EE writers clearly fancied a young character with a disability who is also a drug dealer and jacks eldest fit the bill.
At least she spoke French. Unlike Gina and Anna who were born in Spain and ( presumably) went to school there and they haven't spoken a word of Spanish and have London accents.

Karen was never really a baddie, just a bit rough. She actually got worse with time when she ran away with Phil's money. It was even more out of character for Mitch.
