I agree. It's punching down that is the issue here and also any other protected characteristic would be seen as absolutely no-go when it comes to taking the piss.
It wouldn't be okay to make comments/jokes about Nathaniel based on his skin colour, or Jay based on her disability. Imagine saying Jay had taken the place of someone with two arms - it's the same thing.
