

Why don’t you like the brothers @boatyardblues - did I miss something they did? I thought them having a fit of the giggles in that terrible room was the best bit of the show last night.

The only ones I wasn’t really keen on was the mum and son, but perhaps their story will change. He just seemed like an annoying wet blanket with outrageous eyebrows.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 23/04/2025 22:28

Evening all.

I wonder what the mother and son's back story is. She seems quite game.

Having read their Q&A on the BBC website, they both seem obsessed with Tom being hungry and/or overtired, much like a toddler...

From their brief introduction in the programme. She's spent her life so far cleaning up after her family and he's done whatever he liked. He's done a lot of travelling and thinks he knows it all but I'm sure that was with his phone and a lot of money. He got my back up straight away.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/04/2025 07:22

although i think the teams have been specifically put together with the hope of some sparks!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/04/2025 07:23

the last time there was a couple who had a wheely bag instead of a ruck sack, they left early, due to family health i think

Arrivederla · 24/04/2025 07:23

Not over keen on the mother and son, and the older of the two sisters seems rather controlling...otherwise liking all the couples so far.

Really enjoying the amazing views and scenery! I went to the Great Wall 30 years ago and it was incredibly crowded then, so amazed that they managed to get such brilliant shots of it.

Looking forward to next week's episode.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/04/2025 07:24

I thought the brothers might have been annoying at first but I liked their attitude and the way they coped with that horrible room.

That was about 3 series ago wasn't it?!

i am not sure,
there is just one series i never saw, or two, canada and perhaps the first one

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/04/2025 07:28

I think it was the first one that the couple left due to family reasons but not before trying some dirty tricks with a hotel - telling the owners not to let other participants stay. I could be wrong.

second one perhaps, with the father and son and the father got into a strop at not winning

but i watched them in the wrong order so may be wrong

Maybe the second one then. I watched them all on iplayer after last year's.

I’m pretty sure that was the first ever season where they started at the Greenwich observatory. I’m late to RATW and watched all previous seasons back to back last year, so it’s fresher in my memory.

Someone asked why I don’t like the brothers. It’s mainly the accountant brother because he clearly looks down on his brother and is trying to control everything (or at least it’s being edited that way). That said, he has the greatest potential for enlightenment as I’m sure circumstance will shift the dynamic and he’ll learn how capable and rounded his overlooked brother is.

Liquorandvinegar · 24/04/2025 08:30

My Wednesday night was sorted by my boiler going kaput! All in hand. Going to catch up on the episode and the thread this evening. 🙂

I'm enjoying it so far. My favourite couples so far are Gaz and Yin and the young couple. Found the son and the richer brother a bit annoying

whoaskedyou · 24/04/2025 08:44

I thought it was funny when the one brother said his wife had told him not to be too pushy then he absolutely dominated his brother in the decision as to where to head for. I think they're quite different personalities. Nice that they're getting to bond more in their 60s.

LoveTKO · 24/04/2025 08:54

I was laughing my head off at the brothers in that awful room, and the key in the door….

iwantavuvezela · 24/04/2025 09:27

Off to a good start, the pairings seem good (probably like the mother son the least for now, but know that can change) Loving the brothers, especially the scene where they were staying in that rather shabby accommodation and loved how they laughed when they say the key in the door (who would rob us) and when they noticed the bed was just a board on bricks and said well it is bed and board! Sisters seem a good pairing as well as the exes.

CrushingOnRubies · 24/04/2025 09:28

love RATW!

really want to explore China now.

warming to Yin & Gaz the most. Although like the brothers.

would have done the inland route .

The checkpoint village looked incredible

Istgisforreal · 24/04/2025 09:40

Definitely the bros are best, reaction to the awful accommodation was brilliant!

Stunned by how fab China looks, great for their tourism!

Fatrosrhun · 24/04/2025 11:56

They were very lucky in getting clear days in the cities. I’ve been to Shanghai many times and never seen the sky!

My parents had a really amicable split too. They spent £100 on the divorce, shared everything and kept helping each other as friends for 20 years until my dad died. People used to say why did they split up, even I did sometimes, but I’d they spent more than a couple of days together they’d start bickering a bit and I’d remember! I wonder if this might happen on the race, particularly if things go wrong?!

ChompandaGrazia · 24/04/2025 12:24

LucieChardon · 23/04/2025 23:19

@ChompandaGrazia
I’m amazed that she can’t speak any Mandarin. Surely she would have leaned from her parents or other family.

What's with the amazement?!?

Yin is early 50s, she or certainly her parents would have been 1st generation immigrants. She talks about growing up, meeting Gaz in the mid 80s. Going from that background, my guess would be that her parents are Cantonese speakers, who emigrated from HK. She may have grown up here hearing Cantonese, and no Mandarin at all which would have been entirely normal.

China is a big country, although Mandarin is standard, there are hundreds of Chinese languages, never mind regional accents.

I'm liking all the pairings so far, found the brothers really touching.

Edited

Ah good point. It was the way she said it made it sound like she was from a mandarin speaking family but just hadn’t learned any. With family who were first generation I wouldn’t expect English to be spoken at home.

Tomatotater · 24/04/2025 12:30

boatyardblues · 23/04/2025 23:37

You must be watching a different programme to me. I wanted them to get on the wrong train to Mongolia and never catch the others up. 😆

I like the sisters but feel they have an unexpected advantage with Letitia’s Mandarin skills. Do the producers allow ringers?

It was funny when she was on the bus and said 'I learnt a bit of Mandarin, wish Id kept it up' then proceeded to have a full conversation with the woman on the bus in Mandarin!

placemats · 24/04/2025 14:33

I'm going to watch it again because I was tired and didn't absorb it all in. The mother looks like Patsy Palmer off East Enders - albeit a bit more posh. I like her and well all of them really. Loved the scenery ❤️ and the white pomegranate picking - what a lovely family.

NCTDN · 24/04/2025 16:10

I enjoyed that. Did anyone else think it was a bit weird though when the brother and sister arrived at the first checkpoint, and when saying well done, he gave her a kiss on the lips?
