Welcome back! Time for more Eurovision…

I bring good news; after last year’s absence the key change is back! Whoop! (See if you can spot it)

Tonight has folk, fairytales and well No Limits. No. No. No. No. No. No. Limits. Theres lots of circles

This year is a bit different to previous years. The BIG FIVE plus the HOST all perform like the other contestants at all three semi final performance as part of the main show to try and level the playing field. France, Spain and Italy will perform in Semi 2.

Don’t miss: Bookies 2nd Fav Switzerland, Spain, jury tempter Italy and roof-raiser Netherlands. There’s a few other half decent songs tonight too to please Eurovision fans. It WILL be better than Tuesday!

Out of the other 16 entries, only 10 will go through to the final. The semi-final is TELEVOTE ONLY.

After the conclusion of Semi 2, the qualifying finalists will be drawn into THREE lots. Four will draw ‘First Half’, Five will draw ‘Second Half’ and the remainer will be ‘Producers Choice’ and can be placed anywhere in the show. Sweden has already drawn their order for the final and will perform 1st. The Big Five also have already been drawn - UK and Germany got first half. France got second half. Italy and Spain got producers choice. The producers will put out the running order for the Final in the early hours of Friday morning (it’s usually before 1am UK time). The Final is TELEVOTE AND JURY VOTE.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUBTITLES

EUROVISION Semi 2 Running Order

Its impressive that people can ignore what the booing is about.

Or wonder why Israel has decided to send a 20 year old into effectively Europe wide mass protests against their actions just to prove some kind of point, and ending with her under armed guard in her hotel room. The organisers should have banned Israel for the same reason they banned Russia. Having them there makes a mockery of them saying ' United by music' every 5 seconds when clearly we are not.

Indeed. Call me cynical but it's deliberate.

ScribblingPixie · 10/05/2024 15:00

Israel have deliberately sent a song that's significant to them as a country with a singer good enough and sufficiently young and attractive to impress the jury and televote? Yeah, I think that's probably true in which case they're doing exactly what every country is doing.
IMO Eurovision should never ban a country. I think Russia should still be taking part. Being pickier about which countries host makes more sense than focusing wrath on individual singers - that just creates nastiness and backlash with even more political voting, as we'll probably see now.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 10/05/2024 15:56

Eurovision has always been political, no matter how many times they say ' Oh were beyond politics, we're all about the music!' The EBU have allowed Israel to use a 20 year old as a PR exercise for a regime that is currently completely out of control.
Having her there puts a dampener on the whole event, because it reminds people immediately of the atrocities being committed and makes a laughing stock of presenters blabbering on about being ' united by music' and sticking their fingers in their ears to booing and silence from the audience. The Israelis have stuck her there to represent her country, at a time when her country is facing unprecedented levels of disapproval and disgust.

How did they qualify then?

Just read that joost is not allowed at the moment to take part of the rehearsals.

Edited

Agree 😞
I absolutely love Eurovision and have watched it for over 40 years.
Just feel anxious about it at the moment, like anything could kick off.

Just seen this in regards to The Netherlands

I think that was a protestor that managed to get into rehearsals. Separate incident to Joost. They just showed that video on the news. Sounds like the organisers are having a nightmare today with one thing and another.

ilovesooty · 10/05/2024 19:16

I see the BBC on the 6 o clock news made no mention of Israel or the Netherlands when assessing the contestants.

InglouriousBasterd · 10/05/2024 19:44

I’ve just seen a live from backstage where they’re saying Joost will not perform tonight but they will use semi final footage for the jury show as the investigation is ongoing.

Please note the above link is from a Jewish publication.
Do not click if it will trigger you.
I found it interesting reading in terms of trying to understand sympathies towards Eden and explaining the mass pro-Israel vote leaked by Italy.

I love Eurovision. Always have. Always will.

I am gutted if Joost has had some kind of meltdown. No clear statement on what has happened. If goaded about his father, I can understand him losing it. If hitting a female photographer, I cannot make any sense of that.
Israel being dragged into altercations with Netherlands and Spain is hugely problematic, if remotely true.

