Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

Who?
Zainib and Mobeen don't have a baby if that's what you mean

I don't know about up to date circumstances but at the time of filming they were struggling to conceive and the baby featured belonged to the host family.

That was a fantastic episode, the race up the steps and through the streets at the end and then the deathly quiet of the lift… Grin

I’m pleased for Zainib and Mobeen.

Me too.

BishopRock · 26/04/2023 22:10

Maybe next week Kevin and Claudia will run out of money.

orangelotus · 26/04/2023 22:12

thanks Purple. i was away fir a few weeks so missed quite a lot.

Aaaand……they’re all on the same bus again….🤦🏻‍♀️

I think Zainib and Mobeen got the luxury direct bus without the other contestants though? And managed to get to the checkpoint 11 hours early. I'm so pleased for them - and I hope the Winnebago worked for them! 🌹

NCTDN · 26/04/2023 22:21

Z&M took a different route with an overnight train didn't they?

It had lift music though! 😂

I never understand the running when it's not the final and its not an elimination round. Why waste your effort and look like an overly competitive twat for the sake of beating the other team by 10 seconds.

SwedishEdith · 26/04/2023 22:44

Was it Claudia who really wanted to go to Niagara Falls as that's what seemed to have lost them the time?
A few odd things that I wonder if the producers threw in deliberately:

  1. Coinciding with the Grand Prix so all the hotel bills took a massive chunk out of the budgets.
  2. The hotel owner giving the wrong ferry time.
  3. The job woman getting the day wrong for the planned work for the friends.

Yes, I meant Kevin & Claudia, Tricia & Cathie and Ladi and Monique all queueing up for the bus…I didn’t know which route Mobeen & Zainib were taking at that point and they slightly glossed over the fact that they were likely to get there first.

It’s just the way the whole series seems to have gone: there’s a sense of inevitability about them all (or mostly all) converging at the same place and time no matter how many side-trips or how much work they do. Then they just end up running to the checkpoint.

I’m pleased Zainib and Mobeen came first.

1ittlegreen · 26/04/2023 23:09

Claudia just practically ignored the two friends at the station and then aggressively raced from the lift at the check point. She's such a winge bag and gives Stroppy vibes even when she's happy.

Every week I find myself rolling my eyes at her.

Love the other couples and can't decide who I want to win.

They're probably told to.

everywhichway · 26/04/2023 23:32

They let one of the teams sell stuff they'd brought with them in the finale of the last series and that team sneaked through to win because of it. Hope they're not going to let that happen again with Team Kevin.

Leftbutcameback · 26/04/2023 23:37

Is one of the rules that they have to find overnight accommodation rather than sleep rough (for example at the bus station)? They paid huge amounts for some of the hotel rooms. I thought the ladies were smart in going to an out of town motel. No idea what was going on in the place Mobeen found the barking dog!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/04/2023 23:42

In a very similar US series The Amazing Race they tried to do a punishment by stripping a team of money for a leg, they abandoned it because so many countries had no begging laws. I think they would have to reassure the competitors that their safety was paramount as well as this you have to think of the camera crew

Yeah I wondered that too. The Grand Prix thing was obvs a set up, I am not a sport fan and wouldn't know when it was on or even that it was in Montreal, but the producers would have known. I think the hotel owner was a genuine mistake between the summer/winter timetables.

I think the work the two women did in Ottawa just proves what I said upthread about all the jobs being non-genuine. They were wearing t-shirts saying volunteer. The production company must have contacted the festival, sounded them out about "work" and then the two friends decides they'd do the "work". In all these cases the production company is funding the "work", not the business. I get why they do it that way as they couldn't risk contestants going rogue and ending up in a dodgy work situation, ot being arrested by the police or something. So the producers suss out opportunities, put them in a book, make it clear how much will be added to their budget if that's what they choose to do.

KnittingNeedles · 27/04/2023 00:04

Also just been looking at the next leg which is the second to last and is from Quebec city to Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

Google suggests most direct route is south, through Maine in the US. Wonder if that will be allowed. Probably not.

TheMadGardener · 27/04/2023 00:12

Zainib and Mobeen were really lucky when the people they'd been working for paid for their long-distance bus trip. I think they've been very good at managing their money.

The inflated hotel prices for the Grand Prix caused carnage to budgets.

Feeling sorry for Tricia and Cathie now, they don't seem to be enjoying themselves much at the moment.

Claudia and Kevin are just annoying now. Really hoping they will run out of money on the next leg and that the producers don't fiddle it for them to magically get enough money to finish.

I wouldn't mind any of the other teams winning.

TheMadGardener · 27/04/2023 00:13

They're off to Prince Edward Island next, wonder if any of them will do the Anne of Green Gables tourist experience?

malificent7 · 27/04/2023 06:46

Love this show but no idea why the age of the women is being discussed. They have a lovely friendship.

I feel sorry for the fathet/ dd couple...their relationship is so strained. Other pairs are great.

The scenery is breathtaking...i really want to visit Canada now!

Ladi and Monique decided to hang around at a bus station and take a later bus which went overnight specifically so they wouldn’t get to the city early (I’ve forgotten which city they would be arriving at) and have to find overnight accommodation. They don’t HAVE to stay in a 500 dollar hotel.

SwedishEdith · 27/04/2023 07:19

If Claudia and Kevin go out, it won't be as tense to watch. Their villain editing has added to the watchableness of the programme. I do hope a lot of it is editing and that they mostly got on. And Kevin was the who did throw himself into speaking French as far as he could. What was his previous job? He mentioned it "coming back to him now".
