Looks like the producers have rounded up some ‘interesting’ contestants….😂

TonIght’s opening episode features renovation of accommodation in a Norfolk convent. From today’s Times :- “ one of the contestants first appears in an outfit that Carr playfully suggests makes her look as though she has arrived from zippos Circus and the Victorian enthusiast Ben is not an unflamboyant presence”

Asiatic lions are lovely. They used to have some at Bristol zoo (back in the days when DD was tiny and we had a season ticket).

How was it that two teams appeared to have done minimal planning, but another was able to design and print material and posters?

I know they probably just screen a tiny amount of the footage, but I was surprised how the teams worked together (or not, as the case may be).

I've just been chatting to Ben on Facebook and he suggest people look at his instagram story as that explains more about the boat idea. X

It seems that Donal went off a made the wall stickers, posters and fabric before hand and turned up with it already done. Which seems a bit unfair. That was most of the room finished before they started.

SoupDragon · 20/03/2024 20:32

They've always been able to do preparation like that beforehand. Didn't Clowncesca and Matt both have bits of their ceiling things prepared (the leaves). Was it last year or the year before that one contestant had always designed her own wallpaper?

Team India were the only ones who didn't seem to have done much preparation this week. Upholstery Woman (Jess?) had researched which fabric to choose to go with the colour scheme but that seems to have been it.

PurplePositivity · 20/03/2024 22:12

Just watched on catch up, those lily pads reminded me of pizza Confused

Back in the day they always had input from the homeowners or interested parties. Made it more 'real' and stopped the designers getting carried away.

I guess unfair wasn’t really the term I was looking for. It just seemed that the only reason they did so well was because he had done so much.

I wish they would have a third judge who is the expert in context. E.g. for the nursery have a nursery worker, for this episode have someone who is going to actually work in the room

I agree. I think it would make a huge difference - but then it clashes with Michelle's control freakery on who should go and who should stay. 🤔

They did so well because they'd done the preparation though. It's part of the"job".

I'm not sure if this has always been the case, it was the clown outfit that made the penny drop, but the "before" and "after" studio bits look to have been shot at the same time. Everyone's in the same outfits.

In which case, they either get told the brief the week before, after a contestant has left, and that isn't filmed. Or they get told and have to collaborate virtually.

I also think the "studio" looks suspiciously like a building at Sussex Uni - the Falmer campus - but it's nearly 20 years since I was there so I could be wrong. But previous series, they walked through Brighton centre and now there's very few exterior shots.

Funny you should say that, @WhatsitWiggle, because that very thought struck me too. I was there last summer. It looked awfully familiar.

I wonder if they get the brief a while before and have to look surprised when they film it.
They also don’t seem to see the space in real life before hand either because a few times they say things like ‘it was bigger than I expected’.

WhatsitWiggle · 23/03/2024 19:57

Yes, I've heard that. But surely they get measurements, otherwise how do you know how much paint / flooring / fabric for curtains to order? I guess some people are better at picturing what a 5m x 10m space looks like than others?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 23/03/2024 20:18

Highly amusing thread 😊

Clowncesca can't leave until I've worked out who she reminds me of. I think it's a comedian - same mannerisms and everything, more noticeable in episode 2. She also reminds me of our accounts assistant at work and Meg from Family Guy.

Oh they certainly get all the measurements but it can be hard to visualise until you get to see it.

Cocolapew · 24/03/2024 19:30

Just caught up.
That was shit, honestly the painting done by the teams was so bad 😂 , apart from Brazil.
Happy to see the lovely Sophie though.
