As with last season of Mrs Maisel, it feels like it's just getting going and then it's over.

I thought the first episode was Lenny's farewell (as with Mei). Midge has got about 4 husbands to get through in the next 10 or 20 years, she hasn't really got time to be revisiting the thing with Lenny too!

I wonder if it will be a feature length episode? Dunno how they will fit it all in otherwise. The series feels disappointingly short!

There has to be, surely?! They can’t do justice to the rest of her life without it.

NoSquirrels · 23/05/2023 20:15

I think the writers will say they’ve already ‘wrapped up’ most of the storylines as far as they’re going to.

Midge will get her big break in the last episode, and that will be it, I reckon - and we probably won’t even really get to see that moment of triumph, it’ll be implied somehow.

I think they’ve ‘wrapped up’ or written the last already for pretty much everyone. We know that Midge is successful in her career, unlucky in love, falls out with Susie but then they (likely) reconcile after the roast where she filmed a tribute. We know that Susie becomes massively successful. We know that Joel never remarried and went to prison eventually for the mob stuff. We know about Esther and Ethan in adulthood. Rose and Abe, and Moishe and Shirley we don’t know very much about, I suppose.

I've just seen the last episode and loved it. I've loved the whole show from the beginning, the quality of the writing, the look of it, all so unique. Brilliant characters throughout, but Susie is my favourite. I'm going to miss this show.

greennotepad · 26/05/2023 08:24

Cried my eyes out at the last couple of scenes! Wonderful ending.

franke · 26/05/2023 10:14

@greennotepad I would have too if it hadn't been for Susie's hair 😂 (hope that's not a spoiler)

tribpot · 26/05/2023 11:59

Enjoyed that episode, although Midge's impromptu set on the show seemed too risqué for network TV in the early 60s? And really a little too niche to have got the laughs it was getting from the audience. But it was a farewell designed for us, the audience of her TV show, really.

Wonderful final scenes for all the parents, and Zelda. And a fantastic touch to end as it did, with the roles almost reversed between Midge and Susie.

Splattsagain · 26/05/2023 13:15

It was a lovely last episode, I'm going to miss seeing their stories continue.

gingercat02 · 26/05/2023 14:25

God I'm going to miss these people. That was epic!
Loved a last dash of Lennie.
Amazing, sad, happy and bloody funny. Loved it

Gooseysgirl · 26/05/2023 16:51

Loved it, but I'm so gutted it's all over! Lovely touch to give Lenny's daughter Kitty Bruce a mention in the credits! 🥰

Popuppilot · 26/05/2023 18:20

Really lovely enjoyed it loads. The two endings were great ❤️❤️❤️. I loved where Susie was at the end.

MIKE! MIKE! MIKE! Loved that bit cracked me up!!

2023usernameNew · 26/05/2023 20:10

@Popuppilot , what two endings?
Should I have watched the end of the credits?

Popuppilot · 26/05/2023 20:16

I meant the ending in the 60s and the one based later (without giving too much away) x

2023usernameNew · 26/05/2023 20:23

@Popuppilot oh, thanks! 😊

escapingthecity · 26/05/2023 21:40

I didn't love it tbh. Adored adored her routine, but it showed up how little we've actually seen her doing her stand up this series. I don't think the flash forwards have worked really.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 26/05/2023 22:19

Just watched the last episode. Will have to go back and start all over again. Loved it.

2023usernameNew · 27/05/2023 04:53

@escapingthecity , listened to Amy Sherman this week on a podcast and she said the network told them this would be the last season, it wasn’t her choice, apparently it’s a very expensive show to make.

I think, even though she said this gave them the chance to wrap it up, she wasn’t able to condense all she may have planned in her head in just one season.

The flash forwards felt very ‘bitty’ and disjointed to me.

I did tear up during her stand up on the Gordon show though. It reminded me what a delight the first few seasons were and felt we’ve gone through so much with her (and Susie).

BeginningToLookALotLike · 27/05/2023 08:00

I thought it was lovely. Good credits, too. I will miss it!

franke · 27/05/2023 13:45

I know nothing about how productions become so expensive, but the traffic jam scene when her parents were looking for a taxi really struck me - all those vintage cars and buses crammed into one place. And that was just one short scene.

tribpot · 27/05/2023 14:34

I can imagine the costumes alone would be extremely expensive, and then the venues as well - the clubs, the TV studio. I did like how they shot inside the TWA Hotel at JFK, that must have saved a few quid! https://www.twahotel.com (Although from what I recall it was somewhat shoehorned into the plot to have an excuse to film there).

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 27/05/2023 14:37

The clothes were exquisite. I did wonder how. Midge and Rose were able to afford them, but I was happy to suspend disbelief because I liked the series so much.

Oakdog · 27/05/2023 14:41

Really sad it's over and liked the ending. I now feel like I need to go and watch all the flash forward bits, and look for bits that I missed about all the other characters, and Midge's future life. I don't feel like I paid enough attention to the little details in them on first watch.

tribpot · 27/05/2023 14:42

Yes, I thought Rose came from money but Abe blew it all, and that's why they had to sell the apartment to Midge. But she surely can't have been making much dosh, even with child support from Joel. Midge is later going to discover that Susie is skimming her earnings to pay off the mob? So even less going into her pocket.

SapatSea · 27/05/2023 16:52

@tribpot IIRC Abe's original apartment was a perk of his Columbia Uni Professor job. They didn't own it so when he gave up his teaching they lost the apartment. I guess Abe's academic job was prestigious but not fabulously well paid they ran an expensive household ( all the designer clothes, maid etc.) Midge and her brother went to expensive private and prestigious schools... The apartment Midge "bought" that they now live in was her original pad with Joel. Moishe bought it for them as a wedding gift. She did a deal with Moishe to "buy it"eventually from him using the Shy Baldwin contract as a down payment/collaterol - although she was sacked from the Baldwin tour. I guess Moishe doesnt really take the money(?) I think Joel offered his own business for the Mob to skim in return not skimming Midge - hence the ire against Susie and Joel ending up in prison.

The routine was good! felt like the show was back on form. It's been a messy season. I disliked Midge this season and found her entitled parents very irritating.
Catskills was my favourite episode ever I think. What did you guys like best?

Popuppilot · 27/05/2023 18:32

I loved the start of the shy tour with all the soldiers. I bet that cost a few bob! And the episode with lovely hotel they stay in where she meets Lenny for a date and they go on a random late night tv show. Loved that.