See you all tomorrow after Tardis

EvilRingahBitch · 11/05/2024 00:25

My money for what it's worth, is on a very tightly wound Joost badly misinterpreting someone else's comment in a language that neither of them speak natively and kicking off. But that's purely a guess.

If two Swedish media outlets report that Joost was involve in an altercation with a Swedish photographer but the details aren't yet clear, what does that tell you about "Twitter"?

Tbh I think it says more about the EBU and communication.

Rumours about various things have been going around twitter all week precisely because there hasn't been clear communication.

The reports in the Swedish press haven't been picked up because well, they've been in Swedish. Twitter has other languages but English dominates.

It's now after 9am in Malmo and there's still no official word on the Joost situation OR when rest of the world voting will open.

If you are in Malmö you are desperate for news. What happened on Wednesday night was a similar thing. It's not pleasant and actually it's very unsettling and unnerving when you are actually there. You don't know how the crowd is going to react etc etc.

The EBU clearly do not, even now, have the situation under control - there's lots of different issues which are separate but are blending into one in some respects too. A lot of the artists are clearly upset and feeling frustrated by various different things.

Ultimately the EBU have the power to clear this up and that would reduce the amount of rumours. They haven't. Possibly because I suspect they are trying to contain a full scale artist revolt and it's not going well.

EasterIssland · 11/05/2024 08:21

Has ebu or joost confirmed this ?

No. Neither.

That's my point.

The Swedish Broadcast hosting published an article on this. It's here:
https://www.svt.se/kultur/incident-utreds-kring-nederlandske-artisten-joost-klein

Translation reads as follows
The Netherlands' representative in Eurovision, Joost Klein, did not participate during the entire genre rep on Friday afternoon. He was in the opening flag parade but when it was his turn to sing, they skipped his contribution. The country also did not participate during the evening's rehearsal.

According to information to SVT, there must have been a physical confrontation between the artist and a photographer.

In a statement from the EBU about the Dutch artist's absence, they write:

“We are currently investigating an incident reported to us involving the Dutch artist. He will not rehearse for the time being. We have no further comment at this time and will update in due course.”

The Malmö police confirm to SVT Nyheter that they are on site in the arena and investigating the incident.

- There is no established notification at the moment. But we are on site and carrying out investigation measures to see what has happened, says Rickard Lundqvist, press spokesperson at the police in the South region.

Then there's one of the Swedish Tabloids which because it's a tabloid needs a certain amount of caution.

Translation:
Aftonbladet can now reveal that Joost Klein is accused of being violent towards a woman who works with the television production.

- I don't know how serious it is or what has happened, but the EBU is investigating this right now, says a source with access to the production.

- In any case, it's very serious, because you don't let him scratch. Taking three and a half minutes out of a TV show like that is not easy, so it is clear that it is very serious.

According to Aftonbladet's experience, the EBU has held several crisis meetings in connection with the Malmö arena. The EBU's Eurovision manager Martin Österdahl was not in the TV pictures during the first genre rep in the arena, when he would have otherwise appeared for his usual line "You're good to go".

To Aftonbladet's question whether Joost Klein has been violent, a spokesperson from the EBU replies:

- We are currently investigating an incident reported to us involving the Dutch artist. He will not rehearse until further notice. We have no further comments on this and will update when the opportunity arises.

This freely admits to this being unconfirmed and still just rumour. They don't know what's happened.

So the most that you really get from this is it was an production staff member - so the assumption is Swedish. We have no idea of context. Nor the pressure the singer was put under in the 24hrs previously. (The press conference on Thursday was not in the artists interests. And then there was the announcement of the running order which put Joost in a difficult position).

My feeling is that artists have not been well looked after at all by production tbh. And something has broken - not just for Joost but for a number of artists at this point.

We shouldn't be in this position at nearly 10am local on the day of the final.

”Incident” utreds kring nederländske artisten Joost Klein
