Non-gory films that are genuinely terrifying

I love really scary, suspense-filled movies that make me scared to go upstairs on my own. I'm not a fan of slashers, body horror, bugs etc; I think some horror movies are just gross rather than scary. Anyone want to recommend any films with a real atmosphere, genuine menace etc without lots of blood and guts? I'll start:

The Others
Don't Look Now
Rosemary's Baby

Sinister, Insidious, and Eden Lake.

Do you specifically want films? Only the Haunting of Hill House, the Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass on Netflix are all excellent TV shows that fit the bill I think. They’re not terrifying, but scary enough.

I've seen and loved all of these! Definitely up for scary series as well, though they seem to be thinner on the ground.

The autopsy of Jane doe (though has a bit of blood)

Tulipvase · 17/09/2023 18:55

The Godfrey Parks episode of most haunted scared me lol. That and the fake programme in the 90s, about the haunted house, it was a whole evening and pretended to be real, Mr pipes I think.

Duel (1971), it gave me nightmares for years.

Torganer · 17/09/2023 18:58

Dark Water (the original version)
Shutter
In Memoriam
The Silent House

Host - the one that takes place on Zoom. Terrifying.

@Tulipvase I was at school when Mr pipes was on TV, had nightmares for years, no one told kids it was fake until seemingly years later.

archimedesconstant · 17/09/2023 19:06

I also love The Others

The Ring was really scary and creepy at the time, not watched it in years.
Get Out- a little bit of gore at the very end but just love the crazy storyline, so clever!
The Visit- a good, creepy one if you don’t mind the found footage style of filming

Tulipvase · 17/09/2023 19:07

@SilkySuky i think I was about 17 and was still scared. My boyfriend offered to buy me a bottle of whatever alcohol I was drinking if I would walk round the local graveyard after watching it, I didn’t get the booze.

Thebigblueballoon · 17/09/2023 19:07

Also, Get Out.

I haven't actually watched them but I believe the nun series fits the bill

Second nun is supposed to be shit. Loved the first one

CrossPurposes · 17/09/2023 19:12

The Innocents (1961) is brilliant.

I also second The Haunting (1963).

On TV, I really liked Marchlands and The Secret of Crickley Hall from the early teens.

The Watcher in the Woods, early 80s film made by Disney of all people!

I loved that !

BasiliskStare · 17/09/2023 19:17

I agree with @Theeyeballsinthesky - the original version of the Haunting . No gore. I watched it with my mother decades ago and we were so scared we had to go and lock the back door together. Genuinely creepy & scary but not a drop of blood.

The Vanishing

This was the one that popped into my head!

The original Dutch version. Not the Hollywood remake.

muddlingthrou · 17/09/2023 19:23

@DRS1970 - Eden lake is SO gory. It's basically torture porn 😟 I absolutely hate that film... one of the only times I've ever seriously considered walking out of the cinema.

Oh god yes!

Still look over my shoulder every time the wind rustles through the woods where I live

SilkySuky · 17/09/2023 19:29

@Tulipvase I was about 12, it was the talk of the school and one girls dad worked on the show and she very convincingly told everyone stories about weird stuff that happened to other crew that worked on the 'documentary'. Complete rubbish but I was genuinely terrified.
