Looks like the producers have rounded up some ‘interesting’ contestants….😂

TonIght’s opening episode features renovation of accommodation in a Norfolk convent. From today’s Times :- “ one of the contestants first appears in an outfit that Carr playfully suggests makes her look as though she has arrived from zippos Circus and the Victorian enthusiast Ben is not an unflamboyant presence”

I thought Francesca’s looked surprisingly okay at the end actually. The right two went home.

i do recall from previous series that Michelle’s comments often end up contracting each other from episode to episode. So I expect we’ll have an episode coming up where the contestant should have been more obvious and literal. Grin

eleanorwish · 27/03/2024 09:19

I agree that Michelle's comments aren't very consistent. Some are criticised for being a one trick pony and others for not having a signature style

witheringrowan · 27/03/2024 09:53

Matt was the only one who was talking about the people who would use the space when he was explaining his choices. Almost everyone else was just thinking about what they individually would want, not understanding who is actually going to be using it! I did laugh when the other designers walked into Matt's room and sneered "oh it's a bit corporate..." - yeah, Ascot makes a fortune from corporate entertainment, so his felt bang on, much more than spray painted trellis and random velvet circles on the wall.

WingingItSince1973 · 27/03/2024 09:56

Ben is very vocal in a Facebook group! Almost argumentative if anyone questions him. Wonder how far in the comp he got.

Giggorata · 27/03/2024 10:42

Another thing I noticed was that Michelle and Kelly ignored the balconies.
I would have thought they might have looked for some continuity there.
The balconies were quite drab and utility, and, along with the box interiors, and could have done with… something.
Ben, for example, had added a black and white striped cloth to the table, which looked good, although I only caught a glimpse of it.

Similarly with the bar areas. I noticed someone had carried on her yellow paint into the bar, which was a good idea, even if I didn't particularly like her scheme.

BenIDM · 27/03/2024 11:15

@WingingItSince1973 by argumentative do you mean that I stop people in their tracks when they’re insulting me and getting personal?

and I’ve been reading the comments here ….clowncesca?

Supposedly this is a forum for mothers. Do you realise therefore that we are sons and daughters too, how would you feel if someone was so cruel to your child ?

And before you quote your right to an opinion, remember that your freedom ends where someone else’s starts.

The fact that you can say things, doesn’t mean you should and it doesn’t give you license and carte blanche to insult anyone.

I’ve been called a faggot, fat, arrogant, tacky and talentless so far in Twitter and other media .

Did input myself out there ? Yes.

Buy that shouldn’t give people license to insult.

If you don’t like the designs, fair game. I’m not here to be liked by everyone. But I’m not going to tolerate any disrespect.

tbanks you all ❤️

BuntyWindermear · 27/03/2024 11:17

Did Donnel have a caricature of Kate Middleton amongst the ones he did of Michelle, Kelly and Alan ? Looked very much like her in this photo which Google tells me is her at Ascot .

@BenIDM why are you on every social media being angry with peoples comments? I get trying to defend yourself but you are coming across as an angry man. I would find it hard to read criticism too but it's opinions. I'm sorry you're upset. Maybe leave off these places until it's over. You have great ideas etc etc but I don't think you're doing yourself any favours mentally reading peoples opinions. Yes if they get personal then that's awful but really it's just about the programme.

Yes I thought so.

I must say if I was on the tv I would avoid reading people online talking about me at all costs!

GrouchyKiwi · 27/03/2024 12:02

Ben, dude, step away from the internet. It's not good for you.

Congrats on getting onto IDM, and I hope it has achieved for you all that you hoped.

LadyEloise1 · 27/03/2024 12:09

I definitely think the right contestants were sent home.
Hannah and Jess just didn't seem to know what a corporate box was for and the type of people who would be using it.
I also agree that Michelle is inconsistent from week to week in her comments.
I actually don't know what she wants really - prior to the revamps she is clear but with contestants on the sofa at the end of the show, in her critique I'm a bit lost.
So many of the contestants don't listen to her initial brief though.
It's like they've decided on an idea and will carry it through and to hell with the clients.
If I were going to a box at Ascot I would have liked the whimsical Ben's - it had a sense of the magical and was so different to the normal corporate box.
However I don't think my dh ( who gets corporate invites ) would be that enamoured. He'd think it was all a bit daft.Smile
I thought Francesca's was surprisingly lovely. Again DH would be 😮
And I also agree with whoever said Alan isn't that funny. He's too try hard for me. Still he appears nice.

jay55 · 27/03/2024 13:03

Just catching up.
I've not been to ascot but to Epsom and Bath races several times for a work events.

