"It's still in lots and lots of buildings. My understanding is that it was safe unless removed (which must be done by a specialist)."
It depends how it is in buildings.
If in boards or cement then it's safe unless disturbed. But in brakes it was being burnt as part of the action of braking. And in other cases asbestos was used as a fabric or even a blown material.
Or even WW II was woven into fabric, used in uniforms which was to resist fire. But in working in factories making those uniforms possibly caused the deaths of my Aunt and Grandfather years later (deaths just blamed on their smoking, but the effect is greater is combined with Asbestos exposure).

I work in a school that still has asbestos, so long as we know where is it and don’t disturb it then it’s fine.
I did hear of a teacher who died because the display board in the school were asbestos and years of putting up displays with pins and staples killed her.

Did he say why Nonnatus house wasn't signed over to the order?

dollybird · 13/02/2024 07:44

DH's dad and uncle both died of mesothelioma. They were both electricians. Two sisters both losing their husband within 18 months of each other. It's an awful disease 😔

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 13/02/2024 07:46

Ahh that’s so sad.

shearwater2 · 13/02/2024 07:50

It depends on the type of asbestos too- I did a case on it once. Crocidolite (blue stuff) is the really nasty one. Then then there is the white stuff in old Artex you can just leave there (remove at your peril).

PuttingDownRoots · 13/02/2024 07:54

We had some asbestos i our attic when we moved a couple of years ago. The council gave us special bags, told us not to break the slabs, wear masks and gloves and bring it to the recycling centre. It was two squares, about 50cm by 50cm each, 8cm thick... out water tank insulation.

The Roman's knew Asbestos made you ill. I know Cape Asbestos pulled out of the UK ver suddenly - I think that was the early 70s. But people did think some forms were safer than others. And it was still in cat brakes in the 80s. (When I briefly worked in the Asbestos removal industry, and it was widely known how dangerous it was - but it was still in a frightening number of places BBC, investment Banks as well as schools etc).

they also knew Mercury and Lead made you ill yet the NHS are still pushing funding amalgam filings and dental professionals have to work with it. absolute madness

No.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/02/2024 08:56

My school was only built in 1970, and then closed early due the summer in 1987 to have the asbestos removed .

I was doing asbestos surveys on relativity new buildings as part of my job in the early 2000s.

A friend of mine died of mesothelioma 2 years ago.

Someone having asbestos related cancer on 1969 was not at all unrealistic!

InMySpareTime · 13/02/2024 09:06

I think it's the speed of diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma that was unrealistic. Even nowadays it would take at least weeks to schedule a scan, get a biopsy, identify the cancer type and diagnose mesothelioma. Especially when she wasn't actually working directly with asbestos so they weren't even looking for that type of cancer.

Quitelikeacatslife · 12/02/2024 00:16

Didn't you think it a bit off saint turner reading out debt collector lady terminal results to miss Higgins ?

Yes, I was reflecting on medical confidentiality at that point. But I would hope she's signed some sort of confidentiality agreement, after all she can sit and read the patients' records all day if she wants to.

Flamme · 13/02/2024 09:23

My money's on Matthew going into some venture abroad and telling Trixie that he has to do it on his own for some obscurely noble reason.

Isn't it about time she went for some sort of promotion anyway?

I figured they found it reasonably quickly because her father had just died of a lung illness presumably the same one?

InMySpareTime · 13/02/2024 09:42

No, Dr T seemed baffled when he asked about her previous work, as if he had seen the mesothelioma diagnosis and couldn't work out how she had it. He also didn't know that her dad used to work at the roofing factory.

I reckon Matthew will be written out by going to prison for some kind of financial crime

I think Matthew will be the patsy for whatever 'get rich quick' scheme he's been stupid enough to join.
Gets fitted up and sent to jail. Released on appeal.

Trinity65 · 13/02/2024 11:45

I think Cyril will make a good Social Worker but agree how it was so rushed.

Personally I am glad it was Lucille (though I have nothing against the character) who left and not Cyril.

Trinity65 · 13/02/2024 11:48

I have known people who dealt with Asbesto's

One I knew in the mid 80s and he was employed to remove Asbestos from C&A
Another, the Dad of a friend, had worked with asbestos and suffered in later life, dying quite young.

In 2007 my youngest DCs school was found to have asbestos so they were immediately shipped out to neighbouring schools and a community centre or the library whilst the school closed for the stuff to be removed.

VivaDixie · 13/02/2024 12:39

Watching the asbestos story unfold made me so sad. This is exactly what happened to the DM of a friend of mine. Her dad worked with asbestos in the 50s, used to come home every night in his overalls and gave friend's DM (then a little girl) a cuddle before bedtime. The DM died of mesothelioma about 5 years ago. Sad

I also think sweaty Matthew will get involved in a pyramid scheme, then get done for fraud and sent to prison. Paving the way for his potential return (early release for good behaviour - he is St Matthew after all).

I hadn't read this new thread before watching Sunday's CTM and I was already waiting for Phyllis to call someone 'lass' Grin I also wondered whether the mute students would be offered a job at Nonnatus. The Radio Times article linked above only made mention of 'two' new midwives which means that the BBC obvs can't afford to pay the mute students. Why bother casting them? I feel for those two actors!

VivaDixie · 13/02/2024 12:47

Oh and Trixie's wide eyed spoiled little face when she realised she wasn't getting her 'Barbican Flat'. Hmm

I agree that Helen George must have had a big falling out with Heidi Thomas as HT has turned Trixie into a caricature of herself!

I hadn't heard about amalgam fillings before. I have just googled them and I am shocked. I can't believe dentist are still regularly putting mercury into peoples mouths. I am lucky enough not to have any fillings, but pretty much everyone I know my age and older have these silver fillings... Shock

LimberlostLark · 13/02/2024 13:27

This! Why not just have 2 student midwives, rather than have them trailed about by the shadow two that never speak...

GoodCoffeeEveryMorning · 13/02/2024 14:29

I want to know how the non-speaking students got their exam results before the other two, even though Sister Julienne was given 4 identical envelopes by the postman, and those two were nowhere to be seen until they appeared from the arches with their results in their hands.

Also slightly awkward that sister Julienne offered jobs to speaking pupil midwives but not to the silent ones!
