Anyone watching this? I've watched all of them and am enjoying it. I loved Enid Blyton books as a child, especially the boarding school books. Although the series is different from the books, I still enjoy it. Lovely location.
I guess if they were true to the books, the "nice" characters would have to be snooty bullies. 😀
I like the storyline involving Mademoiselle Rougier and Irene and the secret room storyline. Also the Gwen/Ron storyline.

I always assumed first form = first year (which is year 7 in modern terms) so age 11. I don't see how they'd have time to work up through to the 6th form otherwise. But quite a few private schools do start age 13 for secondary.

I think they are setting up a revolving cast personally... so in a couple of years we will get a new First Form.

No; the last season is 6, I read on the webpage of the place it is filmed in Devon. I Google mapped it and it looks as beautiful as it does on screen.

I wondered if St Claire’s might follow too! And lol at the Chalet school, so many books, so much complexity, so many multiple births! As a child I was convinced you just somehow decided that you were going to have quads, triplets or twins! thought you maybe made your selection in hospital along with your meal choice!

PoliteOtter · 20/07/2024 16:43

Yes the Twins at St Clare’s were 13 I think (from the very dregs of my memory).

What about Trebizon?

Lol at the chalet school. I’d love that. You could also televise those comic sketches like the Three Mary’s.

And sorry what? Irene’s Dad marrying Mam’zelle? DuPont or Rougier?

SeaPink · 20/07/2024 17:23

What about the Naughtiest Girl?. I can't remember that much about it.

There's only one mamzelle in the tv prog. Maybe Rougier. They did the invisible pink chalk trick on her though

Looks like they are going to shoot a film of the Magic Faraway Tree. I used to absolutely love those books

Oh wow

I loved aunt Fanny. Moonface. Saucepan and silky

Dd has these. She is 7 and we have started to read them at bedside together

I may need to read them myself quickly

Oh yes! I’m getting muddled on which series is showing. It’s 5 at the moment then 6 - 7 for 2025 according to that article. I do hope they don’t ‘stretch’ the material too far…

Terloz · 20/07/2024 22:52

During the first couple of series of Malory towers my son and I watched the CBBC programme ‘Our boarding school’ (part of the ‘our school’ series) in parallel. It’s about Badminton School in Bristol. It was a good real life and modern contrast to Malory towers. The real dorms make Malory towers look like a luxury hotel. It’s still on iPlayer if it appeals to anyone.

I am really struggling with S5. I put it on and then wander off to wash up because I just don't care about the second form. Felicity is basically Darrell at 80% battery, which I suppose is her point!

I wish they'd stop chucking in outside characters. 3 episodes in and we've got the archaeologist or whatever, the acrobat and Jo's dad.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/08/2024 22:40

Jos dad was in the books. He reminded me of toad on toad hall

All big and pompous

He threw his money about / never said no to her - and was the big I am and thought it was funny jo was expelled from schools

Suzuki70 · 20/08/2024 23:16

He was but I don't recall him turning up in termtime to take her on jolly outings! It was start and end of term when other parents were around (plus collecting Jo - I think she got expelled?)

jay55 · 22/08/2024 12:43

Just caught up on series 5 on a train back from Cornwall, very fitting.

The circus thing happened in st Clare's didn't it, Carlotta, rather than Malory towers.

I hate the stupid archeologist storyline, the girls should have been sleuthing it all out alone.
And the continuation of flirtations with the local boys is insanity.

I do like the new matron though.

The fifth form disappearing is quite jarring.

Agree Jo's dad should be like mr toad, or mr Dursley all fat and bluster.

Would they really have had to run cross country in such unsuitable skirts?

Oor · 30/08/2024 20:10

I’m currently on series 4. I’m on the episode where mr parkers wife is in labour. Gwen is saying she’s the only other person in the school. Where on earth are all the other year groups? And isn’t there a matron per tower? And why is Darrell constantly being used as a substitute teacher. She’s now in charge of a load of 11 year olds on a school trip. I realise I’m overly invested in this 😂 if I was Darrell’s parent I would be very annoyed at forking out thousands for my child to be taught by only 2 teachers and then to be used as a childminder every 2 seconds 😆

I wanted to watch this after BF's many tales of his 1980s/1990s boarding school experience. He's given it a look as he read all the books way back. I'll have to sit down and binge to catch up.
Loved old Worst witch and of Harry Potter but would like to see normal boarding school life.
Boyfriend says real life residential schools were mostly very tough and often strayed into brutal, with tough learning curves. A huge posh hundreds of years old boys school in a nearby town had many similarities and vast differences to his. He reckons Mallory Towers is closer to a girls version of that school.

After hearing from a girl in our friends circle who was at a paid for residential one aged fifteen to eighteen, after being booted from comprehensive, it sounds more both more civilised and an potential series of Bitchfest conflicts! 8o😳
I still miss Tracey Beaker as well.

I read and enjoyed the Wishing Chair books. The far away tree was a bit freaky with illustrations of weird characters. Not my thing to tempt my subconscious with when I was getting night terrors in my second foster home...

You might enjoy the CBBC series ‘our boarding school’; it’s available on iPlayer.

More episodes of Series 5 are on iPlayer now.

EBearhug · 12/11/2024 16:07

Thank you, Carla.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/11/2024 16:08

2 a week on Mondays.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 12/11/2024 18:46

Really disappointed in the first two episodes of the rest of Series 5. Just the odd appearance of Darrell's peers - almost like a token gesture - and no Gwen at all. It absolutely loses something when she's not there. And I can't bear the Jo character in the second form - such a spoilt brat!
