Anyone watching? So far I'm really liking the lead actress.

But they keep talking about a Northern Irish weapon-maker bloke being British. I thought Northern Ireland was part of the UK, but not part of Great Britain? Isn't that why our passports say great Britain AND Northern Ireland? Annoying.

On the upside, I loved it so much when the lead lady said "pre planning? Isn't all planning pre ?!"

OMG I hate all this "pre" business, "pre" ordering etc. It's already in advance! (Probably a thread for the pedants section)

I love the lead actress though.

Yes, Bianca the morphine-denier to a cancer victim unendeared herself to us a little more this episode, right?

There will be consequences from the Jackal pissing on his doorstep, I imagine. Nuria grew on me a tad this episode.

Karmaisagod · 06/12/2024 17:04

Was it casually thrown in that the Home Secretary is in on all of it with the billionaires? Did we know already and I'd missed it?

BustingBaoBun · 06/12/2024 17:35

She was thrown a file at one point I think? but a lot of it was redacted or maybe I'm thinking of another crime thingy!

Karmaisagod · 06/12/2024 17:50

Wasn't he the one who her the file about Duggan?

DuncinToffee · 06/12/2024 17:52

The photo from the file, did the Jackal wear sunglasses?

OrangesCinammonIvy · 06/12/2024 21:17

Discussion with dh tonight, neither of us like bianca. She's a fucking shit mum, generally but also putting her dd in the arms of a killer whose dd she had murdered.
She's cold and ruthless and we don't know why. N
Our jackal on the other hand we have seen kill from a distance in Afghanistan whilst his paid to kill as well comrades murdered for fun and easily covered it up.

He was deeply moved by that.
He's also a crap partner and dad but we just want him to win.
We felt strangely happy he got river guy!!
I felt a bit yucky after being so happy he shot river man.

I want bianca to bugger off and I want to see duggan and his wife try and move on.

Teeh · 06/12/2024 22:55

i loved that episode. But sorry for being such a stupid question, but can anyone explain to me who the guy who was shot actually is?

StrikeForever · 06/12/2024 23:49

DH and I are loving it. The story, production, acting, settings and sound track are all fabulous. I just wish they weren’t slowing eaking-out the second half of the series. Viewers just don’t watch programmes one episode a week any more. It’s bloody frustrating.

Both DH and me ask ourselves why we’re rooting for ‘the jackal’ despite him being the ‘bad guy’.

Foxlover46 · 06/12/2024 23:52

He's the guy who is about to expose all the billionaires so they wanted him shot before it all gets out to the general public.
The brother in law surely will always be a liability now being he knows too much and is a bit of a knob.
I don't think Bianca will kill him , maybe injure him and it will
End on some huge cliffhanger as there will be series 2.

It was, but then she got access to the unredacted version

The developer of River, the programme/project that will dramatically reduce the wealth of billionaires and benefit ordinary people. Despite that I still love the Jackal (the man, not the programme).

Amaranthasweetandfair · 07/12/2024 00:55

I realised this episode I think we are actually supposed to like the River guy when he said he'd give up his billions so young people can have a decent life. Sanctimonious twat 😁 I think we all wanted the Jackal to shoot him!

Karmaisagod · 07/12/2024 06:28

It felt to me like UDC had been made deliberately unlikeable so far, despite his apparently noble intentions. He came across as intense, sanctimonious and egocentric. But in Thursday's episode he made the comment about billionaires giving up their extreme wealth for the sake of young people's futures (I was not clear on how that would work, or how "River" would make it happen - did anyone figure that out?), and suddenly he seemed a little more sympathetic. As soon as I saw that, I thought, "you're dead, mate".

Teeh · 07/12/2024 08:55

Thank you everyone, that makes more sense now. I also thought him unlikeable and was rooting for the jackal! The jackal is so ruthless though, and getting more so with every episode

LOpportunityCestFuckingEnorme · 07/12/2024 13:38

It doesn't help that the actor playing the boyfriend was in something I watched being really weaselly - and also as soon as you see Adam James (foreign sec) on screen these days you know he's going to be a baddie. Some typecasting people!

I think he was in Downton as a weasley character.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 07/12/2024 16:39

@ANagsHead I like that also

Wordau · 07/12/2024 18:19

BustingBaoBun · 06/12/2024 16:27

Love those theories @Wordau

There's another series so I think we can assume Jackal lives!

