Just started watching Eric on Netflix. Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent. Subject matter dark.

Not me. Why did you feel disappointed?

I found the end quite trite and unrealistic. Not the Marlon Rochelle storyline but the Edgar one.

namechangefandango · 03/06/2024 14:02

Half way through, think it’s perfect so far. Great soundtrack, really interesting depiction by Benedict and he is fab in his role.
I couldn’t imagine what it must feel like but his behaviour reminds me of my own post natal psychosis .
It has everything .love this era New York too, the styles, the music and the pre gentrification

Yes same, I was with it but for some reason the kid actor at the end really felt fake and unrealistic.
I think it was good for showing psychosis, but a bit too "American" happy ending.

Exactly - felt like they’d ditched a more gritty ending for one that was neat with a bow
on the top

Footgoose · 03/06/2024 23:31

The ending re Edgar and family wasn’t what I was expecting. Agree with other who have highlighted the same thing . The other story threads were concluded in keeping with what to expect from something so dark.

I think the very last scene was to suggest that a relapse is always a possibility .

Oblomov24 · 04/06/2024 18:58

Watched 1. Not easy watching, in a good way.

Rollergirl11 · 04/06/2024 20:54

Also disappointed with the Edgar ending. Actually the Edgar storyline made zero sense and was utter nonsense. It spoiled it for me as I really liked up until episode 4 and then it just got ludicrous.

When can we discuss?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/06/2024 22:03

Very much enjoyed first episode

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 05/06/2024 14:33

I'm watching this at the moment and it's fantastic writing, acting and I love the 80s nostalgia. The detective is great.

westisbest1982 · 05/06/2024 15:07

I’ve had to go onto Wiki to understand what was going on 😊

Apart from being confused, I really enjoyed the series and feel this may be BC’s finest hour as an actor.

oberst · 05/06/2024 15:22

I binged this and thought it was amazing

peachescariad · 05/06/2024 15:32

I'm in the minority here - although BC's acting was brilliant ( I'm not a fan) his character was a vile, selfish and a narcissistic addict. I couldn't bear him. Having said that, there was a lot of pretty vile characters throughout. However, Mikey Ledroit was just fabulous.

VanCleefArpels · 06/06/2024 11:56

I have many questions about the ending….but don’t want to spoil it for anyone so I’ll try to be careful….

I thought that one of the characters was rather too CLEAN looking after that thing that happened in the underground place. It disproportionately annoyed me 😂

NoMoreCheddar · 06/06/2024 15:38

Benedict was great in it, all the acting was great with fab cinematography too.

However.. I did feel like I was watching an alternate reality episode of 80s Beauty and the Beast. Anyone remember that one? Gravel voiced character called Vincent running around New Yorks sewers, even Eric reminded me of Perlmans character. I'm guessing the writer of Eric was a fan of Beauty and the Beast 🤣

Averagelife · 06/06/2024 16:47

@NoMoreCheddar Omg yes! Now you say it 😆 I’d totally forgotten about that series.

Mumteedum · 06/06/2024 21:02

I really liked it and liked the ending. It was more a fairytale than a gritty drama so I could suspend disbelief and go with it. Thought it was incredibly well acted and had some interesting themes about grief, identity and a bunch of stuff.

Haha - DH said the exact same thing about them looking very clean!

I enjoyed BC’s performance but didn’t think the story was great, nothing that elevated it above other dramas. The theme tune for the show was annoyingly catchy though!

MattDamon · 06/06/2024 21:17

Started out really interesting, but the parents' bizarre behaviour was just too jarring and made no sense most of the time, even in the context of the dad being mentally unwell. The wife's actions in particular were more like those of a woman whose son had been missing for months/years, rather than a few days.

The son's storyline... I agree with the consensus. It did not fit with the rest of the series. It could have been cool if the dad was hallucinating that his son was in a puppet version of NYC as he tracked his movements through the city. So, still gritty (Avenue Q-style) but in a PG13 way that tied in with the whole kid's show theme.

The imaginary character felt wasted and pointless in later episodes. It could have been used so much more effectively to delve into the dad's psyche/his relationships/why he is the way that he is.

Benedict was a pleasure to watch, as usual. Anyone else spot Roy (Pam's boyfriend) from The Office (US version)? 😁

Hoppinggreen · 06/06/2024 21:26

Watched it all now.
There was a lot going on but we really enjoyed it and it kind of all comes together at the end

Loveriver · 06/06/2024 21:26

How shit and inept were Edgar's parents?!?

NoMoreCheddar · 06/06/2024 21:48

If anyone else has "Good day sunshine" stuck in their head, blame Tim Minchin, he wrote it 😃

This. It was promising in the beginning, but became completely implausible by about episode 4. I didn't like the child actor and it just didn't make any sense.

For those that have finished it - did anyone else find the ending disappointing?

I hated the ending so much I struggled to watch it. I can't say why without spoiling the ending, but I thought it was cringey.

Doteycat · 07/06/2024 00:49

Nah. Absolute rubbish.
Watched it but only cos i cldnt be arsed finding something else.
Rediculous storyline and the ending was cringeworthy shite.