They're almost all too fussy. And don't look easy to keep clean when you know there will be sick and pee incidents, and men punching the walls, however non-luxury such things are.

Francesca totally reminds me of Lena Durham this week.

useruserna · 27/03/2024 13:45

I do wish they would have some feedback from the clients eg in this case the hospitality team. They don't have to be on camera and it doesn't have to affect Michelle's decision, but if they're on the couch some feedback from the client would be really useful and interesting.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/03/2024 13:48

Yes, surely client feedback should figure into the judging? I don't understand why it doesn't.

Netaporter · 27/03/2024 15:07

@BenIDM I’m sorry you’ve been subjected to homophobia on other platforms, but you haven’t here. No one here cares about your sexuality nor what trouser size you take. Surely you (and for that matter Francesca) accept that if you put yourself on national telly wearing ‘out there’ clothing it will be mentioned? If I popped to the local Tescos wearing a scuba suit and a snorkel I’d expect to feature on the local FB page under the WTF section. Even the show host commented on your choice of garb which you didn’t seem to mind? We are mothers in the main yes, but we don’t all claim to wear halos. I’m sorry you feel offended but this is a light-hearted watch thread featuring the same chat probably going on in a lot of homes across the land…except most of us don’t have anyone at home remotely interested in watching it with us so here we all are. And there will be opinions.

Madcats · 27/03/2024 15:21

It might have been a much earlier series, but what was the programme where there were two contestants/teams each week where they tended to work on neighbouring historic properties?

It would be good for contestants to have a proper brief (and be told what can't be done from a health and safety perspective).

I suppose the difficulty with showing client feedback would be that the owners/users would probably disagree with Michelle.

LadyEloise1 · 27/03/2024 15:29

It was the one with Sophie Robinson @Madcats.

I preferred it as an interior design competition programme.

Just like I preferred the old MAFS UK version to the "let's copy the Australian type of MAFS".
I just stopped watching.

OutOfTheHouse · 27/03/2024 17:58

I agree with a PP that one of my thoughts was about keeping it clean and maintained. That was one of the advantages of Ben’s and Mat’s, simple plain colours that will be easy to patch up.

I agree that Mat seemed to be the only person who had thought about the end users. It was a little corporate, but then that’s who it is for.

AndThenYouDie · 27/03/2024 18:34

Did anyone notice the Indian room (episode 2, Chester Zoo) had a rhino on the wall..... But, uhumm, you don't get rhinos in India! Even the lion (also on the wall) is basically African. You do get the Asiatic lion in one small area of India, but it's not really considered an animal that comes from India.... India is well known for its Royal Bengal tiger -- but this was not on the wall at all! They should have brought a zoologist in to judge the rooms.... The girl that put those two animals on the wall got through!

Seaside3 · 27/03/2024 18:54

@BenIDM I'd stop engaging with these posts if I were you. If I were looking ylto employ an interior designer, (or any one), I wouldn't employ one who argues with every troll.
Concentrate on putting your work out there, don't give air to people you disagree with, otherwise that's all people will remember if you. Spend your energy wisely.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2024 19:28

I'm 20 minutes in on catchup and it's clear that many of them have no clue what "luxury" means.

Ellmau · 27/03/2024 19:28

@BenIDM I genuinely love your design style, but arguing with random people online won't do your career any good, honestly.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 27/03/2024 20:00

I assume they couldn't touch the outside space because they would all need to look uniform from the outside.

Do the bbc have to pay to strip out the bad stuff and redecorate?

SoupDragon · 27/03/2024 20:11

I think I would have sent home Roisin or Ben over Jess. I definitely afpgreed with Anthony top (with Matt a close second)

other thoughts before I go and read the thread:
How well does vinyl and Lino stand up to heels?
Francesca's artwork looked like it was done by her children
the rooms were all an improvement on the bland conference room look of before
Roisin should have left a gap between the trellis and added a border when it didn't match up
