Anyone starting this today? All 6 episodes released today.
It's with Keira Knightley, Ben Wishaw and Sarah Lancashire - spy thriller.

I've started the first episode but had to stop and may go back to it tomorrow.

OP posts:

We just finished watching it. We really enjoyed it. Just waiting for jackal to drop all the episodes then we will be watching that. I like KK and Ben Wishaw so has been looking forward to it since the trailer dropped.

I enjoyed it. Mindless escapism and London looked lovely.

However was totally distracted by Keira's 'twins'. I did hear right? They were meant to be twins? The girl looked about 3 years older than the boy?

My Son was often taken as the twin brother of my youngest daughter who was two-and-a -half years younger than him when they were young. It all depends on the genes. If they are not identical twins, the same applies.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 08/12/2024 00:48

I have watched all episodes.

Look away now if you haven’t as my questions might act as spoilers.

  1. Who sent the fake police to Jason’s flat? Who were they working for at that point and why was that person after Jason?
  2. How did Helen know there would be a hard drive hidden behind the picture?
  3. How did blonde Trigger Girl suddenly miraculously recover from gunshot wound?
  4. How did Helen explain to Wallace that some man working in insurance was unexpectedly coming for Christmas Dinner?
  5. Who thought it a good idea that BW’s hairdo would get bigger and bigger til his head looked like one of those wobbly head figures with a massive head and tiny body?

I did enjoy it, particularly once I realised it was meant to be highly cartoonic with funny moments.

Lots of material for a folllow up. Who did SY name? Who is the woman sitting on Reed’s sofa on Xmas day? Will Lenny keep her word? Why will the PM resign (not for his health) etc.

paranoidnamechanger · 08/12/2024 07:39

I loved it all and thought it was the most deliciously entertaining show I’ve seen for ages - I wasn’t bored at any point, which is unusual. I preferred it to Slow Horses, which felt increasingly samey, story-wise.

I was delighted to read yesterday that Netflix have renewed it for a second season.

JoJothegerbil · 08/12/2024 08:20

We binged the whole lot on Friday. Loved it. It’s not usual that DH and I will watch a series together but we were both hooked. Can’t wait for series 2.

Sayoonara · 08/12/2024 08:34

@ClicketyClickPlusOne I was boggling a bit at the Christmas dinner with the random 'insurance man' guest. Does her husband have no curiosity whatsoever? I thought she was going to make up something like he was a cousin.

I was also curious that Helen's step-sister never got featured again, having given her back story. I thought she was going to get released from prison and come after Helen for letting her take the fall for their father/ step-father's death.

I really enjoyed it overall, more so than Slow Horses.

MistletoeRegrets · 08/12/2024 08:45

Oh, they’ve definitely left some loose ends for the second season. That remark about ‘Taking the children’ - and who it was said to. And the unseen sister …

The one thing I didn’t find ridiculous was someone inviting a friend / colleague to Christmas lunch at the last moment. Would have been perfectly normal in our household.Grin

I wonder which season they’ve chosen to overdress next time. Easter? Halloween?

CountTo10 · 08/12/2024 08:45

@StrikeForever But presumably your children didn’t look like there was nearly 3 years apart? I also noticed the girl was the only one who had any solo lines which again lead me to think she was the older of the two.

It also seemed odd that they had a seemingly full-time nanny despite the fact KK didn't ostensibly didn't work at all. Husband seemed oblivious that she was constantly 'out' and coming back at strange times with no real reason.

1.i thought it was the Clark family?
2 her spy training /instinct?
3 I have the same question!
4 I thought she told him he was a friend and not interested in women.
5 don’t know.

re the extra questions:
SY called the PM on the video which meant that the govt knew who had killed the Chinese ambassador but seemed to be happy to have things pointed at CIA to avoid questions about how they are involved with a crime family.
woman sitting in Reed’s sofa was KK’s nanny.
PM will resign because he was involved with the Clark family.

i think lol

MistletoeRegrets · 08/12/2024 11:36

How did Helen know there would be a hard drive hidden behind the picture?

When she blew out her smoke it drifted towards the picture - because there was a vacuum behind it. She noticed that.

WhereAreWeNow · 08/12/2024 11:38

I've only seen episode 1 and liked it. DH not keen.
It's silly but it's meant to be.
KK is beautiful and I think acts v well in it.
Ben W is brilliant, as always.
The shots of London are lovely.
The Christmas theme is nice.
And I enjoy seeing inside the ludicrously flash houses.
Daft but fun.

Jewel1968 · 08/12/2024 16:29

Very silly plot with lots of holes but I don't think it was meant to be taken too seriously. I enjoyed the black humour and the idea that nobody really knows anybody. Thought the actors were good.

An enjoyable dark romp.

MistletoeRegrets · 08/12/2024 16:53

The contrast between the ferocity of the dainty young ladies and the timidity of Michael was a great joke.

But beyond that - I’d rather see BW and SL in meatier roles. He was ok, but she was distinctly meh.

Extiainoiapeial · 08/12/2024 17:00

I watched 2 episodes then honestly couldn't stomach it any more. It just wasn't grabbing me. I really tried.

midlifeattheoasis · 08/12/2024 18:22

IcedPurple · 06/12/2024 17:43

It looks reasonably interesting but for me Keira Knightley ruins everything she's in, so I'll give it a miss.

I feel the same as you about Keira, but you actually forget she usually annoys you in this. She doesn't do that annoying pouty thing which is a bonus

RedRiverShore5 · 08/12/2024 18:25

I tried 3 episodes now and don't want to waste too much time with it so will skip to the end.

Jennyathemall · 08/12/2024 21:50

Thought it was great and a great performance from KK but BW can’t hold a gun properly to save his life. He’s miscast in this.

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2024 05:24

I like the lady mafia boss , she is funny !

Loadsapandas · 09/12/2024 06:38

I normally avoid anything with KK but couldn’t resist SL.

I enjoyed it - an easy funny watch. Some really good characters.

I might rewatch the ending cos initially I thought it was shite but prob fell asleep as didn’t realise (which is common for me).

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 09/12/2024 09:23

Oooh, thank you, I am clearly not spy material myself, not noticing that she noticed the smoke … or recognising the nanny on Reed’s sofa!

I thought that the step sister story was a cover and that she had spent 10 years in prison, hence the not taking the scholarship and the missing 10 years ‘travelling’.

MistletoeRegrets · 09/12/2024 09:40

Interesting …

But how could she have invented a whole human being? (MI5 /MI6 level stuff) Anyone investigating her would have been able to establish whether the step sister actually existed, or not. Fabulous theory though!

ThatIsNotMyNameSoWhyAreYouCallingMeThat · 09/12/2024 10:11

Thought the cinematography was (mostly) stunning and Ben W superb.

There is absolutely no way the Defence Secretary wouldn’t have round the clock at-home security. And the in-car sound of the BMW was completely wrong, which was very distracting.

ThatIsNotMyNameSoWhyAreYouCallingMeThat · 09/12/2024 10:14

Also glad not to be Wham-ageddoned

I thought that that was how they established that she was lying, because they had investigated, and was therefore a ruthless killer, good at lying , and good at living with a new identity - the ideal Black Dove.

But I would need to listen to that exchange again to be sure.

ReScent · 09/12/2024 16:48

Loved it - binged it all on my day off!
