Just started watching Eric on Netflix. Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent. Subject matter dark.

Thanks for starting the thread, I'm part way through Episode1.
Some of the reviews I've read say it's Benedict's best performance since Patrick Melrose.

Netaporter · 01/06/2024 04:29

Watched the first episode and loved it. It’s written by Abi Morgan (The Split, The Hour, Iron Lady etc) so a real departure from her usual fare. BC is absolutely awesome in it I thought.

Clawedino · 01/06/2024 07:15

Watched the first episode too.
BC is very good in it.

Fairyliz · 01/06/2024 16:06

Did anyone think his acting was almost too good?
I felt like I was actually watching an American series from the 80’s so it seemed dated and I couldn’t always understand his American accent.

tennissquare · 01/06/2024 18:53

@Fairyliz , I'm watching it with subtitles on, same as with Riley!

SocksAndTheCity · 01/06/2024 18:54

I'm just starting episode 3! Glad to see there's a thread Smile

Floatingvoternolandinsight · 01/06/2024 18:55

Just finished it. Didn't think I would like it but I really enjoyed it. V. Dark.

Tarkan · 01/06/2024 18:58

I watched the whole thing yesterday. I literally put it on not knowing a thing about it other than puppets and Benedict Cumberbatch. Loved it but as PP says, very dark in places.

Did Benedict in it remind anyone else of Hugh Laurie as House? Like you totally forget they're actually English.

DH didn't see the first couple of episodes as he was out but he got totally drawn in to it too.

Pixilicious1 · 01/06/2024 20:16

Watched the whole thing yesterday and today. Want to talk about it but won’t do any spoilers- waiting for you all to finish!

Averagelife · 01/06/2024 20:16

I’ve just finished this - Amazing! Best thing I’ve seen on Netflix for a while.

Definitely worth a watch if you’re undecided , although as PP has said, it is pretty dark.

SocksAndTheCity · 01/06/2024 23:23

Finished it just now. It's really, staggeringly good; I'm so glad I watched it.

Will wait for everyone else too Smile

brendafromacrosstheroad · 01/06/2024 23:55

I've just turned it off half way through the second episode. It wasn't my kind of thing.
I googled what happened at the end tho Wink

Seaoftroubles · 02/06/2024 00:01

Also enjoyed this and found the setting and production style very realistic of early 80s TV shows. B.C was very good but l also thought McKinley Belcher was great, very intense and memorable in his role as the Detective.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/06/2024 12:42

Just finished. My goodness, that was good. A hell of a lot of issues dealt with, and magnificent acting. Complex characters and relationships, and some admirably strong female characters.

Maybe it's my age (I was born in 1980) but it really brought the 80s to life, nothing felt at all dated to me.

More of that sort of thing, please, Netflix.

Rollergirl11 · 02/06/2024 13:02

Just watched first 3 episodes. It’s really very very good. Love the way it’s shot with that 80’s bright saturation. Soundtrack is great too. Stellar acting. Itching to talk about it! Only thing I don’t love is the way they introduce a character as suspicious and then almost immediately show us why they didn’t do it. I prefer to be kept pondering a bit longer!

tennissquare · 02/06/2024 13:57

There is a podcast called Soundtracking with Edith bowman with an episode where Abi Morgan and Lucy Forbes discuss the soundtrack. Tim Minchin wrote the theme tune to Good Day Sunshine!

My favourite moment was hearing A Forest by The Cure in episode 2, so unexpected.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/06/2024 14:04

I enjoyed that @tennissquare and Killing Moon too. I had a little sofa dance to Gloria 😀.

I also thought McKinley Belcher was fantastic and totally believable, plus it was lovely to see Clarke Peters again although it took me a moment to place him 😊

mrsnjw · 02/06/2024 16:12

I think the Gloria nightclub scene will become popular like running up that hill in stranger things.

Rollergirl11 · 02/06/2024 16:52

Agree about the Gloria nightclub dancing scene will potentially make the song popular again like Running up that hill and Murder on the dance floor. Excellent choice of music so far; Gloria is the epitome of synthy anthemic disco and was perfect in that scene. Haven’t heard Killing Moon yet so I’ll look forward to that!

mrsnjw · 02/06/2024 16:55

Ahh yes, SEB in saltburn. That was a strange film 🧐

Averagelife · 02/06/2024 16:58

I downloaded thisafter singing full pelt along to it last night whilst watching Eric.

I’ve listened to it twice since and it’s now been deleted 😄 some songs need to stay in the 80s

PiningForTheMoon · 02/06/2024 17:40

Thank you for this recommendation @Hesperatum, I'm loving it.

No idea which episode I'm on as I just keep lining up the next one.

Netaporter · 02/06/2024 21:27

Finished it today - it was a family watch. We all really enjoyed it - satisfying ending.

Obviously we all went to bed the night before humming Gloria 😂

Pixilicious1 · 03/06/2024 06:22

For those that have finished it - did anyone else find the ending disappointing?

Not me. Why did you feel disappointed?
