Is anyone watching?

I'm just halfway through the first episode and was dying to discuss it!

These participants are not what I was expecting at all. They actually sound a lot more interesting than most reality TV fodder.

Just been reading in a newspaper that Cat, Nicole and Ben have all previously been on TV shows.

Freddie is best mates with Adam Frisby and Jamie from In the Style so I don't think he's such a homebody he makes out

Was it Freddie and Cat who both said they go to the gym every day, twice a day? What with that and working full time, there can't be a lot of time left to do anything else.

I might be in the minority here but I find Ben being insistent that Nicole MUST hate Sam a teeny bit controlling. She was explaining to Ben very calmly that she literally doesn’t care about Sam enough to give a shit about anything he says and doesn’t want to waste any head space on him. But that doesn’t seem to be enough for him. He just seems to care about it all a bit too much whereas he should be taking his lead from Nicole.

Just watched the whole thing & completely agree with this. Plus he was desperate to tell her what Sam said about her & she wasn't interested but he kept saying how Sam said not very nice things about her (& even said it in front of his family!). I think he's a massive red flag! (I'm no fan of Sam though either - he was awful).

For some reason, the weddings & in particular the rejections made me very teary! I was glad those weddings didn't happen and yet cried a lot for those who were rejected!

Overall I really enjoyed it! Might watch some of the international series now!

I still cant get over the brass neck of Tom going on about 50/50 all the way while in the next breath expecting ice cream bought for him and his mortgage paid with the expectation she wouldn’t have a claim on it. Maria’s had a lucky escape.

That’s not what I took from him at all.

Maria had the attitude of “what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine.” She wanted to reap the rewards of his successful job, yet at the same time he was in trouble for valuing working hard and getting ahead. She said she was “embarrassed” to pay for something?! He’s the one who had the lucky escape!

Arconialiving · 22/08/2024 22:15

I disagree @agoldcup - he totally wanted her to do it all, pay 50/50 & also do all the child rearing etc. I think she's had a lucky escape but fundamentally they just weren't compatible. As soon as he saw Tash he wasn't interested in Maria. Tash is much more his type.

For the other 5 couples who got engaged, did they also go to Corfu & get married? Or what happened with them??

He didn't say 50/50, he said he didn't understand why he should be expected to pay for everything.
Then when they talked about moving in together, Maria was the one who said she wanted the man to always pay for dates, and then said she wouldn't pay for someone else's mortgage.
I don't recall Tom mentioning any of those things.

What five other couples?

ciaopizza · 23/08/2024 00:26

They only take a certain number of couples on the honeymoon week. The rest of the engaged couples are told their story will no longer be followed and they go home. I wonder how many of those blind engagements continue once they realise they will no longer be on tv!

cantpullthetrigger · 23/08/2024 00:40

Did anyone else watch the weddings and feel that the 'I appreciate you' was some kind on inside joke amongst the contestants?

The way it came up as a phrase so often and the little smiles that came with it. I had wondered whether it was part of the coaching or counselling they had been receiving within three show...

No, that's you projecting. He should have taken the hint when she told him in the pods her dad really looked after her mother, but most people would think that was with love, care, and respect - not saddling the responsibility for all the bills.

Their values were different, and it was smart of him to recognize that.

That's a very American thing to say. Maybe it's doing the rounds on Tiktak.

Steven and Sabrina said that a lot, they were both into gratitude journaling so I assumed it was something to do with that.

Tom just wanted an equal relationship, I didn’t get from him that he wanted her to do all the child rearing, that was what she wanted and he actually said something like “well so do I but…” which I took to mean we’d both like to spend lots of time looking after our children but we also need to work.

Arconialiving · 23/08/2024 08:41

@Twonewcats someone upthread posted a link to an article that said 11 couples actually got engaged on the UK show.

eish · 23/08/2024 09:05

Tom specifically said in the pods that he might like to do some child rearing. I didn’t get red flags from him, I think he realised that they got on well with the every day but their fundamental values were misaligned.

I agree
I wasn’t a fan of Tom. He seems like the type of man who expects a lot from a woman but gives crumbs in return.
Also , I think that he found Maria interesting but was better suited to Tash

SpikeGilesSandwich · 23/08/2024 09:37

I can't see any of these couples lasting tbh. Stephen wanted children and she didn't, that's a massive incompatibility, it's ok to mention adoption lightly and skip over it but I don't think either of them have a clue how intense that process is, same with surrogacy, it's really not that simple!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 23/08/2024 09:38

All in all, this series was pretty boring in my opinion, won't bother watching the next one.

burnoutbabe · 23/08/2024 10:08

its been better than other US series - more serious people, less DRAMA

but also - THEY ARE MAD TO MARRY after a month. So the 5 couples who got engaged and not seen on the show at all are better off. They can just date. they don't need to DUMP THEM AT THE ALTER, when actually they still want to be together, just not marry a stranger.

LoveRosesClimbing · 23/08/2024 10:24

Totally agree. Adoption and surrogacy need so much thought and counselling first. Children from adoption and surrogacy can have trauma and need a lot of support, which was unavailable to them in the past. Back then it was wrongly, much more about the parents needs and not about the child. Lots of secrecy used to be involved.
Parents used to not get any support to think about their own feelings either.

The future kids need to have relationships with all the people involved in making them, wherever possible. If you are successful and do get to have a child by either journey there are lots of potentially tricky adult relationships to negotiate as a parent. Understandably a lot of people with straightforward biological family lives themselves, massively underestimate the complexity of all of that when they first think about it.

LoveRosesClimbing · 23/08/2024 10:27

I had no idea that more couples got engaged than were filmed. I really wonder how they picked the ones that they included?

Yeah, think they followed some then decided to focus on the 6. Shame, I'd prefer more episodes and more couples.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 23/08/2024 16:03

I've not read the thread and I'm assuming this has been said but Jesus Christ Jasmine's mother is an absolute nightmare. I'm just on that episode.

Fair enough not loving the idea of marrying someone after a month or two, but if I was Jasmine I'd be moving to Australia to escape this woman and her interference.

CheeseWisely · 23/08/2024 19:07

Oooh I just accidentally found out something that may explain the surprise (although I don't know who it actually is).

Don't want to spoil anything though!
