Yes, I’d never heard of Hamza but he quickly became my favourite, with Helen Skelton (whose name I only vaguely recognised when it was announced) being my second choice. I also really liked that elegant viscountess Emma from a few years ago - but again, as someone with no interest in royals etc I hadn’t heard of her before.

So Eddie (whom I’m going to have to Google) could easily become a favourite for me!

Gothambutnotahamster · 06/08/2023 20:15

Me too @TennisWithDeborah

Ok if Layton has been hired by the real deal then he's obviously got some talent. But it will be interesting to see if his off stage presence is better than on, once he's settled in, as the self centred people never get that far, the public doesn't like them.

I also think it pisses the general public off when celebrities with EXTENSIVE dance experience like Debbie McGee and Ashley Roberts try to kid on that ballroom/Latin is so so different to any other sort of dancing, that they simply have no advantage at all, that they are actually at a disadvantage because they have to learn how to position their feet differently or something. It's treating the viewing public as fools as we can all see with our own eyes that they pick stuff up quicker and are not struggling with the basics as many of the complete non-dancers do.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 06/08/2023 20:46

Agree @GenieGenealogy being able to count to the beat and move on the count is massive advantage regardless of discipline

ThursdayLastWeek · 06/08/2023 20:49

Eddie Kadi is fairly regular on Fighting Talk and IIRC he’s pretty fun and funny.

I approve.

I agree too!

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 06/08/2023 21:30

I don’t want to lower the tone particularly, but a quick google tells me Eddie Kadi is quite firmly in the eye candy section.

I would like it to be a bit more serious. It’s a ballroom/whatever dance contest. I’m not interested in anyone’s dead granny, or council estate upbringing, or lack of dance training. I’m interested in…..

1 - a very very short intro (please, none of that weird ‘acting’),

2 - a three minute dance with no props unless it’s prop week,

3 - not much dry ice, I want to see legs and feet,

4 - minimal training videos, all that could be covered in ITT, and if they do show some, make sure it’s not the same footage,

5 - I don’t like all the theme weeks. I do actually like the armed forces ones they have had, but Halloween is too much and takes away from the magic of the dances,

6 - I like the judges to be a bit less silly. Cynthia Erivo was (for me) a breath of fresh air. She made all the other judges look like silly teenagers. I loved her style and really hope she gets a chance to judge again.

7 - now I’m on a roll, I also love the style of group dance where everyone is dressed differently and doing their own dance, instead of everyone doing the same. I don’t know if there’s a name for that style? Like for example there was a group dance set in a bar with a story going on between the two main dancers, some of the others were his friends and some were hers, and others were bystanders. Lovely stuff.

I agree with all of the above. Could I add:

  1. The broadcast volume of the audience clapping like tone-deaf seals to be lower than the volume of the music. I want to hear the music so I can see how the dancer is responding to it.
Lentilweaver · 06/08/2023 23:35

Please let Katya get someone decent and fiercely competitive. I guess Jovita will get whichever male is 70++

Gothambutnotahamster · 06/08/2023 23:53

Katya & Jovita need decent dancers (not ringers). That would make for a fierce competition!

magicalkitty · 07/08/2023 07:23

I like Halloween week.

I do think it's a bit much to have movies AND musicals week. Most musicals have now been made into films too, so I don't understands the point of having both. Plus musicals is always near the end and too close to the finals imo.

Maybe I picked on Halloween slightly unfairly

What I hate about Halloween is not that it's a theme or even that it's cheesy - it's that they all look so ugly in monster make up.

Call me shallow.

PuppyMonkey · 07/08/2023 08:41

Angela Scanlan just announced.

PuppyMonkey · 07/08/2023 08:42

Scanlon?

GrouchyKiwi · 07/08/2023 08:48

I am so glad that rumour was true. I love Angela Scanlon!

covetingthepreciousthings · 07/08/2023 09:02

Very pleased to see Angela Scanlons been announced, I think she'll be great.
I might be wrong but I think she's an Irish dancer so should have good rhythm?

Samcro · 07/08/2023 09:04

another good one

GenieGenealogy · 07/08/2023 09:28

Oh I love Angela Scanlon! So glad she's doing it.

FeedMeSantiago · 07/08/2023 09:49

I agree that separate Movies week and Musicals week is pointless. Too similar. I would prefer a combined movies and musicals week where Movies week is and then have a rotating theme where Musicals week is. The year Caroline Flack won they had a 'world' theme. Bhangra would be great too. They could also have a music genre/decade theme. E.g. 50s week.

I like Hallowe'en week. DH doesn't but I do enjoy the creativity of the hair, costumes and make up.

Pleased Angela Scanlon is doing Strictly.

I hadn’t heard of Angela S which probably means that she’ll be my favourite by week 4!!

She reminds me - physically - of Stacey Dooley a bit.

I like Halloween week because it feels like the start of the Christmas countdown and I am always awed by the talent of Vicky and Lisa’s teams. Dislike musicals week because I’m not a fan of the genre (although I like the films Grease, the Sound of Music and West Side Story) but I appreciate that many viewers are musicals-goers and will therefore enjoy that week.

MrsJamin · 07/08/2023 10:20

I love Angela Scanlon! She's a natural on tv - a bit like Ellie Taylor - just good fun and don't take themselves too seriously.

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 07/08/2023 10:25

@FeedMeSantiago a ‘decade week’ is a great idea! 1950s = any song that came out in that decade with the appropriate clothes. Is there much difference in clothing between 1950 and 1959 I wonder? There was a massive difference between 1970 and 1979 for example.
