Looks like the producers have rounded up some ‘interesting’ contestants….😂

TonIght’s opening episode features renovation of accommodation in a Norfolk convent. From today’s Times :- “ one of the contestants first appears in an outfit that Carr playfully suggests makes her look as though she has arrived from zippos Circus and the Victorian enthusiast Ben is not an unflamboyant presence”

Yeah sometimes their decisions are weird. Makes me wonder if there’s a disconnect between the timing of decisions and the final edit, that maybe isn’t showing what they based it on?

I would have shown Anthony the door straight after that he slapped up the giant seggsy nun decal in the first episode! But they must have seen his potential hidden beneath the tack.

Totally agree with you about last year! In my opinion, Jack was a much better designer, and I was really quite shocked when he didn't win. Hope he's doing well in his career now.

To be fair, Monica pulled it out of the bag in the final. Jack had been far better throughout the competition but she really won it that episode. It was like she finally worked out what she was meant to be doing.

Agree with this. He was brilliant all the way (and I was sure he’d win) through but she did a better job in the final and I think they just had to judge on that.

I agree. I thought Jack had it all the way through till that final, and then Monika's pub/restaurant was superb.

Seaside3 · 28/03/2024 17:35

I disagree @SoupDragon , I just couldn't get behind her choices at all.
Jack seems to be flourishing in Instagram, not seen anything of Monica, but I might not follow her. I also liked Tom from last year, he wwwmed to understand design far more than Monica.

I can understand someone whose design style is different than mine, I just don't really get the people who slap.a bit of paint on the wall, paint a few bits of old furniture.and call.them.selves a designer. Most of us can manage that.

SoupDragon · 28/03/2024 19:10

I remember thinking that Jack threw it away in the final. It was his for the taking and his design just wasn't a winner. It was below what he had done all series.

I do think he was the better designer over all but judged on that one week, he lost.

Him and Tom were my picks for the final. I was gutted when Tom was sent home. Do I think Monica deserved to be in the final? No - I disagreed with that decision. However, annoyingly I think she was the right winner.

What accent does Francesca have? I cannot place it. I liked the green paint in the winning room, wonder what brand it was to end up needing so many coats?

London - maybe north London? But she has travelled a lot so probably picked up lots of influences.

Seaside3 · 29/03/2024 09:10

Thanks @RubyOtter o think I followed her for a while, but it's not my aesthetic, so unfollowed. Occasionally I do a cull, she must have been given the chop.

I just had a look at the rooms she did as the prize, very monika, which makes me wonder if that influences Michelle's choice as to who wins. I'd imagine jack or Tom wouldn't have been as suited to the cocktail lounge as she was.

Madcats · 29/03/2024 10:25

So DD and I we t to listen to Banjo last night; what a lovely man.

He spoke a little about Interior Design Masters. In his day the contestants were given £1,000 to spend on a room. This didn't include petrol money, so he would shoot around the country in his campervan, picking up bits and bobs.

The 2 days to do a room tends to be rather shorter. After they have finished the tradesman can come in to finish off/secure any obvious disasters.

His advice/observation to contestants was to focus on a couple of statement aspects for the room, and do them well, rather than trying to be too ambitious and rushing/not finishing.

Seaside3 · 29/03/2024 14:54

@Madcats I'm so pleased he appears to be doing well from the show. So many contestants from these types of shows just disappear, never to be seen again.

Interesting. £1,000 isn’t very much. I do wonder if some people supplement it from their own money.

I'm sure that sometimes they say that they are using something that they had hanging about.

WingingItSince1973 · 29/03/2024 22:40

I've been watching series 2 again. Michelle was getting quite emotional when she had to send people home. The talent was really good.

Halsall · 30/03/2024 09:23

Banjo has The Eye - which is the key to success. He’s able to use what would be a load of old tat to others in a clever, pleasing and harmonious way: it then looks as though it was always meant to be there. I may not always have personally loved every aspect of his style but he sure knew how to put it together.

But I’m not sure it’s something that can really be learned if you don’t have it, tbh.

SoupDragon · 30/03/2024 10:40

I think it can be learned to a certain extent. First you need the confidence to try and then you need to be able to recognise when it hasn't worked and learn from that. We've only seen his successes, not the stuff from when he started out that hasn't worked.

also, you need the space to store the stuff you know will work somewhere but you just haven't found that place yet!

Madcats · 30/03/2024 12:35

Applications for Series 6 close on 8 April per wikipedia.

Good to hear/discover that Series 2- 4 are on iPlayer.

I probably missed a few of the earlier episodes.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/03/2024 21:39

Banjo has such an endearing personality. So glad he's done well.

Netaporter · 02/04/2024 05:16

Reminder to get your snacks ready for 8pm tonight as the gang move on to Swansea to tackle cafe renovations judged by restaurateur and chef Nisha Katona.

We still have left in the competition:
Domhall
Anthony
Favourite to win, Matt
Francesca
Roisin
and…everyone’s favourite mumsnetter, 😉 …Ben.

See you all at 8!

So, what is on the Bingo card for cafe week?

Impractical non washable upholstery?
The non drying floor often comes in on "shop" week, as does the "surprise ceiling"

Madcats · 02/04/2024 09:39

Matt has been the likely winner for a while, but I am wondering about Anthony?

At about this stage of the competition one of the favourites usually has a wobble.

I think this will be a good episode.

SoupDragon · 02/04/2024 11:50

I agree that Anthony is a contender.

Are the cafes team work or individual?
