Eurovision Semi Final 2 - No Spoilers

Welcome back! Time for more Eurovision…

I bring good news; after last year’s absence the key change is back! Whoop! (See if you can spot it)

Tonight has folk, fairytales and well No Limits. No. No. No. No. No. No. Limits. Theres lots of circles

This year is a bit different to previous years. The BIG FIVE plus the HOST all perform like the other contestants at all three semi final performance as part of the main show to try and level the playing field. France, Spain and Italy will perform in Semi 2.

Don’t miss: Bookies 2nd Fav Switzerland, Spain, jury tempter Italy and roof-raiser Netherlands. There’s a few other half decent songs tonight too to please Eurovision fans. It WILL be better than Tuesday!

Out of the other 16 entries, only 10 will go through to the final. The semi-final is TELEVOTE ONLY.

After the conclusion of Semi 2, the qualifying finalists will be drawn into THREE lots. Four will draw ‘First Half’, Five will draw ‘Second Half’ and the remainer will be ‘Producers Choice’ and can be placed anywhere in the show. Sweden has already drawn their order for the final and will perform 1st. The Big Five also have already been drawn - UK and Germany got first half. France got second half. Italy and Spain got producers choice. The producers will put out the running order for the Final in the early hours of Friday morning (it’s usually before 1am UK time). The Final is TELEVOTE AND JURY VOTE.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUBTITLES

Wow it's like buying Smash Hits

Grin

That tickled me.

Used to love Smash Hits. It still charms me that Neil Tennant was on that mag before becoming a Pet Shop Boy. Wish they'd represent us at Eurovision. Wouldn't that be wild?
I put the lyrics up as I didn't know how many of you were geeks and would already know it was all about condemning the slut-shaming of women in a patriarchal culture. There's already been comments on the singer's age/clothes. I think she nails it.

JaneJeffer · 09/05/2024 23:43

He was such a funny writer. Strangely though well known people don't seem to do well at Eurovision.

If Israel storm the televote, they could in theory, win.

That wouldn't exactly go down well.

39.31% is massive though from a Catholic country.
There's only 27,000 Jewish people in Italy approx.
So either there's a lot of multi-vote rigging going on.
Or people felt sorry for her being under house-arrest.
I feel sorry for her.
And she has a good voice.
But voting for her?
Not a strong enough song.
It's a difficult one.
Ukraine beat Sam but their song was strong and it was understandable that people would feel good voting for them.
Israel will have its supporters. What happened in October was inexcusable.
But the response has been disproportionate.
Will there be a political vote from those who are pro-Israel on Saturday?
Possibly. Could it be an organised, orchestrated vote en masse?
Not sure.

True. Katrina and the waves were an exception.
I think Dima Bilan was already well known too, at least in Russia.
Blue should have done better but Lee lost his voice iirc.

frankincenseandmyrrh · 10/05/2024 04:31

I'm surprised people are surprised that Latvia got through. It was a good song, with good lyrics, sung well by a man with a strong good voice and decent stage presence. It was a relief to have a singer who could actually sing on key and was not surrounded by 5 dancers in bodysuits doing interpretative dance.

MushMonster · 10/05/2024 06:25

I love love love Latvia.

PrincessScarlett · 10/05/2024 07:00

I quite like the Israel song. And I find Eden Golan very impressive at 20 years old to have the bravado to sing her heart out admist all the booing.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 10/05/2024 07:06

EvilRingahBitch · 09/05/2024 23:29

Hmmmm

I was wondering about the possibility of intervention in the vote by parties motivated to stir discord, but hoped I was just being cynical .

That is a very odd vote distribution looking at the others. And not from an obvious country either.

PrincessScarlett · 10/05/2024 07:07

Just watching the news and it's been reported that Eden Golan is holed up in her hotel room guarded by armed police. Not the usual party scene we see for Eurovision.

PrincessScarlett · 10/05/2024 07:09

Good Morning Britain has just reported that Israel is second in bookies favourites to win tomorrow night. Will be interesting to see what on earth will happen if Israel win.

Its impressive that people can ignore what the booing is about.

Can't sleep.

Italian television has 'accidentally' leaked their voting percentages for tonight (this is Italy only)

Malta 2.19%
Albania 6.68%
Greece 5.29%
Switzerland 6.03%
Czechia 4.48%
Austria 2.84%
Denmark 2.93%
Armenia 5.83%
Latvia 2.91%
San Marino 3.54%
Georgia 6.64%
Belgium 1.68%
Estonia 2.8%
Israel 39.31%
Norway 1.55%
The Netherlands 7.32%

That will be why Israel is now second favourite I suppose.

ilovesooty · 10/05/2024 08:40

I see Croatia has a massively favourable draw in the running order. Ukraine has the death slot.

Violetparis · 10/05/2024 08:41

I think many people feel sorry for Eden Golan and admire her courage, she will win alot of sympathy votes.

And completely unfair to all the other contestants in the running for first place.
The song was good but it's not a winner by far!

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 10/05/2024 08:51

How is the running order decided?

Anyone get a good look at Petra's shoes last night? She seems to be a fan of flats, good on her, all that standing about.

InTheUpsideDownToday · 10/05/2024 08:57

This is a Twix link. Boos for Israel from the audience.

It won't be the first time a song wins for reasons other that being a good song.

InWalksBarberalla · 10/05/2024 09:28

I think this kind of footage, all the booing etc will only increase the sympathy vote and increase the odds of Israel winning.

It's stupid isn't it? And totally counter productive.

I think that having Israel in the final will cause havoc in the voting. Personally I wish they hadn't qualified. The song isn't a winner.

I liked Dons saying in the press conference that Latvia is shaped like a butterfly which is a symbol of freedom and that every country deserves to be free 🦋
