I feel Freddie would be posher

AppropriateAdult · 06/10/2023 16:16

I thought the trailer looked terrible...

Floralnomad · 06/10/2023 17:12

We love Frasier and we aren’t going to watch it because it’s ridiculous and I really dislike Nicholas Lyndhurst as an actor . Also how realistic is it that Freddie , with parents like he has , and how he was as a child / teen in the original show would end up as a regular fire fighter . It’s just utter tosh .

Wow really? I think he's an exquisite actor. There's absolutely no similarity between Rodney Trotter and Gary Sparrow! Which is usually a sign of a fantastic actor

SquirrelFeeder · 06/10/2023 17:18

My heart breaks for Nicholas Lyndhurts the person though. Losing his only child. I cannot even attempt to imagine 💔

Not necessarily. His grandfather was a cop. And it has long since been suggested that Freddie was going to be more like Martin which was going to cause conflict of its own.

CoolShoeshine · 06/10/2023 17:42

I’ll watch the series because I love the show and Frasier seems just the same in the trailer. I’m really not sure about Nicholas Lyndhurst, he’ll always be Rodney to me and he doesn’t seem the right fit somehow but maybe it will be unexpectedly good.
i was expecting Freddie to be posh, a younger version of Niles so am a bit disappointed but maybe that would have been too obvious.
Seriously hoping for some cameos from other Frasier and possibly Cheers characters.

PuppyMonkey · 06/10/2023 17:45

More like Marty - but good at spelling, obviously.Grin

IKnowNothingAboutTrees · 06/10/2023 17:51

I presume with Freddie, they are trying to re-create the contrast the boys had with Martin, ie the straight talking ex cop and the spoilt neurotic kids

MariaVT65 · 06/10/2023 18:06

I’ll watch it, mainly for the cameos from Lilith and Roz. It’s a real shame Daphne and Niles aren’t in it! (I’ve met Jane Leeves and she’s lovely)

paranoidnamechanger · 06/10/2023 18:09

I’m looking forward to it and will be signing up again to Paramount + just to watch it, but I know it’s unlikely to match the old stuff. Nicholas Lyndhurst I’ve always enjoyed watching, and him being in this intrigues me!

Oh you lucky thing! May I ask how you came to meet her? She's a fab actress

BeginningToLookALotLike · 06/10/2023 18:16

I haven't been getting my hopes up too high but I enjoyed the trailer. It was like a cross between Cheers and Frasier. I was rather hoping that Freddie would still be a Goth, though.

I went on holiday to LA and saw a taping of another show she was in. She invited my friend and I onto set afterwards :)

@MariaVT65 If you say that you got on the set of Hot In Cleveland I will be so JEALOUS.

Yes Hot in Cleveland! (Was great to meet Betty as well obvs!)

Think some of it was written by Joe Keenan who also did some Frasier.

Each to their own , I have watched the odd Only Fools but I can’t watch anything else he’s in , no idea who Gary Sparrow is . I really liked New Tricks but despite several attempts over the years I can’t watch past the first episode he appears in .

topnoddy · 06/10/2023 18:45

It's never a good idea to bring back programmes after so long is it

Nonplusultra · 06/10/2023 18:46

I’m on the fence. I loved the original but some of it hasn’t aged well so it would be nice to have a modern take. But Niles and Daphne were always my favourites and I can’t imagine it without them. And it was a series that ended so well.

MariaVT65 · 06/10/2023 18:48

I thought any episode with Lilith was hilarious so I hope she’s done justice in this!

SquirrelFeeder · 06/10/2023 21:04

@Floralnomad Gary sparrow was the main character in Goodnight Sweetheart. He went back to wartime London and lead a double life. Fantastic series that was surprisingly historically accurate.

A lot of middle class people didn't seem to 'get' Only Fools. It did require the viewer to be quite down to earth! I loved it. They managed to merge serious issues with comedy, beautifully. I've still never laughed as much as I did all them years ago when those inflatable dolls inflated themselves in their living room! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Deadringer · 06/10/2023 21:44

I haven't seen the trailer yet, I love Frasiar but my expectations for this are very low. I agree that Freddie would be posh and probably an academic of some kind. He was very indoorsy as a boy with loads of allergies, not remotely strong or fit, not a daring do firefighter type at all. A doctor or lawyer or perhaps a teacher might have been a more believable role for him if they wanted him to have a 'normal' job. I think Lyndhurst is a really strange choice too, i never really rated him as an actor, but then I hated Goodnight Sweetheart, I thought it was dire.

It’s on Apple TV.

Fifireee · 07/10/2023 03:51

I know someone whose parents were both at Cambridge and who had academic careers and he became a plumber. I’ll watch it it looks interesting. I’m pleased Nicholas Lyndhurst is in it he deserves some good luck.

Lecc · 07/10/2023 05:28

Middle class people can't 'get' Only Fools and Horses - you are talking utter tosh!!
