Anyone interested in the build up this year? I have been more aware this year as the songs are announced. I like Croatia, Ireland and Finland. Dizzy is hopefully going to do well which makes it exciting - Olli Alexander should be good performing live and he is well known in Europe.

Just reading about the controversy with Israel’s entry and I see that Iceland might send a Palastinian singer.

Ukraine have been the favourites for a while but Croatia is just ahead of them now.

We've two tickets for Semi 2 Matinee. They were £35 each including fees which I admit I was slightly gobsmacked at. Thats reasonable and cheaper than Liverpool. Which is why I'm not switching and I'm perfectly happy!

We are admittedly cheapskates by Eurovision fan standards and are flying home Friday. Last year we only had to consider tickets and parking in Liverpool (friend had flights) so I couldn't really justify a huge amount more anyway as Denmark/Sweden are not cheap destinations. Easyjet have already cancelled my planned flight out on Tuesday 'due to lack of demand' (wtf!) so I had to get a room at late notice for one extra night which wasn't cheap. We are there for the atmosphere and cheap/free stuff - the show itself is more of the icing on the cake.

I'm going with my friend who lives in another country so half the point is to see her and have a laugh anyway. Its different to just going to each others home countries which we've done a number of times before plus no kids for first time since forever.

The bonus is I still get to have a Eurovision Party at home too. Yay! Best of both worlds.

I'm super excited.

Not long to go now!!! My favourite time of the year. ♥️♥️♥️

KaarijasBowlCut · 05/04/2024 23:25

I managed to pick up a couple of tickets for the Saturday afternoon preview this morning which was our preferred option. I had trembly hands all day with the excitement of being able to go again.

I'm already desperately Googling pocket-y clothing - glad to see I'm not alone in my dismay about the no bag rule! I was using it as a way of trying to console myself about not having got tickets the first time round but now it's more of a concern. 🤔

mathanxiety · 06/04/2024 02:19

I have to agree, @RedToothBrush.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 06/04/2024 13:35

After yesterday's ticket success I'm feeling quite giddy. BFF (who I'm going with) are currently WhatsApping each other pictures of our various Union Jack scarves to see which one to take. And what are we going to wear on our heads. Currently tempted by this... 😂

Check the entry conditions before you get! There's a maximum flag size and I'd be very surprised if those hats were permitted. The rules for Malmö look stricter than for Liverpool and I think they'd have fallen foul of the rules for Liverpool.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 06/04/2024 15:21

I was very much joking about the umbrella hat 😊

I will check re flags though as we have small (A4 size) flags on sticks which we've always taken in our bags.

DH has been following his football team in Europe this season (I've just been following him in bars in Europe ha ha). All their flags have had to be submitted and pre-approved.

It's all getting a bit killjoy isn't it?

Warming up this evening with Beeb 2 showing the full 1974 Eurovision hosted in Brighton. I can just about remember watching this live. Yugoslavia currently on, almost BeeGees look alike, but sadly not sound alikes. Things have moved on quite a bit since😀

AutumnCrow · 07/04/2024 21:55

Was the BBC TV commentator in 1974 David Vine? With Wogan on the radio?

boys3 · 07/04/2024 22:03

@AutumnCrow yes David Vine - admittedly had to google to be sure. 😀Loved the scoring!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/04/2024 22:04

Place-marking on the thread.

@RedToothBrush that's brilliant! Have a fabulous time over there!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 08/04/2024 08:48

Loved re-watching 1974 last night! It was the first one I watched all the way through as a kid and I was hooked.

Didn't realise Italy was the same girl who did "Non ho l'età" which is one of my all time favourites. Some of the "fashion" was surprisingly current - satin shirts and flared wide leg trousers - and the Irish girl's dress was beautifully made. Ditto the Italian dress - could imagine that on a red carpet today. ONJ's frock was a horror God love her.

The programme afterwards was very interesting too. Has anyone seen the doc about "Intervision" the communist block equivalent?

RunningAndSinging · 08/04/2024 15:05

Just finished 1974 - so many good songs, loved the live orchestra and the long microphone wires and slightly scary connections and technology for the voting. A sensible number of songs and votes. Not sure about the voting system of one vote per juror who might have been anybody from what they said but I guess it got the right result.

I saw on Facebook that Mans isn’t going to be there in any capacity this year. Not sure how true that was - it would be sad not to see him in Sweden as a previous winner. Having thought about it more since earlier in the thread I have decided that I do agree that Heroes is the best ever Eurovision song.

I'd love to see a programme about the best songs that didn't win Eurovision, a kind of 'people's winners'.

My favourite is probably 'My Star' by Brainstorm (for Latvia, 2000) - the singer was the kooky guy with the massive bell-bottomed trousers. It was Latvia's debut and finished 3rd.

You'll be my runaway bride ... 🎶

  1. Verka Serduchka Dancing Lasha Tumbai
  2. Dami Im Sound of silence
  3. Keiino Spirit in the Sky
  4. Daði Freyr Think about things
  5. Eleni Foureira Fuego

These did so well though that they feel like winners to me! Grin

In case anyone is still looking for/considering buying tickets, I see there are some resale ones appearing on ticketmaster.se now. They're available for nearly all of the shows and I spotted 4 together for the Saturday afternoon show.

