I watch it for the costumes and settings as that's one of my fav style eras. I felt so sorry for Joel 😢

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 19:38

I really wanted to love this - but I just didn’t ☹️ Hopefully this series will improve but it just felt like a bit of a pastiche.

JaneFondue · 15/04/2023 20:22

I liked S 1-3 of this. By S 4 Midge really started to annoy me with her spoilt "I am Daddy's little girl" attitude and her vanity. I love Susie and I would like a show about her instead. She does all the work, and Midge doesn't seem to have grown much since S 2.

Just watched S 5 Episode 1 and she seems to have an intriguing path, but it's just taking so long to get there.

I do like the fashions though, both men and women.

I think Joel's a PITA.

MissHavershamReturns · 16/04/2023 07:07

I thought episode 3 was slightly better, but again not loving the flash forward.

I think the difficulty with the Midge story arc all three episodes is that Midge had a rich emotional life in early series - getting over Joel, will they won’t they, striving to make it. Growing in independence by doing jobs. This just feels a bit flat - nothing really at stake for her, no friendships, no romantic life.

TollgateDebs · 16/04/2023 11:04

Always difficult to wrap up a story, but it is clear from E1 and E2 they are at least going to end the programme, probably using the writer link, which is how many in comedy got their break. The costumes in this season are already impressing and that two tone pink coat is a wow!

Newgirls · 16/04/2023 12:37

I like the Esther flash forward in that she’s a genius despite spending her childhood watching tv. She would need a therapist like the rest of the family. I thought it was well done

musicinspring1 · 16/04/2023 21:45

I am a huge Mrs Maisel fan and have just binge watched the current 3 episodes but although they are good they're not in the same 'wow' factor league as earlier ones and I can't put my finger on why.
I'm not loving the flash forwards - 3 episodes in and I can't see how they'll cover enough to fully explain what the flash forwards have revealed.
And (I don't want to spoil but this is a vague spoiler) but the 'twist/ reveal' in episode 3 felt so inevitable and obvious. Of course he fancied her. Maybe I'm just grumpy and want more Milo back ( I do love spotting all of ex Gilmore girls actors in this - there are quite a few !)

Hope it picks up its magic a bit more for me.

MissHavershamReturns · 17/04/2023 10:28

I think they made a mistake with starting the blizzard story after she was home. No peril and not very interesting watching her in bed. Should have canned the fast forwards. Would have been better to start with Mei in the clinic

ginghamstarfish · 17/04/2023 10:57

I liked the first 3 series, but she's not a very likable character (and not at all funny). Suzie is much more appealing, and the actor who plays Lenny Bruce is great. I'm really just watching now for the costumes and settings.

Popuppilot · 21/04/2023 11:17

What did everyone think of episode 4? The musical went on forever 😭

lovelypidgeon · 21/04/2023 11:31

I thought the 'flash forwards' were supposed to be Midge's imagination/bad dreams. I thought the first one (featuring her daughter) was when we saw her ill in bed and the second (about her son) was when her son was in her bed, so assumed it was a sort of dream sequence and supposed to show us how she feels torn between wanting to focus on her career and fear that she's not being a good enough mother and will screw up her relationships with her children.

I may well have got it wrong and/or been slightly projecting though as I was trying to watch with my teens who were talking non-stop

musicinspring1 · 21/04/2023 13:56

Oh @lovelypidgeon that's a really interesting take on it. I also watched the episodes distracted so might go back and re watch - I prefer your explanation!
@Popuppilot I agree !!!!!! A lot of waste management content in that episode! Not sure much else actually happened 🫠 we got a snippet of Susan at the end...

gingercat02 · 21/04/2023 14:16

Slow episode content wise but Suzie and Midge are in the shit with the mob!
What's the story with 'Susan' and Mrs Gordon Ford? Were they more than friends at college? Can Hedy get Midge on the Show?

escapingthecity · 21/04/2023 22:32

I loved the garbage musical! Did those kinds of shows really happen?

I like Midge's arc this series, trying a different route to where she wants to be, and finding out in ep4 that it wasn't going to be as easy as she'd hoped.

I love the parents in this series as ever - Moisge and Shirley's estrangement was hilarious.

I do agree about the flash forwards though. They don't feel quite right and the ageing make up on Rachel Brosnahan is terrible.

Lorelaiandrory · 22/04/2023 18:54

The musical reminded me of the Gilmore Girls seasons - when we had the endless Kurt musical. I fear this series is making the same mistakes as Seasons.

OhVicIveFallen · 25/04/2023 21:33

I like that they are making Nicky and Frank(?) a bit more sinister and mob like now. Who knew the mob used the garbage disposal industry to get rid of bodies?! I've just fallen down a google rabbit hole with that little nugget of information 😬

Turquoisestone · 26/04/2023 07:38

Random theory but does anyone here think Joel might die somehow in the course of Midge and Susie breaking ties with the mob? Whatever else you can say about him he’s been picking up the slack parenting wise but future Esther and Ethan definitely don’t seem to reflect that. It would also explain why Midge and Susie fell out. I know the flash forward talks about a 25 year friendship but maybe they were just keeping up appearances until Midge was a star and they could go their separate ways. It’s not really in keeping with the tone of the show but something big is going to have to happen to resolve this mob plot (at least I hope so - it’s been background for so long it’d be a shame if they fix it too easily) and Joel was there trying to fix things the last time Susie failed as a manager.

I was also wondering this but thank you for explaining in such detail!

JaneFondue · 26/04/2023 08:19

Feel like it's just a pastiche of scenes without any proper plot or script, with random characters popping in

Also annoyed by the way Midge somehow manages to flirt and get involved with every man she works with. Put your head down and do the work, girl!

if Joel dies, it will be completely against the tone of the show, but I find him so annoying that I would be happy for him to die. I think the bulk of the parenting is done by Zelda actually!

Currently, the only character I like are Susie and Rose.

2023usernameNew · 26/04/2023 13:13

I’m just going through the motions and not paying much attention (also forwarding musical scenes), sort of sticking to it out of loyalty and seeing how it ends.

No, the makers of the show have talked about doing the flash forwards for a while as they want to show Midge’s life in the future. They tried to work the flash forwards in during season 3 but couldn’t make it work so kept it for the final season.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 26/04/2023 15:44

I think the show was always going to go in this direction. When I think back over previous series to how Ethan and Esther are portrayed, they are often sitting and watching TV, or just sitting and not being interacted with, or being sent into another room.

The characters who have 'hit the big time', Gordon and Sophie, are selfish and egotistical and they have had to hide parts of their life to succeed. Lenny is more authentic but he cannot be relied upon in his personal life. Maybe this series is showing that Midge isn't the exception: she can't be all things to all people, because she wants so badly to succeed in her own way.

Newgirls · 27/04/2023 08:10

Maybe Joel and the kids might be at risk in some way but it’s not really the show to bump them off?

OhVicIveFallen · 27/04/2023 16:52

The actor who plays joel has mentioned having to wear aging makeup for the flash forwards so I don't think he dies in the 60s. He also said something else which is a massive spoiler and I'm surprised he got away with it!

Bang goes that theory then 😆 It did seem unlikely but I guess I’m hoping they do something real with the mob plot. So many of the shows subplots have either been forgotten or ended abruptly (Mei and the matchmakers being recent examples).