Oh is there 😂 missed that!

Wordau · 07/12/2024 18:24

khaitai · 06/12/2024 16:39

One thing that's confused me is that Bianca has never seen a picture of Alexander Duggan. But why not? If he was in the army then surely his picture, date of birth, medical records etc would all be available at the touch of a button. So if all this information has disappeared or is being blocked then surely the only conclusion she can draw is that MI6 are protecting him?

This is a very good point. Surely there would be a photo on file and no need for that to be redacted. Why has Bianca not realised this, she just keeps going "hmm something's not right".

Bianca is hugely unlikeable, on purpose. Maybe she dies in the end. Is she in the second series?

BustingBaoBun · 07/12/2024 18:27

Don't know. But it's pretty pointless looking at a photo of him really given his disguises.
Although he was caught out wasn't he, in an apartment when police knocked at the door....

Yes and they also have the identifit, which would at least corroborate the Duggan theory Bianca has.

Wordau · 07/12/2024 18:49

Oh I've just had a other theory! Hope you don't mind me sharing 😜

Jackal promises Nuria this is one last job.

If there's a season 2, that means more jobs (unless he goes to work for govt, but I hate that idea).

So my theory is that Nuria leaves him, or dies, otherwise why else would he stop?

Does he put their child in danger? I can imagine Bianca having no qualms about using the child to get to him. Is this where her increasingly amoral journey is heading?

That smile on his face after he killed UDC shows, IMO, he really enjoys being so good at his job too. I suppose it could be relief at it being his last, but I doubt it. He is willing to go to the most extreme lengths for his job.

Unlike you lot 😂 I didn't want him to kill UDC. I wanted him to realise how wrong it was to kill a "good" person. And also have the jeopardy of missing and what that would mean

I'm not really rooting for the jackal after he killed his entire unit in the army! Surely they weren't all bad?!

BustingBaoBun · 07/12/2024 19:00

I agree @Wordau

Killing that boat person who was just taking him on a trip was 🫨🫨, not forgetting Rasmus.

And also not forgetting the very many others!

I imagine Nuria dies and he changes his priorities somehow, don't know how.

I am wondering if he gets a conscience because of his wife dying and goes just for baddies.... who knows...

LunaNorth · 01/12/2024 02:38

I’m enjoying ER and the high production values, but my God, I wish they’d spent a bit more time on making the story believable - especially the Bianca bits.

She’s like Martin Platt in Corrie - because he was a nurse, every time any character went to hospital, there he was, regardless of the department.

Up to now, Bianca is a firearms expert (although watching with ex-armed responder DH throws that into question), who also does her own grunt work (watching CCTV, ringing around every bag retailer in the UK, etc), who also carries out raids and negotiates (badly) with informants.

Hasn't MI6 got the money for an actual team? And if they haven’t, why entrust the whole operation to someone who has ‘Central Command’ in her phone contacts, and leaves said phone on the dinner table for her kid to read?

Then there’s the home life nonsense. Bianca is meant to be a ruthless operative who will hold a mother’s dead child as leverage, yet she stresses about missing parents’ evenings and moussaka? She wouldn’t give a fuck. I wanted her to point out to her family that she works for fucking MI6 and that’s quite a big deal, so they could back off?

(Also, as an aside, I don’t know a single teenager that would be upset that their mum wasn’t going to parents’ evening. Most would actively rejoice).

Apart from all that, and the fact that in episode 2 Eddie Redmayne inexplicably disguised himself as Catherine Tate’s character Derek (“How very dare you?”) I like it 😀

Edited

I could have written your post - are you me?! 🤣

Thinking exactly the same. Apparently Bianca can is omnipresent and omni-capable at all manner of spy craft which is testing my credulity to the limits. And her whole family set up is just bullshit. Her husband being all grumpy because she can’t make parents evening. Fuck sake, she is apparently holding up the whole of M15 so cut her some slack, yeah?

Also DH and I have been constantly saying how shit the Jackel is at concealing his identity/movements including leaving his bag at the Irish gun maker blokes house and bottles of his wee behind 🫠. And how on earth has he allowed himself to be seen in person by the women who has brokered his services.

But I too am gripped by the whole ludicrous nonsense of it all 🤣

Wordau · 07/12/2024 20:39

It's definitely one of those, don't question it, just enjoy it shows. Utterly ridiculous, questionable hammy acting and badly written in parts, but still fun to watch.
