I'm probably about to jinx people here but, based on what we've seen so far, my own bespoke finalists would be:

Ellie
Angela Rippon
Annabel
Nigel

I'd also like Amanda, Angela Scanlon and Krishnan to go far into the competition. Eddie has got the charisma and some potential but Karen is failing to harness it.

However, I think the actual finalists are nailed on to be:

Layton
Bobby
Nigel
Ellie

It's great seeing ProNikita unleashed but it's going to be fatal for anyone to land up in the dance-off against Layton. It will actually be a good thing if he tops the leaderboard every week because that's the safest way to avoid him obliterating the chances of everyone who has a bit of a blip.

But that won't save him if the public don't vote for him.
Ashley Roberts frequently topped the leader board but was just as frequently in the dance off.

OccasionalHope · 01/10/2023 15:00

I expected Bobby to mop up the votes but unfortunately the actual dancing is really not very good yet. So I’m not sure if he will win now.

I do think Layton is virtually guaranteed to win any dance off.

EsmaCannonball · 01/10/2023 15:07

It's not that I think that topping the leaderboard will guarantee Layton avoids the dance-off, just that that's the best bet of him avoiding it.

What I love about Angela Rippon's dancing is that, even if she doesn't quite have the physicality to pull off the moves, you can see that her mind knows exactly how the moves should be done. She has a dancer's instincts and puts in little touches and flourishes which are reminiscent of the proper latin and ballroom dances of the Come Dancing era. Plus she's like someone who would play Cary Grant's mother in a Hitchcock film. I just love it.

EvilRingahBitch · 01/10/2023 15:52

Ashley (who, lest we forget, was the dance-element judge on Dancing on Ice before she did Strictly) didn't hit the dance off until week 10, after which she was in for the next 3 weeks until the final.

EvilRingahBitch · 01/10/2023 15:56

I think Layton will have more of a fan base than Ashley though. I suspect that she was bottom of the voting almost every week, whereas I think there will be segments of the SCD voting population who'll pick up their phones for Layton.

xsquared · 01/10/2023 15:57

It must be hard for Layton not to takeover as the teacher in the partnership. Nikita does seem to be extra strict with him, which is a good thing.

Maireas · 01/10/2023 16:02

I think Eddie would do better with Katya or Nancy.

MavisMcMinty · 01/10/2023 14:24

I seem to be alone in thinking Angela Rippon isn’t much fun to watch. She seems to get 2 extra points from each judge just for being old. Last night’s awful costume with the padded shoulder completely obscured her top line, and made her look hunch-shouldered. That she and Annabel got the same judges’ score last week for vastly differently-abled cha chas is incomprehensible to me.

Edited

I agree. She's being very over marked/over praised. I know she's great for her age, but it still feels a bit much.

Even Les is being over marked/praised compared to previous duffers. Ed Balls, who was there last night, never got half the positive comments Les is getting and he was far more entertaining.

I loved Layton's dance tonight but I will never vote for him. When I get my arse in gear I will be voting Amanda. Women Won't Wheesht

Me too re Amanda! I'm the Strictly correspondent for my feminist group, so I can tell them all when to vote for Amanda 😁

Does anyone else have more than one email registered with the BBC site?
I have 3 logins so 9 votes!

Yes judge Layton on technical prowess. But his technical prowess is at 95%, whereas Annabel or one of the Angelas is about 66% and total newbies like Krisnhan or Zara is about 20%. So he is going to score consistently highly every single week (because he can dance very well already).

He must be on Strictly as a profile-raising thing, I had never heard of him before he signed up but I am not a musical theatre following person. I can't see how you can take any satisfaction at all from doing very well in an activity you have been so highly trained in against complete beginners. It'd be like Annabel Croft entering "Strictly Squash" and then being shocked that she was doing really well against Bradley Walsh or something.

Strictly Squash... love that Smile

I find it incredible that Layton's on the show, but so far enjoying watching him and really like the pairing with Nikita. I think I'd only be annoyed if he actually won, which he won't, of course. Not a snowball's chance in hell.

Gothambutnotahamster · 01/10/2023 16:51

Just watched last night's & loved them all!

changenameforname · 01/10/2023 17:01

I've just stumbled across a fab male Argentine tango dancer dancing as a follower on instagram. His name is cristiancerezo and he's dancing with leodicocco. I'd love it if Layton and Prokita could channel a bit of that if they do Argentine tango! I'll put the link in the video thread.

I don't mind having one or two ringers, I'd find it really hard to watch a full series with no one with dance experience. It is good to see amazing performances like that, just as with Danny.. but agree you can't really compare against the non ringer celebs.

I 100% agree. I'd much rather watch Layton's routine than Les Grin he won't win so why does it matter, it's just great entertainment. That routine was bloody amazing!

Aquarius1234 · 01/10/2023 17:58

There's no comparison between Les Dennis this year and Tony Adams last year. Tony Adams doing the The Full Monty last year has got to be one of my all time Favourite entertaining funny dances, it had the entertainment factor. And the song/ music and the moves and everything.

Maireas · 01/10/2023 18:01

Tony was so entertaining and so funny. Les really can't move well at all.

Gothambutnotahamster · 01/10/2023 18:13

Les always looks uncomfortable in his own skin - not just dancing but also in the VT when he was at home with his family. That said, i still found him entertaining but wish he could relax a little & enjoy it!

I really did think they were all great & think it's the best group of celebrities they've had in a long time!

There's a huge difference between the level of dancing you'd be doing as Sky Masterson or Lord Farquaad (which NH performed on his knees) and what you'd do as Jamie/Billie Elliot/Seaweed in Hairspray/Young Michael in Thriller/in a Matthew Bourne. I don't think Nigel was teaching dance classes in his spare time either.

Nigel is obviously a bit of a ringer in the Denise van Outen mould - but Layton is another level. One is an actor/singer/dancer, the other is a dancer/actor/singer.

I'll enjoy watching Layton but I'll let his scores take him to the final without my help.

Agree. Nigel has showmanship and charisma but Layton's dance knowledge is another level.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2023 19:12

Nearly time. Hoping Les goes. He's just embarrassing.

catwithflowers · 01/10/2023 19:13

I have no idea why Les Dennis is even taking part. He must have seen the show and been aware of the standard of dancing, even the poorer contestants with no dance experience. He seems like a nice chap but he must have known before he agreed to the show that dancing isn't one of his strengths 🙈.

Or maybe he genuinely thought he would improve? Maybe he will? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Poor Michelle being dressed in gold foil.