Given tickets are relatively get-hold-of-able this year (Eurovision in Sweden??), I wonder if many really are boycotting...

I got my tickets for Liverpool on a resale a month before the event. Was easy.

You tend to pre-book hotel as soon as the dates go are announced, then get tickets. Otherwise you can't get a hotel so the tickets are pointless

So demand now is MUCH less than when tickets initially went on sale and people aren't looking out for tickets because publicity about the resale is much less.

RunningAndSinging · 10/04/2024 22:06

I have been watching live performances from the London Eurovision party. Musti (Belgium) was having problems, Italy and France were good. Not convinced by Baby Lasagne’s (Croatia) live performance sadly. Nemo (Switzerland) did ok at the Spanish party.

I offered our spares to an acquaintance who lives in Malmo but they declined so will be putting them on Resale on Ticketmaster over the weekend. Fingers crossed someone wants them.

Hotel (in Copenhagen) and flights were booked way back before Easyjet and Best Western had worked it out. We're old hands at this 😊 In fact we had fully refundable accommodation booked in Stockholm as well in case it was held there.

(Relatively) affordable accommodation is available in Malmo now which it wasn't when we first looked which also made me wonder about a boycott.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 17/04/2024 08:41

So my bestie (who I'm going with) and I got together and did a full review. We also selected our qualifiers and non-qualifiers (our choices, not predictions). We didn't always agree but we both only had four going through from the first SF.

SF2 is choc-full of solo women so they might need to re-think the SF draws and bring type of artist in as a criterion. I only had nine going through.

All in all, it's really not a vintage year is it?

I can see the appeal of Croatia now but I don't know if it will get the jury vote. If I was doing each-way bets, it would be Italy, Switzerland and Croatia, not necessarily in that order.

(We've also changed our accommodation so we're now having two nights in Malmo and one in Copenhagen for less than our original booking in Copenhagen 🤷‍♀️)

The 68th Eurovision Song Contest introduces a change in how the Grand Final running order is decided. Artists can draw a performance in the First Half, in the Second Half, or there's now a brand-new third option!

In March it was revealed that some major changes would be introduced in Malmö to make the Eurovision Song Contest even more exciting. Following the announcement of the “Big 5” performing their songs in full in the Semi-Finals and that fans can vote as soon as the first artist takes to the stage in the Grand Final, we now have another big change to reveal!

In recent years, the qualifying countries from the Semi-Finals and the Big 5 have chosen which half of the Grand Final they will perform at random. The producers of the show then decided where in the First Half (songs 1 to 13) or Second Half (songs 14 to 26) of the Grand Final those acts would perform.

This year a new “Producer’s Choice” category will be introduced.

Host broadcaster SVT has revealed that 25 of the 26 artists in the Grand Final (Sweden has already drawn position 1) will be able to pick First Half, Second Half or Producer’s Choice in a random draw.

This means that if an artist pulls out Producer’s Choice in the random draw – the show producers will be able to place that song anywhere in either the First or the Second Half of the running order.

The change means there will now be 6 places to pick in the First Half of the running order, 6 places that can be chosen in the Second Half and 13 Producer’s Choice places.

The reason for the change is to give producers of the show even more of an opportunity to make all songs in the Grand Final stand out and create the most exciting running order possible.

Christer Björkman, this year’s Contest Producer, explains more about the reasons for the change:

“It's all about creating the best TV show possible and giving all artists a chance to shine. In previous years, with just the First Half and Second Half draws you might find many ballads ended up in the same part of the show or many favourites were drawn to perform in the same half. Adding the flexibility of Producer’s Choice gives me the ability to create an even better flow of different tempos and an even more thrilling Grand Final.”

The Big 5 will be picking either First Half, Second Half or Producer’s Choice after their second Rehearsal on Saturday 4 May, live during a Reddit AMA.

Then each of the 10 qualifiers from the First Semi-Final on Tuesday 7 May will draw one of those three options from the bowl immediately after the show LIVE on the Official Eurovision Song Contest TikTok channel.

The 10 qualifying artists from the Second Semi-Final will draw from the remaining options live on TikTok after the show finishes on Thursday 9 May.
When all the 25 options are chosen, producers will compile the running order for the Grand Final of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in the early hours of Friday 10 May. It will then be revealed on the Contest’s website and social media channels.

The last time we saw such a change to how the running order was determined, we can again look to Malmö – in 2013.

Before 2013, the running order of the Grand Final had been decided via a random draw. But in 2013, host broadcaster SVT instigated a change in the process, with a view to creating a more entertaining evening of television for viewers watching at home.

The alteration to the running order draw meant that artists could draw a performance in either the First Half of the Grand Final or the Second Half, with producers of the show then working to compile a running order that they deemed to be the most exciting for viewers, separating songs in similar genres, for example. A producer-led running order also enabled logistics involving staging, lighting and props to be taken into consideration.

This format has remained in place every year since, with the introduction of the Producer's Choice element in 2024 the first major change in over a decade.
