Anyone interested in the build up this year? I have been more aware this year as the songs are announced. I like Croatia, Ireland and Finland. Dizzy is hopefully going to do well which makes it exciting - Olli Alexander should be good performing live and he is well known in Europe.

Just reading about the controversy with Israel’s entry and I see that Iceland might send a Palastinian singer.

Ukraine have been the favourites for a while but Croatia is just ahead of them now.

I'm in Ireland. The entry this year (Bambie Thug) is controversial but at least it's memorable and should stick out of the pack.

RuthW · 01/03/2024 12:05

Absolutely loved last year's entry and can't believe it did so badly.

I don't think Dizzy will do any better.

RunningAndSinging · 01/03/2024 12:26

Last year’s song was good but the live performance went badly wrong. Olly shouldn’t have that problem.

Be interesting to see the staging for Olly, loving the track. Loving Croatia entry too.

AutumnCrow · 01/03/2024 12:33

Hi! Just listening to Dizzy. Takes me back a bit to club scenes of the 1980s and 90s. Which is not necessarily unwelcome 🙂 Rather silly review of it in the Guardian btw.

I wonder if the inclusion of Israel will end up overshadowing the whole event this year.

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 01/03/2024 12:38

I listened to our entry this morning, bits of it remind me of something by the Pet Shop Boys.

I think we will do OK, it's a very eurovision song, and I love Olly as well.

Have tried to avoid listening to the other songs until the middle/end of the month when everything should be released. Heard a few clips that sound great though.

I think the eurovision bosses won't ban Israel outright, but will probably keep rejecting their songs so they won't be there.

KaarijasBowlCut · 01/03/2024 12:47

Very interested here! I've been enjoying the various national finals, though some more than others (San Marino had 129 songs of varied quality and descended into near-chaos at the end 🙈).

My favourites are Norway, Netherlands, Estonia, Croatia and Ireland.

With any luck, I'll be watching the final in the fan village in Malmö (missed out on arena tickets but hoping to pick up the village ones when they become available) but will certainly be enjoying the atmosphere in the city wherever we end up. 💃🥳

RunningAndSinging · 01/03/2024 13:07

That sounds amazing @KaarijasBowlCut . I have been looking at flights and am a bit tempted to go to an evening preview of a semifinal. Do you know which one the UK will be singing at?

OP posts:
KaarijasBowlCut · 01/03/2024 15:21

Unless the format changes, the UK won't be performing at either semifinal, unfortunately. As one of the "Big 5" countries who automatically go through to the final, it's usually just a clip of the video that's shown in one of the semifinals.

However, if you have a chance to go to any of the shows, I would totally seize the opportunity with both hands! We went to the Saturday afternoon preview of the final last year and it was so much fun.

TheBirdintheCave · 01/03/2024 15:25

I'm a traditionalist and only watch the final so go in totally blind to any songs entered into it. I judge them purely based on what I see on the night. Seems the fairest way to do things really!

Not even sure if I'll get to watch this year though as my second baby is due May 14th 😅

Yirk · 01/03/2024 15:28

Dizzy didn't do it for me sadly, dont think it will be a winner !

I had my little girl on May the 15th a few years back, 5 weeks early as well, she clearly just wanted to see the eurovision, we were still in hospital so watched it there with a little union jack baby grow on her and I had a wine glass for my squash, just so I felt a bit fancy 🤣

Good luck 💐

RunningAndSinging · 01/03/2024 16:10

I am sure I heard last year that the big 5 and host county perform at the evening preview of each semi final - three at each. But I don’t know who does which. There are tickets going and they are not crazy expensive but by the time you add flights and accommodation and annual leave I guess it would be a bit much.

RunningAndSinging · 01/03/2024 16:26

Aha I found it. This is from last year. So, if the format is the same, the UK will sing at the evening preview of semi final 1 on the Monday night as we are voting on the Tuesday night this year at the live semi final 1.

So Monday night in Malmo Arena includes the UK (Olly Alexander), Croatia (Baby Lasagna), Ireland (Bambi Thug) and Finland (Windows 95 man). Available for from SEK 495 or £37.92 per ticket. It’s very tempting……

Aah, perfect! Sorry, I was clearly misremembering. The prices are really good this year.

thecatsthecats · 01/03/2024 17:56

No, they don't perform. "Presented with" usually amounts to a preview clip of the rehearsal performance plus an interview, often in the booth.

I got a personal wave from Sam Ryder the night he did his in Turin. Preens self.

Stressybetty · 01/03/2024 22:23

Looking forward to Olly on Graham Norton tonight followed by the Eurovision party. The party was really good last year.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/03/2024 22:46

It always winds me up that the Big 5 don't get a full outing on TV until the Saturday night. I even wrote to the EBU about it. No reply. Bastards.

I'm really liking Dizzy but it's not had a great reception which surprises me.

So far as the other entrants (so far) are concerned, I know they usually grow on me but there's barely a melody between them this year.

I have tickets for the Saturday lunchtime show and hope to watch the final in the Village - hope to see you there @KaarijasBowlCut! (Username noted 😁)

This will be my fifth Eurovision (not including Rotterdam which we'd booked for both years but obviously couldn't go). We gave Liverpool a swerve last year, (although having agreed not to go, we all tried and failed to get tickets 😂)

I'd have called it a day after Turin as I don't think I'll have a better time than that night but then we couldn't resist Sweden! And we're staying in Copenhagen which has been on my bucket list for years.

Enjoy tonight everyone.

bizzey · 01/03/2024 22:55

Ohhh ...I didn't know there was Eurovision stuff on telly tonight!
Thank you...

Looks like I will need to keep a close eye on this thread !😁😅!

Lunde · 01/03/2024 22:56

Sweden is still working its way through its own competition, the Melodifestivalen, - it goes on for months!

  • 30 songs start the competition - divided into 5 heats of 6 songs
  • top 2 in each heat goes directly to final
  • 3rd and 4th in each heat goes to the lucky loser semi-final
  • then the grand final

Maybe there will be an entry by April!

RunningAndSinging · 01/03/2024 23:02

It’s Mans….. oh dear it might be a late night.

I love Heroes. I think it's my fave Eurovision song and the staging was brilliant, but Sam Ryder is a very close second. Pretty sure had it not been for Russia invading Ukraine Sam would have won. Not sure about Olly's song tbh. It will depend on whether it melds into everything else or stands out.

RunningAndSinging · 01/03/2024 23:24

i love Heroes too. So many great songs though - Northern Lights was fab too and Hold me closer that they had on earlier. Fairytale, Think About Things, Only Teardrops, Euphoria… can’t choose a favourite

OP posts:
NigelHarmansNewWife · 01/03/2024 23:27

I heard Euphoria earlier on Michelle Visage's Radio 2 show - such a great song. And I remember this, Take Me to Your Heaven.

Lunde · 01/03/2024 23:27

I love Måns and Heroes was a great song

However I really loved him as the interval act with "Love Love, Peace Peace"
