For attending a funeral in Ireland: (generally speaking)

• If it's someone you know but aren't very close to (parent of a friend, acquaintance, ...), you have the option of going to the wake. Some people bring the deceased home for a viewing, some have it at the funeral home. But people pop in, pay their respect, drop off card/ sign the book. So you can fit that in when you aren't in work.
• If it's someone closer but not very close. It will depend a bit on your employer's discretion or you might be able to fit the mass or the cemetery or the after's.
• If it's someone really close (close family member, best friend, spouse), I would imagine most employers would allow leave on compassionate grounds.

But between the wake and the funeral, you generally get the chance to pay your respects in person (unless you live far away or abroad).

Tho guess it's different in Ireland and people know that's the norm
