Anyone starting this today? All 6 episodes released today.
It's with Keira Knightley, Ben Wishaw and Sarah Lancashire - spy thriller.

I've started the first episode but had to stop and may go back to it tomorrow.

I liked is as an easy to watch Christmassy series but there were so many plot holes/ errors. Did the assassin guy really just leave a guitar case full of guns in the street? Why didn’t Wallace question where she was all day before the affair was suggested?

In the last episode, I was screaming at the TV, “go home to your children, it’s Christmas Eve ffs!!”. Why would you hang around watching a carol service and then go and sit on the bench all night when your supposedly beloved twins were waiting for you on Christmas Eve? If it was me, DH would have filed a missing persons report!

I enjoyed it. Mindless escapism and London looked lovely.

However was totally distracted by Keira's 'twins'. I did hear right? They were meant to be twins? The girl looked about 3 years older than the boy?

Sorry to bang on about it but the twins thing really annoyed me. If they were real twins so be it. But I checked the credits and the 'twins' aren't even related so you would have thought you would get 2 children vaguely similar to play twins. It didn't add anything to the story either unless they just wanted KK to have the stereotypical nuclear family.

On episode 5 and thoroughly enjoying it so far. It’s exciting, witty, well paced and the performances by all are great.

Can you imagine the BBC or ITV doing something as well crafted as this?

Sorry, I'm a bit late in replying to this but I've only just come across Black Doves and this thread.

"Can you imagine the BBC or ITV doing something as well crafted as this?"

I can, actually. I wasn't too impressed with the trailer for Black Doves but then I saw that it was written by Joe Barton. Amongst other things he wrote the 2019 BBC series Giri/Haji which is set in Britain and Japan.

It's currently on Netflix

This was equally well done.

Trailer:

Watch Giri / Haji | Netflix

Family duty sends a lawman to London to look for his mob-assassin brother as a yakuza war threatens to engulf Tokyo. Trust is even tougher to find.

MistletoeRegrets · 10/12/2024 13:46

Guru / Haji was in a completely different league!

MisterPNumber23 · 10/12/2024 14:24

Giri/Haji was absolutely fantastic.

MistletoeRegrets · 10/12/2024 14:44

(Ha! My phone obviously decided to re-invent it!)

I'm enjoying it but get annoyed when things don't make sense -- she guns someone down on a street in London and there are no people around wondering what's going on, not even a twitching curtain? A guy blows someone's brains out in a restaurant, walks casually to his car, sits there, makes a phone call and no one comes out of the restaurant in all that time, etc.

I was screaming at the tv ‘just get the hell out of there!’

It was also very weird how that lady would always call Sam exactly after he had killed the target to check if it was done.

BESTAUNTB · 10/12/2024 18:22

Interesting and compelling but yep - definitely need to suspend disbelief when folk are getting gunned down in busy London with no one noticing and then parking outside the American Embassy and in other busy places.

CrossPurposes · 10/12/2024 19:11

I have never seen a London so underpopulated since covid. The south bank is never that quiet.

My favourite weird bit was Helen wandering round a Christmas party watching somebody getting tortured and murdered on her mobile.

sweatervest · 10/12/2024 19:32

absolute escapism and i loved it.
ben wishaw oooooooooooooooooooooooozes charisma/similar and i hope they do a second series.

CrossPurposes · 10/12/2024 19:35

Also can anyone else see the resemblance between bearded Ben Whishaw and bearded Peter Dinklage?

I thought it was Kit Harrington on the advert.

SabrinaToolmaker · 10/12/2024 20:17

I think KK is less annoying than usual in this. And props to her for having no Botox or fillers and her/Helen with visible grey hairs.

I loved BW’s call to Vanessa. “The threat’s from… er, Al-Qaeda?” Grin

BlackChunkyBoots · 10/12/2024 20:50

I love the female assassins and the Gangster boss, she's hilarious but has good insight too. She can see Sam so clearly. Keira is good and funny too. Wallace is blind as bat, poor love.

It's an absolute load of escapist nonsense, not set in the "real world". I had a shooting near my flat a couple of years ago and believe me, everyone who lived here knew about it. I'm sure there are people who clean up the aftermath but people would know something big has gone on.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 08/12/2024 00:48

I have watched all episodes.

Look away now if you haven’t as my questions might act as spoilers.

  1. Who sent the fake police to Jason’s flat? Who were they working for at that point and why was that person after Jason?
  2. How did Helen know there would be a hard drive hidden behind the picture?
  3. How did blonde Trigger Girl suddenly miraculously recover from gunshot wound?
  4. How did Helen explain to Wallace that some man working in insurance was unexpectedly coming for Christmas Dinner?
  5. Who thought it a good idea that BW’s hairdo would get bigger and bigger til his head looked like one of those wobbly head figures with a massive head and tiny body?

I did enjoy it, particularly once I realised it was meant to be highly cartoonic with funny moments.

Lots of material for a folllow up. Who did SY name? Who is the woman sitting on Reed’s sofa on Xmas day? Will Lenny keep her word? Why will the PM resign (not for his health) etc.

Haven't read the full thread but sorry why did the guy in the kitchen allow her to get close and get himself killed. Lost interest then.

Violetparis · 10/12/2024 22:46

Thought this was ok but ridiculous. Don't get the love for BW, found him stilted. Much prefer the Jackal.

HenryV111 · 10/12/2024 23:02

Ok, I have deliberately not read all the thread in case of spoilers as only on episode 2. But does anyone’s think that Keira Knightley looks like Catherine , princess of Wales? I am not much of a royal watcher, but I keep glimpsing her!!

Phase2 · 10/12/2024 23:03

@HenryV111 yes so funny I thought that earlier. Its the hair and coats silhouette

BESTAUNTB · 10/12/2024 23:37

I loved the tiny dark-haired boss with the glasses, and the Welsh and Irish women. Hope all three reappear in S2.

The auburn-haired gangster played Prince Harry in the Crown. I’d been struggling to place him.

Good to see Tracey Ullman again. She doesn’t change much.

Good, not just me then!

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2024 04:55

Lenny the older gangster lady was fab.
KK was good as was BW
It had a glossy feel to it all , even if it was totally far fetched !

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2024 04:56

I'd love Tracey Ullman to do Strictly.
Always been a fan of hers

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2024 05:04

The two girl assassins and Lenny the old one need their own spin off series !

Yes, I've been saying this to DP. I've never noticed it before but occasionally there's a striking resemblance.

That other boss showed so much personality in fewer scenes than Sarah Lancashire.

Why hire such a talented actor to play a role that anyone could play? She was just standing in different places staring into the distance delivering lines with no tone/nuance whatsoever.
