Non-gory films that are genuinely terrifying

I love really scary, suspense-filled movies that make me scared to go upstairs on my own. I'm not a fan of slashers, body horror, bugs etc; I think some horror movies are just gross rather than scary. Anyone want to recommend any films with a real atmosphere, genuine menace etc without lots of blood and guts? I'll start:

Rosemary's Baby

There's a Spanish film from the 90s - Tesis (thesis) - chilling and a few moments which will really make you jump. It's Alejandro Amenábar's first film. You'd probably need to get it second hand on DVD.

Salems Lot
The Fog
Invasion of the body snatchers

They really knew how to do genuinely scary films in the 70’s.

Rosemary's Baby

Both oldies, but genuinely terrifying without being gory.

Some other 70's classics--The Omen and Audrey Rose are great

I just watched Us the other night with DS, and it was proper creepy, although slightly gory. The Ring is great, so it The Others, as well as the original Candyman.

Cannot bring myself to watch Insideous though 😮

the Hollywood version is good but the original is very disturbing

I also hate slashers (the Scream films are about the limit for me) so supernatural, jump-out-of-your-skin scary is my thing.

The Disappeared. Modern day subtle horror.

The Changeling (George C Scott) scared the hell out of me when I was a teen! Still find it scary!

Also, Deliver Us from Evil with Eric Bana. I'm a longtime horror fan and that one scared the hell out of me. I don't normally even react to scares these days, but that movie...

Black Christmas (original 70s one, not the shitty remakes).
I watch it every Xmas, so scary.

Oh yes. Esp the Dutch version

The VVitch isn’t gory, it is disturbing and dark though.
Roman Polanski’s Repulsion is good as well as Rosemarys Baby.

I couldn't watch Shallow Grave all the way through. Just the sound effects of Christopher Eccleston at the graveside was enough to give me the screaming abdabs. Horrific.

Misery is one of my faves too

The Rite, with Sir Anthony Hopkins. Sort of bill that could have been ridiculous with anyone else in it, but AH makes it.
