Just started watching Eric on Netflix. Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent. Subject matter dark.

Nah. Absolute rubbish.
Watched it but only cos i cldnt be arsed finding something else.
Rediculous storyline and the ending was cringeworthy shite.

😆 Don't hold back will you? 👍🏻

JustGettingStarted · 07/06/2024 17:11

The ending was sooo cringey.

It was a cool, dark story and then it had a cheesy ending. It was a bit like the subway platform scene at the end of Crocodile Dundee. Or the "Captain oh Captain" scene in Dead Poets Society. Only because it was at the end of a very gritty drama it was just cringey.

Meredusoleil · 07/06/2024 22:37

Finished this today. Might be a spoiler, so don't read if part way through still.

Was I the only one that thought Edgar's behaviour was rather extreme just to get away from his fighting parents?!? Could he not have stayed with family/friends instead of going underground? Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire 🔥

And then to act like nothing had happened afterwards. Despite all the turmoil he had caused for the people around him 🙄

Meredusoleil · 08/06/2024 07:38

So, mind the rant here, but I really didn't like all the non-stop foul language from everyone (except maybe Ledroit and Edgar who barely spoke anyway). Every sentence they said had to contain the f word. So unnecessary imho.

And another thing, did we find out if Vincent has an actual diagnosed mental health condition and if so, what that was? His mother alluded to him needing medication, but for what? His character really was a messed up alcoholic, addict, selfish, obnoxious narcissist. But was there more to it - that wasn't explained?

Yes I was really enjoying it until about episode 4.
The Marlon storyline was really good though and I absolutely loved Ledroit. They should do a spin off cop series!

Rollergirl11 · 08/06/2024 13:25

@Meredusoleil my take is that he is in the middle of psychosis. He’s talking to a furry monster fgs! Yes his mother alludes to him not taking medication and says a few times that “it’s happening again” so I would say that he does have a diagnosed personality disorder at the very least. And given that it’s the 80’s I would guess he’s meant to have Schizophrenia as there weren’t too many personality disorders known back then.

But I agree he was also a very unpleasant individual.

Yes just finished tonight and I agree!
It was however a study in the good and bad of all the characters involved. I hate when writers try to get too political in things though. I can't work out if it would have been a better story without the monster though.

mrwalkensir · 10/06/2024 00:54

Wonder how much input Gaby Hoffmann had - can't get more NY than being brought up in the Chelsea Hotel in the 80s! Always love to see Phoebe Nicholls.

Cattyisbatty · 10/06/2024 07:33

Enjoyed it here - I thought BC was phenomenal in it and Ledroit a great character.
Agree Edgar’s parents were awful, the mum really annoyed me!
Great soundtrack though - esp The Cure! Very 80s.
I suppose the ending was that the issues Ie, Eric, still lurks in the background even when things are looking good. I can def relate to that.

ElsaMars · 15/06/2024 09:54

Binged this yesterday, not a huge fan of BC but I thought his acting was off the chart superb. Such an unlikeable character that I also felt sympathy for, very hard to act that I think.

Is Edgar supposed to be ND, his lack of communication was a bit annoying and distracting, deliberately or otherwise.

The other themes in this, corruption, racism, and homelessness were really well portrayed too. I loved this line from the civil rights lawyer 'Do you know how to spell racism? NYPD'

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/06/2024 10:00

i can't believe in 1985 Ledroit was hiding being gay.
there seemed to be too much going on, confusing with the nightclub
got through it and was relieved it was over when it was tbh

anythinginapinch · 15/06/2024 10:53

I was disappointed with it. Too many stereotypes. Badly done "underworld" shit, and the idea that he was left alone in the underworld when the police had somehow removed everyone else. Bit rubbish really when you take BC out of it.

Disturbia81 · 15/06/2024 11:03

Really enjoyed this. Love that there is so much 80s stuff being done in the last decade, and done well. It's now a time where it's been long enough to want to re-live it and the quality of filming, staging, clothes, cgi etc is top notch.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/06/2024 23:39

SPOILER-

Just watched this and loved it. I think the ending was perfect ,it was almost cheesy but then there was his own Eric hovering in the back ground ever ready to pounce again. Superb.

Loveriver · 15/06/2024 23:44

Why did Yusef keep him? He knew who he was he could have given him back! Did he want the reward money?

This is what I didn't get either!

If he was such a good guy, trying to do the right thing, he should have taken him back before the shit hit the fan and the girl had to take him!

Mumteedum · 16/06/2024 09:28

I didn't think Yusuf was exactly keeping him. He was trying to keep the boy safe when he'd gone underground and Edgar was the one hiding from his Dad. The weird take that Vincent had on it was true. He had to convince Edgar to come home.

I think when the reward was announced it complicated things because Yusuf wanted the money?

I did just wish he'd take him back though!

the80sweregreat · 16/06/2024 09:30

I liked it. It was well acted and a bit different
I loved the one playing Edgar's mum.

There is a podcast called Soundtracking with Edith bowman with an episode where Abi Morgan and Lucy Forbes discuss the soundtrack. Tim Minchin wrote the theme tune to Good Day Sunshine!

My favourite moment was hearing A Forest by The Cure in episode 2, so unexpected.

Yes, I absolutely love that song. I had forgotten all about it and it immediately took me back to my childhood. I had to go play it on YouTube. I didn't realise how young and gorgeous he was when this song came out.

This series is incredibly nostalgic in it's representation of the 80s. A dark version!

the80sweregreat · 16/06/2024 09:51

I liked the soundtrack too , especially hearing The Cure.

What do you mean you can't believe he was hiding being gay in 1985? A black cop today would hide being gay. In 1985 gay men were being persecuted more than ever because of AIDS.

JustGettingStarted · 16/06/2024 11:01

Yeah the NYPD in the 80's was hardly a safe space.

Arconialiving · 16/06/2024 15:56

Binge watched it yesterday & today - thought it was great! Really enjoyed all the nuances & varying storylines & how they all weaved (were woven?!) together. Poor Marlon & his mum.

the80sweregreat · 16/06/2024 16:18

BC was good.
The colleague lady puppeteer was very much how I imagine a puppeteer to be! Not that I've ever met any , but she seemed to play the part well. Dh agreed with me too.

pinkyspromises · 16/06/2024 20:07

This was great. I didn't expect to like it and the puppet theme was odd but the detective and crime stories running through the plot were gripping
