Non-gory films that are genuinely terrifying

I love really scary, suspense-filled movies that make me scared to go upstairs on my own. I'm not a fan of slashers, body horror, bugs etc; I think some horror movies are just gross rather than scary. Anyone want to recommend any films with a real atmosphere, genuine menace etc without lots of blood and guts? I'll start:

The Others
Don't Look Now
Rosemary's Baby

Paranormal Activity
possum
halloween isn’t terrifying but has no blood

The Haunting - original version not the remake

MyBedIsMySpiritualHome · 17/09/2023 18:39

The ring.

I find the insidious ones fit that bill for me!

The woman in black, subtle scary film

Yes, I still can’t believe that this film is a 12

The Conjuring. Up there for me with The Others.

Greensleeves · 17/09/2023 18:42

I've seen all of these Grin I do think the original Woman in Black was much scarier than the Radcliffe remake though. I saw it as a child and had nightmares for years.

The strangers was really good and suspenseful - although I thought the end spoiled it a bit!

Funkyslippers · 17/09/2023 18:43

The Others & Orphan. Ok the 2nd one does have a bit of blood in it!

MonikerBing · 17/09/2023 18:44

I found the Babadook terrifying!

Downandoutmummy · 17/09/2023 18:44

Funny games (either version) terrifies me I wouldn’t say gory but there’s one bloody moment

Greensleeves · 17/09/2023 18:44

Ooh yeah, Orphan is great. Also liked the Babadook

The Orphan is good.

thisisthway · 17/09/2023 18:48

Hereditary
Slenderman
Paranormal Activity
Annabelle

I like the Conjuring films too

Wheredideveryonego · 17/09/2023 18:49

I haven't actually watched them but I believe the nun series fits the bill

OneFrenchEgg · 17/09/2023 18:50

Us - so scary

Ykn · 17/09/2023 18:50

Take Shelter

OneFrenchEgg · 17/09/2023 18:51

The Night House

ReeseWitherfork · 17/09/2023 18:52

Do you specifically want films? Only the Haunting of Hill House, the Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass on Netflix are all excellent TV shows that fit the bill I think. They’re not terrifying, but scary enough.

Do you mean the tv adaptation circa 1990's? if so I totally agree. I bought the DVD off Amazon and always watch it at Christmas, still gives me the jitters.
Don't get me started on the theatre production, talk about jump scares😯

thenightsky · 17/09/2023 18:53

The Ring.

Tulipvase · 17/09/2023 18:53

I watched the first nun film last night. Some good jumps but not sure it was scary. I recently enjoyed The popes exorcist, the end was a bit weird though. But again, not what I would call terrifying.

The ring and Paranormal activity scared me the first time I watched them.

The haunting in connecticut

confusedmum2023 · 17/09/2023 18:54

Insidious. It’s the only film that has properly terrified me. It’s the most scared I’ve ever been or seen my dh and we watch horror regularly. We tried to watch it one Halloween again and just couldn’t 🤣
