Does anyone else think that prior to filming, individual participants are told which primary attitude to take and can then evolve to be their own personalities once the drama is set up eg Laura - you are to emphasise your desire for the Chelsea thing and initially appear disappointed at your non-Chelsea groom. Ella - you are to be a hyper-hysterical type who wants sex. Nat - you are to be a bit more refined than your bride and find her distasteful following initial attraction. Georges - you are to go on and on about your love of fake tits and be rude to your bride’s sister. Sister - you are to be particularly hostile to the groom from the get-go. And so on.

Or do they just edit the stuff which naturally comes out of these peoples’ mouths to present these weirdly exaggerated and flawed characters to set up dramas for our amusement.

I’d fail miserably on this programme because I’m too polite and generally cautious to make a fuss or say unkind stuff with cameras on me. I’d just think it. Then say a very gentle version what I felt carefully in an ‘it’s me not you’ way so as not to hurt anyone’s feelings. Not good telly.

I mean - Peggy’s dad’s quick turn around from his bizarre bollocks comment to being perfectly fine about it all is a
perfect example of this. Dad - you’re to explode in horror but then move to however you really feel.

I think a lot of it is editing. When the best man's joke met with tumbleweeds it reminded me of this, Charlie Brooker's explanation of how reality tv works,

I think he knows it is dead in the water regardless. He’ll be looking to leave and Ella will vote vote vote to stay. Even though Ella knows Nath isn’t going to go along for the ride and put his feelings away in the fucket bucket, to leave in the first few weeks will not be on the agenda for them including the production team.

I suspect Ella has other reasons for being there. Like 80% of the others.

He clearly finds her overly sexualised demeanour really off putting (I mean who goes on an outdoor adventure day with a top pulled down so low it grazes their nipples? I cringed when they sat down after jumping in the cave pool to have a conversation, and she had oiled her boobs or something).

If he rejects her however, he is going to be absolutely slated as this having something to do with her being trans

By the way, Nath could well be there for other reasons too.

I believe that some will always think there is another reason for ‘not feeling it’ rather than it maybe just being a big clash of personalities, different expectations and opposing ideas of how folk might conduct themselves in public.

Yeah I think Nath is just doing the reality tv rounds and this is just another step along the way. If he ended up with someone he really liked that would be a bonus but they'd need to be career enhancing for him IMO.

Ella seems super naive and at the same time super performative. I don't think she knows who she is (I mean she as in transwomen, not she as in woman). When she was doing the whole 'I've dedicated my life to caring for my grandmother' spiel I was thinking, 'Well that £300 a month carers allowance didn't pay for you to completely reconstruct your body'. I thought then that there was something she/the tv company weren't telling us.

Nath seems to be suggesting that she's lied to the tv company and didn't tell them that she is/was a stripper. She did't seem in the least concerned about people knowing (+ she told him very quickly) so I assume she didn't tell them as she thought they might not have her on - trans stripper might not be a narrative they'd want to be appearing to promote. Although, my god, they can make anything into a sob story.

I don't really blame her for not telling them though - they're certainly not worrying about anyone's best interests from anything I've ever seen! I also don't know what Nath's problem is, I didn't get the impression that it was the fact that she was a stripper that was the issue, but the fact that she'd lied to production. I doubt production really give a shit - oh look sensationalist tv that we had no idea about so can't be blamed for! And she was obviously honest with Nath and told him pretty quickly so what's his issue? I don't think she fits his polished image he wants to portray - she looked like she might on the wedding day but after that it all fell apart very quickly.

I reckon the production team knew fine well about the stripping.

Nan story was for the feels. More folk will feel empathy and go squish for that than getting squishy about the possibility of 50s getting squished into tiny drawers that would sag on a Barbie doll.

The polish slid off quickly. Lying? Possibly. But I reckon the shine wore off and the reality bit of reality Tv kicked in - hard - when Ella was one on one.

Imagine doing subsequent Tv or magazine rounds with someone screaming about fannies and toes on camels?

It would get on your humps fairly quickly.

No amount of publicity would be worth that for a lot of folk.

Tittttay Georges would probably slot in well with that but not many others would.

And I reckon production had the boat on standby - not in case of backwash but potential backlash.

I’m still trying to reconcile the George’s from the Chloe Sims clip with the one we’ve got - did his brief from the prods just say be as puerile and immature as possible? It’s the same old thing we’ve been saying every other series, yes they can edit to make you come across a certain way and change the context of what you say, but they can’t change the words that come out of your mouth!
