Non-gory films that are genuinely terrifying

I love really scary, suspense-filled movies that make me scared to go upstairs on my own. I'm not a fan of slashers, body horror, bugs etc; I think some horror movies are just gross rather than scary. Anyone want to recommend any films with a real atmosphere, genuine menace etc without lots of blood and guts? I'll start:

The Others
Don't Look Now
Rosemary's Baby

Quite old but I like What lies Beneath and Gothica - very creepy

ExiledRoyal · 17/09/2023 19:33

Yep, Babadook for me, too. It's not just genuinely scary, but it's also very moving right at the end. A genuine meditation on grief. 10 stars!

The original Dutch version. Not the Hollywood remake.

Yes, absolutely.

Recent film on Netflix- Nocebo, not gory but scary and thought provoking

The Vanishing

This. As another PP said, the original Dutch version. So chilling.

It Follows

Archive 81 (Netflix series).

Not a film but From on Now Tv.

Snazzysausage · 17/09/2023 19:58

The original Halloween always gets me and the original The Fog gives me the willies. We live rurally,we get fog off the fens, there's not a lot of street lighting and it's quite eerie when there's a pea souper!

This is quite good OP.

Breaking the Waves isn’t scary but just incredibly bleak and depressing

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 17/09/2023 20:05

Oh yes the original The Fog, it's the music, the fog & the last 5 mins that always get me.
I can only watch it if there's someone else watching it with me.
Even then I might not always watch it.

Blair Witch
Them

Iwasafool · 17/09/2023 20:41

Race with the Devil scared me. It was a 70s film with Peter Fonda.

Paranormal Activity
possum
halloween isn’t terrifying but has no blood

Possum genuinely shat me up and I’m a hardened horror film fan.

Thank you. Put that on my list.

ohsuzannah · 17/09/2023 20:51

Definitely watching some of these!

Devilsmommy · 17/09/2023 20:51

@thenightsky I'm always on lookout for good horror movies, seen all the ones being posted though😞

ChickenRat · 17/09/2023 20:55

I love the Insidious franchise

The thing with paranormal activity is I find all the characters so annoying I end up cheering for the demon thingy, which rather reduces the impact in terms of scariness 😂

Just started watching Possum, it's good so far

Wintersgirl · 17/09/2023 20:59

confusedmum2023 · 17/09/2023 18:54

Insidious. It’s the only film that has properly terrified me. It’s the most scared I’ve ever been or seen my dh and we watch horror regularly. We tried to watch it one Halloween again and just couldn’t 🤣

Yes that film is so scary! The music on the opening credits is scary enough...
