Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

But presumably they divorced for a reason. His ex could have the ick and not want him back or she could be a serial cheat and he was sick of her behaviour. Divorced couples don't just erase their history because a new partner ends the relationship (she wasn't the OW, he was divorced when they met) and suddenly get on again - especially in the early sixties when divorce was A BIG THING.

This is very complex for CTM. I assume in fact he just walked back in and said ‘darling, shall we try again’? And all was good.

But, but what if he never put the bins out?
I'm sure in Trixie's head it was terribly logical but she didn't let him get a word in edge ways to say well actually my ex wife is now married to someone else or she has a restraining order against me so I can't get within 100 yards of her let alone move back in.

It's where the show let's itself down -someone should spot the visible from space plot holes and find a way to make them a little more believable.

I’ve just had a look and living kidney donation began in the UK in 1960, so it might have been possible, but I’m not sure how common it would have been by 1969, especially for someone so sick. He would have been a poor candidate for any sort of surgery given he was already in heart failure. I suspect they might not attempt it even today.

But they could have just used a bit of poetic licence. We'd have accepted it 😊

Bunionbabe · 04/03/2024 19:24

I want to know how come Trixie's eyeliner and mascara stayed intact despite bring drenched in amniotic fluid. Is Matthew coming back then? He said 4 or 5 months in NY.

I think the gossip said he isn't in the next series but Trixie is.

Plus Esther (May’s mother) spoke perfect English the last few times we saw her

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2024 19:36

Love the expression on the church lady's face when she was handing out the Parkin.

Dr Turner could have performed it in his surgery, and added in a new heart as a bonus, saying ‘I’ve been reading about some very promising research from South Africa and there’s something I’d like to try out’.

That was very good.

Did you catch what the other cake was? I heard it as 'torte' (e not silent), but can't find a Jamaican cake of that name. Was it toto (spiced coconut cake)?

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2024 20:18

I can't imagine a high Anglican Church in the 60's hosting a Pentecostal church.

And working for an English army family, she'd have had to speak English.

GoodCoffeeEveryMorning · 04/03/2024 21:01

That was more like the CTM of olden times. Pathos, history, strong women, good stories.

But, for once, I was hoping Dr Turner would do his St Turner act and discover a cure for Bright's Disease.

LimberlostLark · 04/03/2024 21:23

Look, I know I keep banging on about this but The Dentist was the best match for Trixie

Being back Mr Dentist!

Ahahahaha! We kick off if they use curtain fabric a couple of years before it was actually on sale 🤣

Summerrabbit · 04/03/2024 22:50

I too thought this episode was too rushed, too neatly pulled together & pretty hammy acting wise. I agree it’s probably the best of a bad bunch though.
Btw @MadeOfAllWork your proposed breakdown of the Miss Higgins story arc made me chuckle:

Perhaps a letter arriving from India asking if she was the Miss Higgins that was in that certain place at a certain time.
Then meeting him spending time with him and a third episode of him dying.

I don’t know why I find it funny as I agree with you it’s just funny to see it broken down.

To be perfectly honest, I’ve never warmed to her character. I find her unlikeable.
Hated it when she used to keep calling patients ‘sweetie’ 😬

I hated Lucile calling everyone "Precious"

AnImaginaryCat · 04/03/2024 22:57

Id have like more of the Miss Higgins and Victor story. It was so rushed. I mean I want to know when Miss Higgins told Dr Turner she was Victor's mother! When she was looking up centres of excellence he didn't know then after his death he didn't seen least bit surprised when she mentioned being there for Victor's first and last breath.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2024 22:57

So Matthew treats Trixie absolutely appallingly, lies to her, and then buggers off to New York with no notice. Refuses to get a job as a lawyer. Etc. Now they are best buddies again and she's going out to join him? Can you imagine the response to that on the relationship board!

You certainly did…did you keep your hat on? Do tell.

Oops, quoted the wrong post, that was meant for misshiggins

Edited

My hat? When my son was conceived do you mean? I tried, but we did things that would make a lobster blush and it fell off. Wink

OnceUponATeabreak · 05/03/2024 09:04

I definitely have a new favourite from this series - Nurse Highland. I think she is a credibly drawn character who has been excellently acted throughout.

To me, Joyce is emerging as one of the future no-nonsense 70s women (mums, neighbours, aunties etc) that I remember. Nancy is also definitely up there for that, but somehow Joyce is more modern than Nancy, more considered, more sure of herself but without being arrogant. A bit like Valerie was, for her time/stage of the earlier 60s in the show.

catwithflowers · 05/03/2024 09:17

A good episode and all the more poignant for me as my dad has CKD (although he is in his eighties and has a whole host of other medical issues besides). ☹️

JSMill · 05/03/2024 09:42

Is anyone else uncomfortable with the storyline about May's mother? It's almost like the Turners were pleased she'd lost her job and gone back on the streets.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2024 09:53

@JSMill I think they were, yes.

Of course he knew - this is the great Dr T we're talking about. She didn't need to tell him - he worked it out for himself with his superhuman empathy.😁
