Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

I think to make way for the Baftas

I think Matthew will go off to South Africa and do something shady and make his fortune again there. He will be mentioned in passing until Helen George leaves the show and goes to join him. Or if she stays he will end up crushed in a mining accident and Jonty will never be mentioned again. He will go to live with Fiona's parents.

I ended up switching it off before the end last night. I got too annoyed at the point Sister Monica Joan was giving platitudes to a teenager football hopeful under a bridge. On top of Dr Turner attending the consultant appointment with the debt collector and explaining all the details. The Debt Collector who was looking after her ill father and taking care of lots of kids, plus about to have her 5th grandchild and seemed to go from in occasional pain to walking with a stick and being frailer than frail in about 2 days from diagnosis.
I think I've reached the end with CTM

DD and I were really laughing at that. She aged about 40 years and became unbelievably frail in a matter of what must have been days or weeks at most. Although I sometimes think time works differently on CTM. For some characters months appear to pass in an episode (Cyril's qualification as a SW, for example), and for others just days. There must have been quite a long period in this episode I guess, as the students took and passed their exams during it, but for some including Deirdre and her baby, not much time seemed to have gone by.

I wish we could do some kind of poll on here to predict Matthew’s exit storyline. Despite a PP saying it’s not permanent, and the door is still open to him if he wants/needs to come back, but I’m not convinced.

So: the choices are (feel free to add your own contribution)
We can check back & see who was correct.

Dies doing something heroic (like rescuing a child from a burning building) child is saved but he is trapped.

Dies in an accident (non heroic)

Decides to end it all

He & Trixie separate

He & Trixie separate & he decides to go to South Africa or Australia to seek his fortune

He & Trixie separate, he goes to Jamaica and randomly bumps into Lucille and they fall madly in love (thus tying up her storyline)

Terminal illness

Any others? I’m going with the first one.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/02/2024 14:01

I'm on for prison for fraud... most likely unwittingly.

RosaMoline · 12/02/2024 14:03

Here’s another one - he ends up owing money to some seriously dodgy people (think Eastend villains) and is ‘offed’ by one of their henchmen.

I thought Sheila might have been a bit more involved in the story of the 2 abandoned children. It's kind of her area of expertise.

Sheila was more concerned that the other children were about to arrive for choir, than she was about the abandoned child actors.

Matthew could do the £10 pom. Jonty goes to his grandmother because Trixie cannot look after him alone and work, then he will go to boarding school to explain his absence.
Matthew will make his fortune and send for them.(allows a return if needed)
Cyril will develop a thing for the new midwife and be torn apart with guilt due to his faith, cue the nuns coming in to council him.

medicalmysterymachine · 12/02/2024 14:32

Just wondering exactly how sweaty Matthew would look on his first night in prison...

Oooh this is an excellent suggestion. Can really see this working. Trixie's friend Sir Ralph or whoever he is can help fight to clear Matthew's name (could take years).

Actually, why can't Matthew take a job with Sir whoever he is that Trixie got him a foot in the door with? Surely Matthew knows it's all about contacts and so on, who you went to boarding school with etc.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/02/2024 14:51

She's hurt his manly pride.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/02/2024 15:06

Mathew is being made to look ridiculously thick for a lawyer.

The two little boys were very sweet I thought, the older one did a convincing job of being very bewildered (better actor than a lot of the adults tbh!)

I assumed the older boy must have had an Irish accent which is why they guessed an Irish link.

OnceUponATeabreak · 12/02/2024 15:09

What manly pride? Thought Trixie was in charge! Smile

kazzaD66 · 12/02/2024 15:11

Both Matthew and Trixie have been made to look ridiculous by this series' storylines. They've clearly pissed off the writers massively Hmm

Katherineryan1986 · 12/02/2024 15:33

I still think Cyril is too old to be a suitor for one of the students, gives me the ick rather (yes, i know there are plenty of successful relationships with big age gaps).

I think Matthew will get involved in some sort of get rich quick scheme and lose even more than he has already.

I would have thought that even though he lost his salary from the Board, that his mother would have given him an allowance.

JSMill · 12/02/2024 15:52

How many episodes are left in this series?

Trixie decides the latest get rich quick scheme (the preview of the next episode mentioned something about a new investment) is the final straw and they part company. Matthew goes to live with his mother, taking Jonty with him.

Yes it’s a real character change for Trixie. I can’t help wondering why. Matthew I sort of understand. He’s not been there that long and I don’t think the actor has had a great reaction. But Trixie - they’ve just butchered her character I think.

Just catching up. Glad to see Poplar still had an actual Anglican vicar!

How does St Turner find time to accompany patients to appointments.

In between discovering the damage caused by Thalidomide, his forward thinking on gay relationships and mental health plus his amazing ability to connect varying symptoms to a Poplar wide rare disease outbreak, he also invented a time machine. YAY!

We never had such problems with Sing Hosanna when I was at Sunday School

Neither did we. But we never tried to sing it in a round!

The Roman's knew Asbestos made you ill. I know Cape Asbestos pulled out of the UK ver suddenly - I think that was the early 70s. But people did think some forms were safer than others. And it was still in cat brakes in the 80s. (When I briefly worked in the Asbestos removal industry, and it was widely known how dangerous it was - but it was still in a frightening number of places BBC, investment Banks as well as schools etc).

It's still in lots and lots of buildings. My understanding is that it was safe unless removed (which must be done by a specialist).
